Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Be thorough with your current project and also polish the concepts which are currently using. Deloitte takes easy to medium level Interview. Just stay calm

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I prepared resume keeping in mind the areas of interest that would suit the company’s requirements. The companies that recruit students from all departments usually tend to prefer students having interests in general management/economics related subjects, I knew about this and while applying to non-core companies I specified my areas of interest as these subjects.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was an online written test. The types of questions asked were very similar to the CAT exam. It had the sections related to aptitude, logical reasoning and English. They were simple as per CAT standards and preparation of CAT would help ace the test very easily.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The next round was the case study. The case study was about a medical company undergoing huge losses. We were given the reason for the losses and had to come out with a solution to counter the losses and revive the company. The case study was held in two phases. In the first phase we only had to sit in the group and bring out the points, I qualified through this phase. In the other phase we had to present our points, I failed to qualify this round.

Motivation: I got to know about the company and the job profile from the company's pre-placement talk.

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I took help from my seniors for preparing the resume regarding points to be included and subsequent revisions and formatting. I  mentioned about the activities/cells/societies I have been a part of. Example: Placement cell, Commerce society. I also mentioned about my internship with a stock broker firm.All the students were asked to upload their resume on the company's official website. 120 students got shortlisted for the next round.

Round: Test
Experience: Written test consisted of 4 sections. All sections had multiple choice questions. Each section had 10 questions and the questions were mostly from class 11th and class 12th syllabus. Total time allotted was 45 minutes.1) Verbal ability section
2) Quant (similar to questions asked in CAT)3) Email(compulsory for all candidates)Topic – To examine the preparation of Bank Reconciliation Statement (BRS) of a client and provide feedback to the boss.4) Accounts70 students got selected after the written round.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Each group had 7 people.The topic was to be decided by the group itself. After discussion amongst the group and  with the moderator the topic that was finalised was “India’s performance in Olympics”. They gave us 2 minutes to think about the topic and to pen down our thoughts and 8 minutes for the actual discussion.35 students cleared the group discussion
Tips: Apart from being a good speaker it is important to be a good listener as well. It becomes important when you have to build on what others have said or are asked to conclude.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There was only one round of interview. The interview panel consisted of three people. Following questions were asked in the interview round -
1) Questions related to my resume (some more details about the kind of questions)2) Questions related to my internship (more details like – did they just enquire about the work you did/how was the experience and what you got to learn or did they really test the knowledge you should have / claimed to have gained during the internship)3) Views on collaboration of between Deloitte USA and Deloitte IndiaThere was some discussion about my IPCC scores which I had mentioned in my resume. The people on the panel asked me to pursue the CPS program.The interview lasted for 15 minutes.

Motivation: The official description of the job profile was mailed to all the students by the placement cell.I researched about the company on the internet – their work environment, culture, business, reputation etc. I also talked to my seniors who had got placed in Deloitte last year and have been working there since. They gave me tips for all rounds of Deloitte's placement process which proved to be of great help during the selection process.Before starting the recruitment process, Deloitte gave an introductory session to all the candidates. The aim is to keep all the students equally informed about the company.

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I believe that the resume is the very crucial since it is the single most important basis for getting shortlisted. It also helps the interviewer know you and form an initial opinion about your strengths. Hence it becomes very important to have a strong, well drafted resume, regardless of the company you are applying to. You should mention all your strong points on your resume. Whether it is academics or some project that you might have undertaken or some other extra-curricular activity, all of them should appear on your resume.

When I prepared my resume, apart from the academic details and projects which form a standard part of the resume, I did make it a point to specify all the noteworthy extra-curricular activities I had under taken. I did provide a very brief description for each of the activities.

When you are applying for different companies with different profiles on offer, apart from a few minor changes, the resume remains more or less the same. I did my internship at BHEL. So whenever I used to apply to a core Electrical Engineering Company, I did mention it in my resume. However for other non technical firms, I didn’t mention it. From my personal experience following key points should be kept in mind while preparing the resume

For a core company (electrical engineering companies in my case) make sure that in your resume you focus on your academic details, projects and internships related to the field of that company (as far as possible).
For other firms such as consultancy firms, focus on your extra-curricular activities.
If it is an IT firm you are applying to, then you should focus on your software skills.
Your resume, should be in line with the post that you are applying for and the work that you would be supposed to do after joining.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was a written test in which all the eligible candidates (as per the eligibility mentioned above) were allowed to appear. The test was held a couple of months prior to the placement season and was very similar to CAT with quantitative, logic based and verbal ability based questions. In fact, it was a bit easier than CAT, so the students who had prepared for CAT found it very easy. The cut off was high I guess. About 100 students appeared for the test, and 31 were shortlisted for the second round of the selection process for ERS profile.

Different companies have different types of written tests. Since I always wanted to go for a consultancy firm, I prepared mainly for the general quantitative aptitude test such companies generally follow. Prior preparation for CAT (entrance test for IIMs) definitely helped a lot in preparation for these tests.

Apart from this, I also revised the basic concepts of electrical engineering from standard textbooks for tests of core Electrical Engineering companies. Some of my friends also helped me in revising basic concepts of C++ for tests of IT companies.
Tips: This is the single most important part of the selection process where many students falter because of lack of preparation. Thus they do not even get a chance of getting interviewed. Practising questions from MBA entrance exams do help in the aptitude tests since most of the aptitude tests have a pattern very similar to these entrance exams.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The next round was a group activity where the group was given a case. Everyone in the group was supposed to analyze the case and discuss this amongst themselves to reach to a final conclusion. In the case given to our group, a company had to launch one of its new technologies in three different zones. The details about the 3 zones i.e. market share, competition etc. were given in the case. The group had to discuss the three selling strategies mentioned – phased approach, big bang approach and hybrid approach – reach a final conclusion and then the group had to give a short presentation on the same.

I didn’t prepare for Group Activities in particular because according to me it is more of a spontaneous activity. The group is given a topic, which might be completely unexpected at times. You should be able to communicate well and present your point effectively in a group activity. If someone is good at it, then there is no need for any specific preparation for group activities.
Tips: It is important to have good communication skills. One should be able to make his or her point clearly and make sure that others in the group pay attention to the same. The presentation should be good.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Thirteen students, who got shortlisted from the group activity, made it to the final interview round. It was a behavioural interview and was a pretty simple one. I prepared for the interviews individually, although I did get a lot of help from my friends. There are a few specific questions which are almost always asked in an interview like:
1) Tell us about yourself
2) About you strengths/weaknesses etc.
Although I didn’t frame the actual answers but I did have the points in my mind which I would speak about during the interview.
I also did a bit of research and homework before going for the interview about what the company does and what it expects from the selected hires.
Tips: For the interview, just be confident. A behavioural interview is easy if you have framed answers to some typical questions or have at least thought of some points for the same.

General Tips: As I already had in my mind that I wanted to go for Deloitte, I went through their website thoroughly and other sources of internet as well to gain as much knowledge about the company as I can. As I was already preparing for CAT, the written test didn’t require any other specific preparation. The group activity and the interview were quite general and from my point of view, do not require any specific preparation.

Motivation: Deloitte offered two job profiles in this year’s placement session – Technology Consulting and Enterprise Risk Services. I believe that knowing the company profile in detail is very necessary for success in an interview.

1) I talked to my seniors (who were working with Deloitte) to get more details about the job profile being offered.
2) I attended the Pre-Placement Talk given by the company when it visited our campus. Also I went through their website to find out more about Deloitte.
So, although I was still not quite sure about what would my work exactly involve, but I had a very good idea about the job profiles on offer before going for the selection process.
