Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The minimum criterion for applying to the company was CGPA more than 6.0 with no backlogs and more than 60% in classes 10th and 12th.
In the written test there were quantitative aptitude questions, logical reasoning questions and few questions from the main topics of mechanical engineering.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Our group consisted of 8 students. First we were given 3 topics from which we had to choose the topic of discussion by mutual consent in 2 minutes. The topics were:
Is jugaad innovation?
3 Idiots and Munnabhai MBBS – which movie had a better message?
Can India achieve 9% GDP growth rate by 2020? Why and how?
We chose the first topic and the group discussion went in a civilized manner, everyone got a chance to speak. Finally 5 students were shortlisted for the interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They asked me to explain my internship and one of my projects and asked me to emphasize on what was my role in them.
It was a mix of both technical and HR interviews where in between they were also putting various HR questions like how do I see myself as an individual and what are my family values. They also inquired about my long term goals and how am I suitable for the company. One question that was typical was why was I not pursuing a MBA or MS.
They wanted people who will stick with the company rather than those who would run away for higher education.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard 2-page resume as per the standard format required by the institute placement cell. The areas of interest that you mention in the resume should change according to the job profile being offered by the company.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round of the selection process for Qualcomm was an online written test. I decided to appear for the hardware engineer (VLSI) profile. The test comprised of three sections. The first two sections – general aptitude and basic programming (C/C++) are same regardless of the profile you choose for the test. These two sections are quite simple. The general aptitude section comprises of objective questions like which figure will follow the given pattern and some other logical questions. The basic programming section consists of simple questions based on C/C++ like what would be the output of the given code, some questions on algorithms and sorting.

The third section is although said to be based on VLSI, but most of the questions asked are from analog electronics, digital electronics and microprocessors. The difficulty level varies from easy to medium difficulty. If you would have revised the topics well, you would be able to answer most of the questions correctly.
Tips: Electrical Engineering students should appear for the VLSI profile as its written test is the easiest of the three profiles being offered and most of the questions in the written test are based on topics that are covered in the Electrical Engineering curriculum.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: After the written test, the next round was an interview round. I worked on the mistakes I had made in interviews earlier and was a lot more confident this time around.
Some of the technical questions asked were related to:
Time domain analysis of waveform
Digital Electronics
Programming language VHDL
Some questions on the basics of VLSI
As I had already studied the subject Embedded Systems and had done a few related projects as well, I was able to answer most of the questions.
For the interview, I did put in a lot of effort in the preparation. Apart from the technical questions one should prepare for the HR type questions as well. I prepared answers for some typical HR type questions. One need not be completely spontaneous while answering questions in the interview. Having some points in your mind about what you want to say and how do you want to say it, always helps.
As I was interested in core companies and software companies, I prepared topics like C++ and Data Structures and practiced questions available on the internet.
Tips: Although I graduated in Electrical Engineering and the company’s work is more into electronics, I was still able to get through because I was able to answer the questions asked and hence prove that I have the necessary skills. Your branch wouldn't be much of a problem during the selection process, if you are able to prove that you have the necessary skill set required by the company.

General Tips: I started preparing for placements in the month of November. I revised topics like Electrical Machines, Microprocessors and Digital Electronics from my own notes. The notes or standard text books are sufficient to prepare for the selection process of any core electrical/Electronics Company.
Also apart from some standard textbooks, one can always search on the internet for questions, either general or specifically those that have been previously asked in that company’s selection process. Questions asked in the interview are more or less the same as those found on the internet. For the written test, revise data structures C/C++, methods of sorting, basics of algorithms, operating systems etc. For the interview you should revise embedded systems, basic electronics and digital electronics.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I used to discuss about the preparation of the resume with my friends, which is how I learnt to prepare a resume. I also received some valuable insights from my seniors for the same. I also made sure that I get thoroughly acquainted with whatever I mention in my resume so that I am able to answer any questions that I’m asked pertaining to the resume.

