Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I started preparing my resume somewhere around August end. I spoke to a few seniors about it and read quite a few resumes, especially of those seniors who either had a profile similar to mine or had secured jobs in fields of my interest, eg. Consulting, finance, etc. I also attended the Resume Writing Workshop conducted by McKinsey and Co. on campus and cleared a few doubts there.
Tips: I would advise you guys to start preparing your resumes well in advance, it is not something to be kept for the last minute. Being the first form of acquaintance between you and a firm, it is a highly important document and the way you highlight your strong points and attributes can go a long way in shortlisting you from amongst the hundreds of resumes that they have to scan. Also, it is important that you be able to speak on any point in your resume in detail, hence you must be sure of what you are writing in it.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The procedure of selection for Opera Solutions was a set of 4 interviews, each having a case study and some HR questions. The initial shortlist had around 22 candidates, after the first 2 interviews around 10 candidates were selected for the final rounds. Finally 3 candidates were made offers.  There were no GDs, only case interviews. The first interview had a case involving a music company which scouts for amateur talent and launches them. They want to enter India and want you to analyse the market and suggest if its feasible or not. The interviewer gave a lot of data related to market share of pop music, bollywood, devotional music, etc and it suggested that the market share of the genre related to the company is very little. However I think what worked best was that I also pointed out certain solutions which could make it feasible, such as merging with another company in a genre where the given company has core competencies in. I think this was the high point of the interview which I atleast would like to believe compensated for a later interview that I did not do well in. Another interview had a case where a pharmaceutical company in the US wants to enter India. A set of constraints and data was given and I was asked to calculate if it should actually setup a manufacturing facility in India or manufacture in the US and transport to India. I did not do well in this one, I wasn’t being able to come up with a figure. Both the interviews had an HR component where I was asked about my strengths and weaknesses, about Mood Indigo and my academic record. I was asked to describe myself. I was also asked to talk about my co-intern’s project in ITC (she was also interviewing with Opera). In a subsequent interview after the shortlist, I was asked to estimate the market for Maruti cars, domestic air travel. They weren't expecting too much detail, the interviewer was more interested in the approach. point.
Tips: I attended most of the initial PPTs. One does get a good understanding of what a firm does and where exactly do you fit into it, you also understand what they are looking for and what is the extent of their operations. I must admit though that I found my interaction with seniors, especially those working in those firms was more informative and fruitful. They can give clarity in certain grey areas that companies might stay non-committal on.ending across links/documents would help us compile a single point resource) . I prepared for case studies from the material I took from seniors, most of which is available on the LAN. For case studies I prepared with a friend and sometimes in groups of 3. I think this method is better than individual preparation because the other person can point out where you are going wrong, you get a different perspective and at the same time you can prepare in a fashion where one interviews the other and vice versa, so you get slightly comfortable with how an actual interview might feel like. It is however important to ensure that the person you are preparing with is competent and complementary to your skill sets, so that you can improve upon aspects where you might be lacking in.

General Tips: Case studies and HR questions. One should be very comfortable with points mentioned in the resume and should be able to talk at length about any . I guess it'd just be shifting a little from being myself if you know what I mean. A lot of seniors would give you a lot of fundae, but at the end one must remember that unless one is comfortable with a certain way of speaking or certain method of solving cases, it wont look genuine. For example, one need not thrash out every single detail of a case before beginning to solve it, sometimes the interviewer might get impatient or might think you are trying to buy time to think by asking unnecessary details. So if you are the kind of a person who can intuitively draw good conclusions at the outset so as to decide which direction to proceed in and hence which questions to ask, you can surely go ahead and do that, you need not also ask questions that you know are not required. Case interviews are very feel-good interviews, even if you make a mistake you will be guided back on track by the interviewer, hence I personally would recommend that you stick more to your general approach to solving cases (if you know it is a good one and works of course) and not try to change too much just because a certain senior did it in a different way.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There were 3 groups formed when the A&M team arrived on campus. A&M conducted 3 rounds of interviews for each candidate and after all the 3 groups had interviewed the candidate, they used to meet and decide on the candidate. Thus the procedure was elaborate but slow. All the interviews were personal interviews.

