Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per the norms of our institute’s placement cell. I wanted to get recruited in an IT/ITES related company hence I stressed upon my knowledge of data structures, programming and micro-processors.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test. The questions asked were of digital electronics and programming.
Tips: Try to brush up your knowledge of C++ to fare well in the written test. The book on C++ by Yashwant Kanetkar was very useful in revising all the concepts.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The next round was the interview round. They were interested in testing my knowledge in C++ and networking. I was asked to explain the difference between “IF-ELSE” statement and the SWITCH statement. The interviewer also asked me to give a real life example of circular link list. Some basic questions on classes, inheritance and abstraction were also asked. Then they ventured into asking some questions on networking, but since I had not studied networking, I did not know the answers to those questions. I informed them about my lack knowledge in networking – I wasn't asked any further questions from the topic.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: CISCO is a networking company and specializes in making routers and other network communication hardware and software. The profile is given after selection but overall information about the company can be best obtained from the pre placement talk.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I consulted my seniors for preparation of my resume. I believe that seniors provide the best possible insights in this regards. I had a standard resume for all the companies.

Round: Test
Experience: I had prepared for the CAT examination which helped me in these written tests. The first round was the written test. The criterion for the written test was to have a CGPA more than 6.0. There was an aptitude test and a technical test. The technical test consisted of programming questions based on C++ and data structures. From data structures they asked a lot questions based on tree traversals and from C++. A large number of questions from pointers and arrays were also asked.
The aptitude test was slightly easier than the CAT examination standards. Majority of the questions were related to data interpretation and some were of based on logical reasoning. The total duration of the both the tests combined was 90 minutes.

Around 50 people appeared for the first round and nearly 13 got shortlisted for the next round.
Tips: For the written tests, particularly the aptitude section, if would really help if you have prepared for the CAT examination. There is a book written by an author named R.S. Agarwal which would prove to be beneficial from the point of view of these written tests.
Duration: 90 minutes

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I did not prepare much for the GD’s. However I did keep myself abreast with certain latest happenings. There were no group activities conducted in the recruitment process of Century Link.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: For HR interviews I prepared answers to some frequently asked HR questions. I found these questions on the internet. Generally the questions asked in the interviews are related to the profile on offer; for instance in A2Z interview I was asked a lot of questions from power systems since it was a core company and in Century Links I was asked questions from C++ and data structures since they had come to recruit for a software engineering profile.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: In this interview I was questioned on my C++ and data structure knowledge. They asked me questions on pointers and further asked me to explain the concept of dangling pointers. They did not want me to write down the complete code with proper syntax's of the problems asked to me. They only asked me to write the algorithms of the various problems.
They also asked me some puzzles. Unfortunately, I was not able to solve any of them. During the course of the interview they asked me to specify the reason for my keen interest in joining an IT company.
At the end of first interview some candidates were shortlisted and called for the second round of interview.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The second interview was conducted by a senior company official. He enquired about my project and again, like in the first interview, asked me to state the reason for my interest in joining an IT company. This interview round was an elimination round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interview was an HR interview. Candidates who reached till this interview were all selected; basically this interview was like a formality to check the candidate’s fit with the company.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I had never heard of the company before the recruitment season. I attended the PPT organised by the company, I found the company to be a well reputed/established company and thus applied to it. The profile was open for Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Electronics engineering students.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I kept changing the “areas of interest” depending on the company and the profile offered.

Round: Test
Experience: First round was based on aptitude and coding based questions. The questions on programming were related to linked lists, data structures, pointers and sorting. The questions on aptitude were related to Permutation and Combination among others. 50-60 students had applied out of which 15 were selected for technical interview.

