A Design Engineer was asked 9mo ago
Q. What is the moment of inertia?
Ans.

Moment of inertia is a measure of an object's resistance to changes in its rotation.

  • Moment of inertia depends on the mass of an object and how that mass is distributed around an axis of rotation.

  • It is calculated using the formula I = Σmiri^2, where mi is the mass of each particle and ri is the distance of each particle from the axis of rotation.

  • Objects with more mass distributed farther from the axis of rotation h...

Q. What are the key considerations when deciding on sheet metal thickness?
Ans.

Sheet metal thickness is decided based on factors like material type, part geometry, function, and cost.

  • Consider material type and its properties (e.g. strength, ductility)

  • Analyze part geometry and required structural integrity

  • Evaluate function of the part and potential stresses it will endure

  • Factor in cost implications of different thickness options

  • Consult industry standards and guidelines for recommended thickne...

Q. What is GD&T and how do you practically use it?
Ans.

GD&T stands for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. It is a system for defining and communicating engineering tolerances.

  • GD&T is used to specify the allowable variations in form, size, and orientation of part features.

  • It helps ensure that parts fit together properly and function as intended.

  • GD&T uses symbols, such as position, concentricity, and flatness, to communicate tolerance requirements.

Q. What is LMC & MMC? Least Material Condition & Max Material Condition
Ans.

LMC & MMC refer to the conditions in which a part has the least or maximum amount of material respectively.

  • LMC is the condition where a part has the least amount of material, ensuring the smallest size of the feature.

  • MMC is the condition where a part has the maximum amount of material, ensuring the largest size of the feature.

  • These conditions are important in engineering design to ensure proper fit and function of...

Q. What is Annotations, PMI & GD& T?
Ans.

Annotations, PMI & GD&T are tools used in engineering to communicate design and manufacturing requirements.

  • Annotations are notes or labels added to a drawing to provide additional information.

  • PMI (Product Manufacturing Information) includes dimensions, tolerances, materials, and other specifications needed for manufacturing.

Q. Major Project Block Diagram
Ans.

A major project block diagram is a visual representation of the components and connections in a complex engineering project.

  • Identify all the major components of the project

  • Show how the components are connected and interact with each other

  • Include any subsystems or modules within the project

  • Use standardized symbols and labels for clarity

A Design Engineer was asked
Q. Starting from modulus of elasticity of soil to liquifaction of soil. It went on like a discussion process
Ans.

Discussion on soil mechanics starting from modulus of elasticity to liquifaction

  • Modulus of elasticity is a measure of soil stiffness

  • Soil strength is important in determining its ability to withstand loads

  • Liquifaction occurs when soil loses strength and behaves like a liquid

  • Factors affecting soil strength include soil type, moisture content, and stress history

  • Liquifaction can lead to soil failure and damage to stru...

Why are women still asked such personal questions in interview?
I recently went for an interview… and honestly, m still trying to process what just happened. Instead of being asked about my skills, experience, or how I could add value to the company… the questions took a totally unexpected turn. The interviewer started asking things like When are you getting married? Are you engaged? And m sure, if I had said I was married, the next question would’ve been How long have you been married? What does my personal life have to do with the job m applying for? This is where I felt the gender discrimination hit hard. These types of questions are so casually thrown at women during interviews but are they ever asked to men? No one asks male candidates if they’re planning a wedding or how old their kids are. So why is it okay to ask women? Can we please stop normalising this kind of behaviour in interviews? Our careers shouldn’t be judged by our relationship status. Period.