After waiting outside for almost 7 hours, the interviews were conducted in a very professional manner and the interviewers focus in knowing your past was crystal clear.

Each of the interviewer asked me to go through my resume in a detailed fashion. Each and every bullet point in my resume was questioned and cross questioned. But the interview was not stressful at any point in time. The key reason was that there were no lies in the resume and hence I was very sure about the background of every point (situation, what action I took, why I took that action, what I did, who helped me, how things eventually worked out and what was the result). There were some usual questions as well on strengths, etc. Such questions were few and were randomly thrown at you. Since A&M is mainly a client oriented company who as a part of turnaround would want to “get things done”, I kept all my answers focused towards this theme. Be aware that the interviewers may try to derail you in case you have very well rehearsed answers. So in between questions, there will be some side talk. That can put you off. So being relaxed would help you just laugh/smile that their comments and then continue where you left off. This interview was a walk-in interview for me on day 6, but I had planned on applying here before and hence had some overview of the firm and what it does. That helped me in asking several questions throughout the day. My questions were mainly on switching my focus from IT to operation and finance. At the end of the day, I was told to contact Amit Laud who would be conducting my interview from his base location. This interview was also a personal interview. I googled him and found some details on him. He was an MBA from Wharton, done a stint in Mckinsey, GE and now was the acting CIO for some client company so some questions on IT implementation would be due. I knew that if I get through then I might end up working for him.
Tips: Keep your cool. It is not important to know how to fix laptop or how to fix account statements (if you are CA). But it was more about how you handle such deliberate distracting situations (as if they were your clients) and make the atmosphere friendly.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Understood the background of the company – the company is a global player and sells products everywhere except Middle East • Mainly in Hair Care and Personal Care categories

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: These are the steps that I took:
1)Understood the background of the company – the company is a global player and sells products everywhere except Middle East Mainly in Hair Care and Personal Care categories
My structure was:
Figure out the market size as follows – total population x % using these products x market share x average unit revenue / year o
Figure out cost to serve this market: Interviewer asked me to ignore this and focus on revenue o
Perform competitive analysis o Understand customers o Understand company competency o Understand regulations •
The interviewer liked my structure and we started by understanding the competition and customer before understanding the company and regulations. Finally, I did the market estimation.
Eventually my recommendation was to enter the market as there emerged a low-cost market (laborers) who could use our low-end products in a high-volume game.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: These are the steps that I took:
• Estimate the market size (units)
• Estimate the revenue per unit
• Estimate the growth in market each year to draw a 5 year plan
• Market size
o Start with India Population (households)
o Divide into income segments (to check affordability of owning a car)
o Figure out using poverty line and some other discussions, how many households can actually afford a car
o Then divided into new users and switchers
o Figured out how many new users and % of switchers / 2ndcar buyers
o Worked out the total demand for such cars in market
o Assumed some number for adoption in Year 1
o Evaluated the demand curve – expecting it to be convex with sales rising initially and then slowly flattening as competition comes in and market gets saturated.
o Based on this, predicted some unit sales per year with year 1 > year 2 > year 3 etc.
o Multiplied by constant price (for simplicity) to get revenues for 5 years. The interviewer liked my structure and my thoroughness. In particular he liked my demand curve insight.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Resume making is an art, as everybody puts it. It is true to a certain extent. Drafting resume requires a lot of time. It took me 20 days to come up with the final resume. I started by preparing a rough draft and corrected it with time. I got it reviewed from many people so as to avoid any grammatical errors and also to check if the flow of sentences is good. It was a daunting task but in the end it turned out well since I made it to the shortlist of several companies.
Tips: You should start with listing down all your achievements (even if they're small). Having done that, try to club different points into one category and divide your resume in sections. This will make reader's job easy to create an impression of you. Ensure that there are no grammatical errors. Also, try to articulate sentences in a way which is easily understandable.
Once your resume is ready, get it reviewed from peers and seniors.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: It was a typical market entry case. The interviewer only wanted to check the structure and hence didn't go into details. After asking relevant preliminary questions, I approached this case by understanding two things, one, if there is any opportunity (profitability) within this business and second, if my friend has the required capabilities to enter into this market. The interviewer asked me questions at various parts of the case. I couldn't reach to the recommendation part because of shortage in time.
Tips: Practice sufficient number of market entry cases since these are commonly asked. In the case interview, always try to understand the interviewer's motive behind giving the problem statement. It can be very well understood after 5-10 minutes into the case. Once you know that, it becomes very easy to cast a good impression through solving the case in his desired direction. Also, it is reasonable to ask for interviewer's help whenever needed.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Case details:
This wasn't a simple case as it looks. I tried 2 different approaches but the interviewer wasn't looking convinced. So I tried another approach of dividing the profitability region wise after taking hints from the interviewer. I then went ahead and asked for profitability in different regions where XYZ was operating. It turned out that one country didn't have profitability at par with other countries so I focused on improving profits for that particular country. The problem was somewhere in cost which interviewer helped me find out. Based on it, I gave my recommendations.
Tips: Try to remain calm when you might not pick the right approach at first for case solving. Listen to your interviewer clearly since he might drop hints for laying down initial structure.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This interview was a typical HR interview taken by a Partner with majority of time spent on my introduction. I am fond of reading political news and this became a subject of interest for the interviewer. My opinions were asked regarding Bihar elections, Modi Govt and new policies. This interview went smoothly but lasted quite long before I was made an offer.
Tips: This type of interview is majorly meant for two things, one is to see whether you are a good fit or not and second is to see whether you have a recall value (something that is unique to you). You should analyze yourself damn well before going into the interview room. From your strengths to weaknesses, everything should be supported by some examples or relevant arguments.