Round: Test
Experience: I purchased some study materials for the CAT examination (MBA entrance test for IIMs) for the preparation of the written tests. I and my friends would also at times discuss some difficult questions which helped a lot.
The first round in the recruitment process of ZS Associates was an aptitude test. The paper involved sections on quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and English. The paper was similar to the CAT paper.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The second round was the GD. The there were 10 candidates in my GD. The topic under scrutiny was ‘Dirty Picture: Good Entertainment or Bad Entertainment.’ During the GD I was seated 2nd to the last and before me all the candidates had gone for the motion except for one. Before my turn arrived to speak I had decided to speak for the motion, but I realized that all the points for the motion had exhausted and I speak for the motion my points would certainly clash with someone else’s thus there would be no novelty in my points. Hence at the last moment I decided to speak against the motion. This improvisation seemed to have helped me. From my group 7 to 8 marched into the next round.
Tips: Everyone would tell you to keep your aggression under check while participating in a GD which you may tend to forget; I would particularly stress upon this do not let aggression get loose.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There are huge numbers of books available in market which discusses about dealing with interviews. I read some of these books. I studied some of the questions frequently asked in the interviews and while framing answers to these questions I looked back at the years that I spent in the institute and tried to remember some instances which if included in some answers might make them more presentable. In HR interview the interviews asked me to brief them on my resume. They inquired about my internships and projects. Since they interviews were unaware of the biotechnology they were particularly inquisitive about my projects. This was not an elimination round.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The case study was about a shoe company who had both retail and wholesale clients. We had to suggest how the company should spread its representatives across the city. The constraint was that there were a limited number of representatives and maximum sales had to be achieved. The representatives had to be allocated to different areas considering the transportation, communication systems available in that area and the buyers in that area. I did not qualify for further rounds.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I mentioned about all my credentials in my resume in a very compact and precise manner, so that more information could be conveyed in as few words as possible. This I hoped would also impress the evaluators.
I had previously prepared a resume for my internship; I prepared my job resume with the help of this resume. I applied for only 2 companies and while applying in these companies I used the same resume but only ameliorated my areas of interest.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the interview round. The test was divided into three parts: aptitude, verbal ability and mathematics. All the three sections were very simple. The aptitude questions were very similar to those found in CAT preparation books. The only section that some found difficult to negotiate with was the verbal ability section.
Tips: Preparation for CAT or any other MBA entrance exam will help you ace the written test.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The second round was conducted in 4 phases. The first phase was the case study and the second phase was an interview based on the case study. The case study was about a shoe company that wanted to optimize their output and we had to suggest measures that can be implemented to do the same. Since I had no experience in the case study I was eliminated after the second phase itself.
Tips: Prepare for Case Study before appearing for ZS Associate for interview.

They asked me about myself, my strengths and weaknesses, about what motivates me and some questions on morality/ethics etc. They asked me about my family values and about my upbringing as well. Besides the normal HR questions they also asked me which particular area would I be interested in working in, if selected for the company and why? The also asked me what impressed me about the company. There are many other consulting firms but why Frost? I told them I follow football so they asked me about my favorite team, captain and players and also about the latest updates of the football world.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There was a written test for selection. It had 60 questions in 60 minutes. 20 questions were from verbal reasoning and 40 were from quantitative analysis and simple reasoning. The cut off was 47 questions correct out of 60, the test was of medium difficulty level and you just had to be quick with calculations. It would help a lot if you prepare for CAT.
Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 60

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There was a single interview round. An important part of the interview was that we had to walk them through our resume. The questions asked here were mainly HR questions and questions based on small case studies. The general HR questions asked to me were the very common ones including questions about strength and weakness. They were looking for people who knew completely about themselves and their values and ethics. So one should prepare accordingly. They asked me situation based question like how will you handle your boss who is arrogant and some other situations.
Tips: Prepare for CAT for the first round even when you don’t want to appear for it and for GD make sure you are confident and steer the group to conclusion. And finally for the interview just be calm and confident.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume should not exceed two pages according to placement norms so I had to make sure that I write down all my extra-curricular and my academic achievements in a compact manner to ensure that all of them fit in my resume. There were 11 extra-curricular activities that I managed to pen down. I used only one resume for all the companies and only changed my areas of interest to make them compatible with the profile on offer. I also mentioned about my projects and internships.
Tips: A person may have diverse areas of interest but he has to ensure that not all should be mentioned in any company. Only a select few areas of interest, which are simpatico with the profile, have to be mentioned in the resume. You cannot mention structural engineering as an area of interest while applying in a company like Oracle.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round in Flipkart was the written test. It was similar to the CAT exam. There were sections like logical reasoning, verbal reasoning among others. There was another section in which we were given a series of statements and we had to identify the statement that was not in logic. This was a difficult section.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: I prepared for interviews only by asking some of my friends. Some of my friends had already appeared for interviews in certain companies during the recruitment season; it is from them that I learnt the kind of HR questions that are generally asked in interviews.I prepared sample answers to some of these questions.
For technical questions there were no such specific preparations, I ensured that I had all the basic concepts of civil engineering in mind before appearing for the interviews.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