Round: Interview
Experience: In the technical interview my area of interest was asked. I went with data structure. Then they asked all sorts of questions in data structure ranging across linked list, trees, sorting, searching, doubly linked lists. They asked me a puzzle based on buoyancy. If a brick is thrown out of the boat in the water then what happens to the level of water. Technical questions on practical applications of linked lists, networking etc were asked. I was also asked about the technicalities of common apps that are used by the people.
Tips: Prepare for data structures in depth to perform well in the interviews.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most information regarding the company was obtained by attending the pre placement talk. The company did not lay a lot of emphasis on knowledge about the company but instead on the technical knowledge of the candidate.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Since I wanted to get into a software company I focused more on C++ and data structures. For the aptitude section I studied some data interpretation problems and the likes
Tips: If you are interested in joining a software company you must good knowledge of C++ and data structures. Further if you are interested in joining some firm as a software developer you must have good knowledge about OS and Application Development.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Before applying to Centaurus I wasn't completely decided about the profile I would like to apply for. But after the company arrived in the campus, I learnt about their trading profile that they were recruiting candidates for. This profile seemed very interesting to me and I decided to apply for it.
The first interview was held in Roorkee. In this interview I told him about my interest in trading and about my achievements in the trading sector. I told him how proficient I was in trading which was quite apparent through my achievements in a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. The interviewer was very impressed and I qualified for the next interview round. The interviewer asked me questions on my family background and my inquired about my hobbies. I mentioned my hobby as strategic gaming and explained how these games have improved my trading skills.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The second interview was held in Mumbai. The interviewer literally yelled at me which shook me a bit. After this moment I could not fully concentrate on the interview and everything started falling apart.
In this round again the interviewer asked me about my family background. He also asked me a very interesting question, the question was that if I were to be handed over a lot of money, then how would I spend it. I used this opportunity to talk about my interest in trading. I told him that with such huge sum of money I would invest in trading.
Tips: Just believe in yourself. Concentrate on your strengths and minimize your weaknesses in the discussions. If anyone wants to join a trading company there is a website ‘tradetowin.com’. The site consists of many articles based on psychology of trading.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute’s placement cell norms and changed the “areas of interest” depending upon the company and the profile offered.

Round: Test
Experience: First round was a kind of rapid fire test where 25 quantitative ability questions were to be answered in 20 minutes. The cut-off was around 23 questions. The questions were easy based on simple mathematical operations such as the addition subtraction, multiplication and division. The high cut-off meant that the test required speed as well as accuracy.
Duration: 20 minutes
Total Questions: 25

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Next was the interview where I was asked why I, being an engineer had opted for a financial firm. Then he asked me the significance of each of the 4 digit blocks in 16 numbers of an ATM card. Some simple questions were also asked to check my calculation skills like finding the value of 8/5, 7/3 etc.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most information regarding the company was obtained by attending the pre-placement talk. I came to know that it was a company which dealt with trading.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had mentioned my extra-curricular activities in my resume in a detailed and organised manner (all listed in a chronological order). Most of these were techno-managerial activities (organizational responsibilities in my tech fest). I had participated in an event called Robocon which added a new dimension to me resume. I had done a project and a couple of internships during my four years of study – I mentioned the details of these in my resume. Although the resume that we submitted was in a standard format as per the norms of our placement cell, I referred to a website of Princeton University to prepare my resume. It’s a very good website and hugely referred by students for preparing their resume. I also got some valuable insights from my seniors for building my resume. I laid stress on my achievements related to the technical field, because I wanted to land a job in my core field of study.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test. The paper consisted of questions from general aptitude, technical ability and verbal ability. The paper was slightly lengthy and required a bit more stress on speed while maintaining the accuracy. The verbal ability part was easy; if a person had prepared for CAT, then he would not have found the paper difficult. The difficulty level of general aptitude questions was at par with the verbal ability questions. The technical questions were however slightly more difficult as compared to the other two. To answer these questions required a fair amount of knowledge on topics like ‘General Mechanics’, ‘Fluid Mechanics’, ‘Machining’ and ‘Solid Mechanics’. Some questions from ‘Thermodynamics’ were also asked. The total duration of the test was 90 minutes and the number of questions was 60. The test only had objective questions.
Duration: 90 minutes
Total Questions: 60