General Tips: With doing 30-35 cases, the required skills for solving cases can be developed. Make sure cases are as diverse as possible.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
For a consultant profile, they do look for a consistent academic performance, scholarships, Olympiads etc. So I did make sure to include all my academic achievements in my resume.

Round: Test
Experience: This was the first round and was conducted in October itself, well before the final placement process that begins only in December. The test had 20 questions. All the questions described a particular situation and 4 options describing solutions/implications of the situation were provided. The candidate was supposed to choose one of the 4 alternatives, which according to him, was the best possible answer. From what I recall, there wasn’t much calculation involved. Use of calculator was permitted.
Tips: Attempt all the questions. Be accurate.

Round: Guesstimate Interview
Experience: Around 23 students got shortlisted for the next round of selection process which was held in December.
This round was based on “guesstimate” problems. I was asked to calculate the total annual revenue of McDonalds in India. No other data was given. Use of calculator was not permitted. This interview lasted for about 10-15 minutes.
Some other candidate was asked to estimate the length of roads in Delhi. Another one was asked to calculate the number of road side ads/banners in Delhi.
Tips: Prepare for guesstimate problems and qualitative case analysis.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Indus Insights is a new company. It had a team of only 6 people when it came for recruiting. Not much information was available on the internet. I did attend its pre-placement talk and that acted as the main source of information about the company and the profile offered.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
They were least interested in my resume. They cared more about your analytical skills rather than on your on campus activities.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test which had a few questions from data interpretation and some questions that were quite peculiar to the consulting sector as such. Only 24 students got shortlisted for the next round out of close to 350 applicants.
Tips: The cut off for the written test was very high. So ensuring accuracy and attempting all the questions is important.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The next round was the case study round. The case that I was presented with was to calculate the number of hoardings in a metropolitan city with the help of given data. I failed to qualify beyond this round.
Tips: One should prepare for “Guesstimate” type case interviews (where the interviewee is tried to estimate the final answer based on logical deduction and analysis of the given facts) for this company as they give very high emphasis to the performance in the case study interview round.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Indus Insight is a start-up which uses quantitative analytics to give solution to real life problems encountered in business. The company was founded by an IITB alumnus. It is growing at a fast pace and the best source of information about them was the pre placement talk organised by them.
