Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I prepared resume keeping in mind the areas of interest that would suit the company’s requirements. The companies that recruit students from all departments usually tend to prefer students having interests in general management/economics related subjects. I knew about this and while applying to non-core companies I specified my areas of interest as these subjects.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round in Flipkart was the written test. In the test there were about 120 questions asked. The paper was similar to the CAT paper. The paper comprised of reading comprehension, verbal ability, maths, quantitative aptitude and data interpretation. The questions were pretty simple, however the time constraint proved to be a problem. I qualified for the next round.
Total Questions: 120

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This interview was the HR interview. The company had arrived in the campus on the 2nd or the 3rd day of the recruitment season hence I was not at all prepared for the interview. Whatever answers that I gave during the interviews were all spontaneous. The interviewer soon realized that I had come unprepared for the interview and ended the interview very soon. I did not get selected but I got a feel of the kind of questions asked in these interviews.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Flipkart came for placements for the very first time. I had applied for the Management Trainee profile. They were looking for people who had dynamic personality, good communication skills and a good overall profile. I had attended the PPT (pre-placement talk) held by the company and that is where I gained knowledge about the company’s profile.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: While applying to core companies I focused more on my projects and internships and on the other hand while applying to non-core companies I went through the company’s annual report and tried to analyse the kind of work the company was involved in and also the vision the company held and tried to arrive at a common ground keeping in mind the vision of the company and my interest while framing the resume.

Round: Test
Experience: Since I did not prepare for CAT it was slightly difficult for me to clear the written tests. I borrowed some books from my friends and practiced them thoroughly well. The tests are pretty simple which I realized later after giving these tests. The tests require basic mathematics knowledge and some speed. A person having prepared for CAT should have no problems in dealing with these tests.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interviewer was a graduate from IIT Delhi in civil engineering. He asked me some basic questions and told me exactly how Flipkart operates. He asked me to talk about myself. Then he inquired about my 3rd year internship, which I had done in IIT Delhi in the civil engineering department. I told him about the kind of work I did in my internship.
Next he asked me to state the reason for the switch from civil arena to software arena in spite of having done a number of projects and internships in civil sector. Further he asked me a few basic questions related to civil engineering like ‘Which is the largest column built in India till date’.
Lastly he asked me that if offered posting in Bangalore or further south which would I prefer. To this I replied saying that I would prefer a posting somewhere in north India. I believe that this is the primary reason why I squandered my chances of getting recruited in the company.
The company eventually recruited 7 candidates.
Tips: If you are a civil engineer you should have good knowledge about structural engineering because generally each and every company would ask technical questions to a civil engineer from this topic.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Flipkart came for placements for the very first time. I had applied for the Management Trainee profile. They were looking for people who had dynamic profile and those who had good communications skills.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
I usually changed my resume’s “Areas of Interest” as per the company profile. For EIL I laid emphasis on all of my technical activities

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There was directly an interview round. The candidates were shortlisted based on CGPA (7.0 and above)
The interview was purely technical. They were not interested in HR questions. I was asked only 4 questions. Some of the questions that they asked me were:
What are the properties required for Gear Designing? They wanted no explanation but only the words or the exact properties.
They asked me questions on Ackerman Steering.
I had a project on Efficycle so he asked me a question on cycles – He asked me why are the spokes of cycle pre tensed?
The interview was not too stressful and continued for around 40 minutes.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Engineer India Limited is a public Sector company and hence its site is more than sufficient to know about its activities.

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
As Engineers India Ltd puts more focus on core technical skills, so I mentioned Structural Analysis and Design as my area of interest in the resume.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Engineers India Ltd directly had an interview round after shortlisting the students based on their resume/CGPA. A student should have had a CGPA of more than six across all the semesters to get shortlisted.
The interview was a technical plus HR interview. I was asked 2-3 questions from every field of Civil Engineering viz. Structures, Transportation, Soil and Hydraulics. Some of the questions asked were questions related to Bending Moment Diagram (Structures).

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. eBay interviewers were not much concerned about the resume but they would surely browse through it and ask you questions from it. So it’s better to write genuine stuff rather than bluffing about things you have not actually done.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test. The test consisted of two sections one dedicated to the programming questions and the other to the logical reasoning questions. The paper was tough or so to say very unique. The programming questions were based on stacks and queues. One question was asked on circular queue. In logical section one of the questions that I remember was to derive numbers from 1 to 10 using only 4 four’s with the help of any of the mathematical operations. Other logical questions were more or less similar to this. There was also a general aptitude section which was comparatively simpler.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This round was an H.R. interview round. He reviewed my resume and asked me some questions based on that. It was sort of a stress round as the interviewer was pushing me for answers.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: In this they tested my programming and data structure knowledge. In data structure I was asked that, if there was a duplicate entry in a given link list then how would I find it. He also asked about the virtual functions and exception handling. He also inquired about the project that I had worked upon – I walked of a coding project in which I had used some unconventional algorithms.
Tips: Good knowledge of data structure and database management may prove helpful. They are more concerned about your knowledge. If you are good at web coding then it is always an added advantage.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. For any software company in general, do mention all software projects you have done and languages/software packages you know.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round of the selection process was a written test which comprised of two sections. The first section had aptitude based/puzzle based problems. Questions were tricky and didn’t require any calculation. Some of the questions were
(1) Form all numbers from 1 to 10 using four 4’s and the basic arithmetic operations +,–  ,* and /(2) Pick the odd one out from a given series.(3) Complete the series (a series with the starting alphabet of days in a week was given).(4) How many knights can you place on a standard chess board so that no piece can attack any other piece?Subjective answers had to be given with proper explanation for the same. The second section was based on C/C++ programming. There were three questions. The first one required the candidate to write the output of a given program. The next question was based on simple if-else statements while the last question was based on circular queues. All questions in this section were easy if the candidate has decent enough programming skills.