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The next round was the personal interview round. I had my interview the very next morning. The very first question the interviewers asked was related to me as person – my schooling, my family background and my four years of college life. The interviewer then did a review of my resume and picked some points and then questioned me on that. He also asked me about my areas of interest. I told them that I had cultivated a lot of interest in ‘Machine Design’. I showed them some pictures of the Robocon event that I had participated in, which quite impressed them. I was then asked to design the chair that I was sitting on considering all the different design aspects. I designed the chair by doing the load analysis and by carrying out some other important tests. However one important aspect that I did not account for was the safety of the design, which I realized after the interview. Another mistake that I think I committed was that I did not use the technical terms related to designing. I felt they were looking out for those important technical terms. I was then asked that if I had a choice of using wood, steel and plastic which of those materials would I use to make the chair. I basically had to give the preference order. I replied stating that plastic would be my first choice since it is cheap and most people can afford it, then steel because the fabrication process was less tedious in case of steel and placed wood last. They then cross questioned me that if I considered wood to be least preferred material for designing the chair, then why furniture is being manufactured from wood. I could not give them a suitable answer.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I usually changed my “Areas of Interest” as per the company profile. For Caterpillar, I laid emphasis on all of my technical activities.

Round: Test
Experience: The written test was purely technical covering almost all the major topics of Mechanical Engineering course curriculum. The questions related to Fluid Mechanics were particularly difficult. The questions were all objective and the test was for a duration of 90 minutes.
Tips: For Caterpillar, one must have in-depth knowledge of almost all major topics of mechanical.
Duration: 90 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The questions were totally technical. There were no HR questions even in the beginning. They asked me about my topic of interest and I replied as Solid Mechanics. They asked questions related to designing of stuff. For example one of the question that was asked from me was – How will you design a swimming diving board? It was a question on cantilever beam. The whole interview continued on this particular question. They kept on counter questioning and gave me additional situations as I proceeded and I had to incorporate them in my design process. They asked me to develop a static design and thereafter asked me to develop a dynamic design. Then they asked me for another subject of interest which I stated as vibration design. Then they asked me to do vibration analysis of the swimming board that I had designed earlier in the interview. They also asked me my favorite topic from class 10th and I replied as Mathematics. They asked me a simple question on it which I answered correctly.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most of the information regarding the company was obtained by attending the Pre-Placement Talk. The company is one of the pioneers in its field and hence it was sort of a dream company for students and we had researched about it by visiting its website and the Wikipedia Page.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Following was the pattern for the written test.

Round 1:
12 Questions from C which were easy but you needed to answer minimum 10 questions correct to qualify.

Round 2:
3 programming questions, one on recursion, one question to sort string in less than 0 (nlogn) (go for redix sort, char 1 byte, O(bn), b=8), third was about a pair of elements with given difference.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: After the two rounds for written test there was an interview round. To ace the interview round you should study as many puzzles as you can as well as be ready to answer lots of questions about the OOPS concept. They also ask a lot of questions on C and C++. Also have proper knowledge about what the company does and also have inside knowledge about Iphone, Ipad and Android.
Besides this there were the normal HR questions which revolved around me, my strength and weakness, my attitude towards life as well as where do I see myself after n No. Of years.
Tips: It is my advise that you do proper research about the company before appearing for the interview.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had my resume which I used for the internship purpose, I used the same resume. While applying in different companies I used the same resume but only ameliorated my areas to make them compatible with the requirements of the profile.

