Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The written round was based entirely upon Algorithms and Data Structures.
Complexity of various operations were asked and a few aptitude questions were present.
Nothing much was asked about Databases etc.

Round: Interview
Experience: The interview was 3 rounds of pure technical stuff. The questions were tough. Typically 2 or more questions were asked in each interview (atleast one of which would be a coding question which you had to solve and code within the time limit of 45 minutes for both questions).
I was initially asked about the Euler Tour and how I would code up a solution. I gave the standard graph theory solution for the same. The interview realized that I knew about the problem and switched the problem statement and gave me a problem that I had not encountered before. The idea was to give you an unseen problem and see how you cracked it.

The problem was:- Given a series of overlapping intervals, generate all the event points and the set of intervals that were currently overlapping the event point. eg. for the intervals (1 3) (2 6) (2 4) (3 7)(8 9) the event points would be (1 - (1 3)) (2 - (1 3) (2 6)(2 4))(3 - (1 3)(2 6)(2 4)(3 7))(4 - (2 6)(2 4)(3 7))(6 - (2 6)(3 7))(7 - (3 7))(8 - (8 9))(9 - (8 9)). After solving this problem, I was asked about some general questions about designing distributed databases for a high volume application and distributed data centers and how to adjust for geographically distributed queries.

Round: Interview
Experience: In the 2nd technical interview round, the first question was an analytical one about proving or disproving a statement involving a grid of size 2^n by 2^n. The question asked whether it was possible to tile the grid using an L shaped tile of size 2x2 leaving just one square empty. The second question was to code up the delete node operation on a BST.

Round: Interview
Experience: This one was relatively easier where the question involved adding 2 numbers of equal number of base 10 digits stored as a singly linked list of digits.
Allowed operations were only forward traversal of the linked list with O(1) extra space and a time better than 2 traversals of the linked list.

General Tips: Study hard (especially Algorithms, Graph Theory and Data Structures) for
the interviews. They don't care about HR stuff and they look for high CG candidates.
Skill Tips: Primary preparation was from 2 sources:
1) In the early stages (about 2 months before Day 0 of placements) - I read through Cormen et al
(Algorithms - MIT Press) and solved problems from Codechef and other sources. I also read through the TopCoder tutorials on Dynamic Programming, Graph Algorithms and Tree Based problems.
2) In the later stages (15 days before Day 0) - I read through the book "Algorithms for Interviews". It has a number of tough problems on DP, Graph theory and specialized algorithms for specific problems (eg. O(n) solutions for certain cases). Also, I went through the past year interview questions of all the CS companies available - MS, Adobe, Amazon etc. A few days before Day 0, I also went through my previous year notes on Operating Systems, Databases etc.
3) One thing that I neglected was implementing the code for basic data structures (Tree insert, delete etc.) but I should have done that as part of the preparation as I was caught off guard by one question about my basics. I would recommend reading C++ Data Structures and Algorithms by Lippman. (Some others also recommend C by Kerninghan and Ritchie as a way to brush up your language skills).

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Only technical will be asked and that also only from structural engineering.
Tips: Get hold of IS 456 and IS 800. This is very important to clear the written exam.

Round: Interview
Experience: Around 60 minute long interview
Tips: In technical interview only subjective structural engineering questions will be asked. Questions might seem lengthy but they won't be. They will check your fundamentals. So if you are not able to do it, at least explain the procedure.

Round: Interview
Experience: Around 30 minute long interview
Tips: In the HR they will try to judge whether you really want to be an structural engineer. If you prove that then your HR is fine.

General Tips: This was the only company I prepared for. I was also preparing little bit for GATE exam. So that helped me a little. If you really wanna get placed in this Company, you better be prepared in the structural engineering only. They will ask only the technical questions. No matter what is your CGPA, you have to perform in their written test and interview (both technical and HR). They take one of the most rigorous interviews. Main work of the company is in steel structure design. So take notice of that.
Skills: Structural Engineering
College Name: IIT Roorkee
Motivation: From the very begining I wanted to be a structural engineer. Although I wasn't a very good student and didn't had a great CGPA. When I saw the website and later the ppt of the company, I had this feeling that this is the company for me. So for the first time, I studied for the placement.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There was a half an hour written test on technical subject. Then there was a test on aptitude questions for half an hour, after which we had an optional test for computer literacy.
Tips: The basics have to be clear as they only ask conceptual questions. For aptitude, R.S. Agarwal's book is preferable.

Round: Interview
Experience: I had 4 interviews of 25 minutes each.I had 4 interviews of 25 minutes each.

Round: Interview
Experience: 2nd interview was for programming skills. I was asked to code in OOP concept and also had to write a code for prime numbers

Round: Interview
Experience: I was asked about my favourite sport. Since I had mentioned lawn tennis, I was asked questions in the same.

Round: Interview
Experience: In the last round, they asked me about GE and questions like why do you want to join, and will you be comfortable with this kind of job etc. I was also asked if i was ready to face the challenges company posed and also if i would not cower down due to the tough environment.

General Tips: Just be yourself and honest about what you want from life, job, and yourself. Look into yourself and find out what interests you the most. if you select that company where your interests matches then you may not be the best in that field but you will definitely get selected
Skill Tips: The company was looking basically at candidates with very high conceptual knowledge and a quest to learn. The company wanted to make sure that the candidate would survive in the tough ompetitive environment of GE

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Test was subjective and questions were asked from basic analog, digital design, VHDL and VLSI circuits.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Had 3 technical interviews each around 25 minutes. They asked me about my summer internship and
questions from microcontroller architecture and its interfacing. Then they asked me the questions
from those problems which I didn't attempt in the written test.
Tips: For electrical students, it might be a bit challenging. I took an elective on Microcontroller in 7th sem which
helped me a lot during the interview. You might want to brush up your concepts of 8085, digital, OPAMPs
and analog

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My family background and my future goals were asked. They asked me about
my internship project and wanted to know what I learnt during the internship. Then I asked a few questions
from them about the company work culture and growth opportunities

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: It was CG based.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The questions generally asked are of general type and hence check how much do you know about different aspects related to the topic. For example: How does a mobile work can check your knowledge about various modulation techniques, protocols, disadvantages, comparison with CDMA etc. And you are expected to tell them all these things.
Tips: As ISRO had a single round of technical interview for its selection process I tried to plan my answers for that. For example the most obvious question could have been regarding my area of interest. Think it carefully and prepare for the interview questions in that field.

General Tips: The interview process was completely technical as I have mentioned earlier. Being an IDD student they asked me what new have i learnt in this extra year. There were some questions from the courses that I have studied-one was from antenna and one from wireless networks. There were questions related to my project on GPR. Now, telling things which could impress the panel surely helps in any interview.