Total time for both the sections was 1 hour. There was no marking scheme and short listing was done based on the overall response of the candidate. Some particular questions or parts of questions, however, were considered more important by the company, and candidates answering those questions and a few others correctly, were shortlisted for the next round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The first round was a 1 to 1 interview wherein the interviewer tried to put me under pressure by pointing out mistakes in my answers to written test and making me solve the questions which I had not attempted in the written test. He also asked me about my family background, why I think I should be shortlisted for the next round etc.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The next interview was a purely technical interview. The interviewer asked me about the programming languages I had worked on. No question was asked from languages other than those I mentioned. There were some standard questions about data structures and their implementation using C++. As I had worked on a couple of websites, the interviewer asked me questions related to HTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL/JavaScript. I was also asked to show one of the websites I had designed on the internet and the interviewer asked me a few questions about it. Except for a few, questions were very basic and easy for someone with good programming skills.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The final interview mostly had HR questions. The interviewer talked at length about my interest in sports, my favourite sportsman and why. He also questioned me regarding the websites I had worked on, other extracurricular activities and what did I learn from them, what do I know about eBay and how would I be able to contribute to it if I am selected.
Tips: Revise programming concepts. Do not panic even if the interviewer tries to put you under pressure.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: eBay is a renowned company. I didn't have much idea about the job profile on offer. However I did know that it was in the field of website and software development. I also found a lot of information about the company through the company’s Wikipedia page.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: They had asked for the resume at the time of interviews. So resume was surely looked into while selecting the right candidate.

Round: Test
Experience: They had a written test which was based on quantitative questions. The test wasn't tough and had an average level of difficulty. There was negative marking for wrong answers.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The topic for the GD was FDI in Multi Retail market. They were looking for people who were confident, had good communication skills as well as can support their facts with actual and valid theoretical knowledge.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: After the group discussion there was the personal interview. There was a ‘why’ and a ‘how’ with every question asked by them .Questions were there on my internship. What did I like about my experience there? Did I enjoy working there? Besides this a few questions based on core finance topics were also asked.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I varied my areas of interest (mentioned in the resume) apart from my course depending upon the companies.

Round: Test
Experience: Initially there was written test which consisted of two sections each of 25 questions. In first section there were aptitude questions and in second section there were programming based questions which mainly dealt with C++ and microprocessor. They had written the codes and we were asked to find the output. The questions were mainly from pointers and classes. No questions were asked from Data Structures.
Total Questions: 50

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They went through my resume, perhaps they wanted to know whether my actual interest lies in IT industry or not. Initially they mainly concentrated on my personal stuffs, hobbies as they wanted to check my dedication. They asked me why I wanted to join an IT company. I told them that right from my childhood I had an interest in computers and I think I was able to convince them. Then they asked me to write a program related to linked list which consisted of the operations like ‘inserting a node’, ‘deleting a node’ and other functions of the linked lists. I did not write the whole program, just wrote a linked list program and showed the important functions they asked and verbally told them some of the functions.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: In the second round of interview there were technical questions. An example of the question asked was ‘if I wanted to maintain a data structure in which I had to figure out in a team of 11 such players who has scored maximum runs among ’x’ no. of players so which sort of data structure could be used to create such a program.’ I answered them that there is a heap or tree having the same functionality. There are two types of heap sort minimum and maximum. In the minimum heap sort the minimum node is placed at the top of the tree and vice versa in case of maximum. So basically the question was based on heap sort. They asked me questions related to coding and basic computer operations like how does the computer start and what is the inside operation going on at the time of starting – I was asked to explain all of these. Then there was a long discussion on operating systems and then they asked me how to control a resistor using C++ – this I could not answer. They also asked me a puzzle – if a rope takes 1 hour to burn completely then how would I find that 20 minutes have elapsed if I have two similar ropes. So, in all it was a very good experience for me.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I came to know about the company through the placement cell. The presentation given by the company during the pre-placement talk was the first source of information for me.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume was as per the norms of the placement cell of our institute.
I used only one resume for different companies, however I altered my “areas of interest” to make them compatible with the profile on offer. For instance while applying for coding profiles I mentioned my areas of interests as C++ and data structures, whereas in core companies I mentioned my areas of interests as machining and power systems.

Round: Test
Experience: For the programming questions I referred a book named ‘Test your C++’ by Yashwant Kanetkar. The book consists of some short questions which help in quick revision. I also stumbled across some websites that gives a proper list of most frequently asked questions I the written test. I found these questions using generic internet search.
The first round was the written test of 90 minute duration. The questions asked in the paper were logical reasoning and aptitude based. The questions were pretty much similar to those asked in the CAT examination; however I found these questions were much simpler to those.
Duration: 90 minutes

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The next round was the interview round. They asked me to walk them through my resume. Further they started asking me questions on networking. I had not studied networking in particular; however while preparing for the programming related questions I referred to a book written by author ‘Sumita Arora’, this book consists of a topic on networking. I had read that chapter. The chapter included different models of networking. I spoke about these in detail. The interviewer also gave me a puzzle - if I were given 2 ropes each of which when burnt from one end burnt out completely in 60 minutes, then how do you determine that 45 minutes have passed. I did not qualify for the next round.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: CISCO is a networking company and specializes in making of routers and network management hardware and software. The profile is given after selection but overall information about the company can be best obtained from the pre placement talk.