Round: Test
Experience: I had prepared for CAT earlier which helped a lot. All the tests were easier than CAT examination. In the written test for Capital One, we were allowed to use the calculators. The questions asked were pretty simple and were based on graph interpretation. To solve those questions required speed and precision. Nearly 400 people appeared for the written test out of which 80 got selected for the case study round.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The first phase was a preliminary case study round. The topic of the case study was based on comparison between diesel cars and petrol cars, which is more preferable to be purchased. Then we had to perform a break even analysis regarding which car is a better purchase in a particular year. Then they added a clause that if the car was to be purchased with a loan at a given rate of interest, then which is more preferable. They also asked me to guess the constraints that should be put on mileage, servicing and maintenance. The data given was the Distance traveled per year, the cost of servicing, the rate of interest on the loan taken and the rate of depreciation.
25 candidates got selected for the next phase of interviews.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: In the second phase of case study, the case study was held in front of a panel. There were two sets of panels. My case study was about the credit card users, I was told about two types of user the transactors and the revolvers and I had to find out which type of user is preferable among the two considering the given constraints. The constraints given were the amount of money they were allowed to withdraw, the time allocated to pay the dues after each month and so on. We had to do a break even analysis of the case. Due to the lack of time I was asked to do the quantitative analysis only.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: For the next case study the topic was on the spectrum allocation. I was told about the call rates as a function of time and I was asked to comment whether the implementation of the plan would be successful or not. The person taking supervising my case study helped me by dropping hints. He asked to state the number of minutes an ideal user should use so that the plan would be successful. I came up with a figure. He immediately asked me the procedure I would undertake to implement this plan without giving me any data whatsoever, I was terribly confused and could not reply. He then told me that I could ask for any data that I think would prove to be fruitful in getting to the answer. I asked him to give me the distribution of the customers based on the call rates of each customer. This data proved to be helpful and I managed to arrive at the answer.
Tips: In the case study just do your mathematics properly, do not commit mistakes in doing that.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: We had an H.R. interview in which only 2 questions were asked. Both the questions were situation based
questions.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. Also my seniors advised me that for an analyst profile they would definitely look for consistent academic performance as well as academic achievements (at school/Olympiad level). So I had taken care to include the same in my resume (since the resume in our case is a standard one and does not change from a company to company basis).

Round: Test
Experience: Since I was aware of the profile they were recruiting for, I had anticipated the test. There was also guidance from my seniors as well as peers in other colleges. The written test had 30 questions and the total duration of the test was 35 minutes. The questions focused on data interpretation. Data about a company’s revenue, profit and sales in the form of graphs and pie charts was given and students were asked to analyse the same. Questions were simple and the use of calculators was allowed. The cut-off was around 23 questions (based on discussions/feedback from various students). People who have prepared for CAT would have a good idea about the kind of questions and are also aware of the relative difficulty level of various questions.
Tips: In these tests the focus should be on accuracy. Since a lot of people prepare for CAT there is high probability that a lot of candidates would be able to attempt all the questions in the written test. The focus then shifts to accuracy.
Duration: 35 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The first round was a case study round held in the month September (three months prior to the actual placement process). This interview lasted for approximately 15 minutes. It dealt with the break even analysis of a credit card company’s marketing and promotion campaign. The company had the option of sending letters of promotion to prospective clients via simple postal mail or through courier. The data provided was – cost of each promotion strategy, the probability of reaching the correct client and the conversion rate of a prospective customer into a customer for the particular case. There was a constraint on the marketing budget and hence one needed an optimized solution to maximize the profits.
The first part involved giving pros and cons for both the strategies and thereafter giving a data based analysis for the given promotion strategies to come up with one which was more profitable.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The second round of the interview was held at the time of the main placement season – this time a one on one case study interview. This case focused on the break even analysis of a telecom company. The data given was the cost to company for a call (on a per minute basis), fixed price paid by the customer for the first 10 minutes and the price paid per minute of usage thereafter.
After analysis, I found that there were two break even points. Up to the first point the company was making a profit. Then there was an intermediate call duration period when the company made losses and beyond the second break even point, the call was again profitable.
As the head of the telecom company I had to decide whether to take the plan or not based on the probability distribution of the call duration and also analyse the probabilities of profit/loss.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I learnt about the company and the profile from the seniors working at the company and the pre-placement talk. The placement talk was useful in getting to know about the job responsibilities and the expectations from the candidate.
