Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There was a written test for selection. It had 60 questions in 60 minutes. 20 questions were from verbal reasoning and 40 were from quantitative analysis and simple reasoning. The cut off was 47 questions correct out of 60, the test was of medium difficulty level and you just had to be quick with calculations. It would help a lot if you prepare for CAT.
Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 60

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There was a single interview round. An important part of the interview was that we had to walk them through our resume. The questions asked here were mainly HR questions and questions based on small case studies. The general HR questions asked to me were the very common ones including questions about strength and weakness. They were looking for people who knew completely about themselves and their values and ethics. So one should prepare accordingly. They asked me situation based question like how will you handle your boss who is arrogant and some other situations.
Tips: Prepare for CAT for the first round even when you don’t want to appear for it and for GD make sure you are confident and steer the group to conclusion. And finally for the interview just be calm and confident.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test. There were 4-5 sections in the test with each section containing 10-15 questions. There were sections on verbal reasoning, data interpretation and simple geometry. The test was not an elimination test and every candidate who appeared for the test was called for the GD.
Tips: For the written tests, particularly the aptitude section, if you have prepared for the CAT examination you would not find it difficult to solve them. There is a book written by an author named R.S. Aggarwal which would prove to be beneficial from these written tests point of view.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume should not exceed two pages according to placement norms so I had to make sure that I write down all my extra-curricular and my academic achievements in a compact manner to ensure that all of them fit in my resume. There were 11 extra-curricular activities that I managed to pen down. I used only one resume for all the companies and only changed my areas of interest to make them compatible with the profile on offer. I also mentioned about my projects and internships.
Tips: A person may have diverse areas of interest but he has to ensure that not all should be mentioned in any company. Only a select few areas of interest, which are simpatico with the profile, have to be mentioned in the resume. You cannot mention structural engineering as an area of interest while applying in a company like Oracle.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round in Flipkart was the written test. It was similar to the CAT exam. There were sections like logical reasoning, verbal reasoning among others. There was another section in which we were given a series of statements and we had to identify the statement that was not in logic. This was a difficult section.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: I prepared for interviews only by asking some of my friends. Some of my friends had already appeared for interviews in certain companies during the recruitment season; it is from them that I learnt the kind of HR questions that are generally asked in interviews.I prepared sample answers to some of these questions.
For technical questions there were no such specific preparations, I ensured that I had all the basic concepts of civil engineering in mind before appearing for the interviews.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I prepared resume keeping in mind the areas of interest that would suit the company’s requirements. The companies that recruit students from all departments usually tend to prefer students having interests in general management/economics related subjects. I knew about this and while applying to non-core companies I specified my areas of interest as these subjects.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round in Flipkart was the written test. In the test there were about 120 questions asked. The paper was similar to the CAT paper. The paper comprised of reading comprehension, verbal ability, maths, quantitative aptitude and data interpretation. The questions were pretty simple, however the time constraint proved to be a problem. I qualified for the next round.
Total Questions: 120

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This interview was the HR interview. The company had arrived in the campus on the 2nd or the 3rd day of the recruitment season hence I was not at all prepared for the interview. Whatever answers that I gave during the interviews were all spontaneous. The interviewer soon realized that I had come unprepared for the interview and ended the interview very soon. I did not get selected but I got a feel of the kind of questions asked in these interviews.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Flipkart came for placements for the very first time. I had applied for the Management Trainee profile. They were looking for people who had dynamic personality, good communication skills and a good overall profile. I had attended the PPT (pre-placement talk) held by the company and that is where I gained knowledge about the company’s profile.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: While applying to core companies I focused more on my projects and internships and on the other hand while applying to non-core companies I went through the company’s annual report and tried to analyse the kind of work the company was involved in and also the vision the company held and tried to arrive at a common ground keeping in mind the vision of the company and my interest while framing the resume.

Round: Test
Experience: Since I did not prepare for CAT it was slightly difficult for me to clear the written tests. I borrowed some books from my friends and practiced them thoroughly well. The tests are pretty simple which I realized later after giving these tests. The tests require basic mathematics knowledge and some speed. A person having prepared for CAT should have no problems in dealing with these tests.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interviewer was a graduate from IIT Delhi in civil engineering. He asked me some basic questions and told me exactly how Flipkart operates. He asked me to talk about myself. Then he inquired about my 3rd year internship, which I had done in IIT Delhi in the civil engineering department. I told him about the kind of work I did in my internship.
Next he asked me to state the reason for the switch from civil arena to software arena in spite of having done a number of projects and internships in civil sector. Further he asked me a few basic questions related to civil engineering like ‘Which is the largest column built in India till date’.
Lastly he asked me that if offered posting in Bangalore or further south which would I prefer. To this I replied saying that I would prefer a posting somewhere in north India. I believe that this is the primary reason why I squandered my chances of getting recruited in the company.
The company eventually recruited 7 candidates.
Tips: If you are a civil engineer you should have good knowledge about structural engineering because generally each and every company would ask technical questions to a civil engineer from this topic.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Flipkart came for placements for the very first time. I had applied for the Management Trainee profile. They were looking for people who had dynamic profile and those who had good communications skills.

Experience: Similar to CAT level questions. Speed and accuracy is important.
Tips: Aptitude and Verbal are important for any placement test for that matter. Start and practice well before the tests. Don't miss your dream company coz of your poor performance in tests. The more you practice, the easier you can get through.
Duration: 75 minutes

Experience: The topic is to test how much you are inclined to the industry. Moderators are very helpful. Topic is the same for all the groups. One min time to prepare for the topic, about 10 min to discuss. Chance is given for everyone to conclude after GD.
Tips: It is important to define and understand the topic more than paying attention to start and conclude the GD. Knowledge on topic is important in GDs. Topics generally depends on company you are preparing for. Allowing and involving other people shows how well you can perform in a team.
Duration: 15 minutes

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Make sure you are expressing your interests when you are taking them through your resume! Talk in such a way that your resume has something that profile needed! I talked about my course work which is relevant to the profile offered. Case study was to budget a India wide competition in 2 lakhs!!  Exploring as many options as you can is important! Marketing the event, accommodation for judges, participants, venue charges, Facilities and requirements should be taken care of!
Tips: Make sure you are talking to them and explaining them about what is gong in your mind! Interviewer can correct you at any point! Asking questions about information you do not know or have is always advisable.

Round: Other Interview
Experience: It is important that you read about company and related companies to answer such questions! Lot of reading is through newspapers and articles! Understanding market models is important! It is important to know and define difference between E-commerce and E-Retail!Once you say the problems faced by E-commerce, you will be asked to suggest solutions for the same! Though it is not expected that you can solve the problem very much technically, having insight is important!
Tips: Make sure you have answers for HR questions prepared! Why you? Why this company? Such questions are common in any interview! Use statistics only if you are sure about them!

Skills: Communication skill
College Name: IIT MADRAS
Motivation: Developed interest for E-commerce companies!

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Preliminary test was online, basically aptitude, English and logic.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The discussion was based on pros and cons of social media. The traits common to the candidates that
progressed to the next round were eloquence, balanced and logica thought, contributed to the arguement
with valid points, gave meaty examples to support their views, allowed others to speak.

Round: Other Interview
Experience: The interview was short and direct to the point. The interviewer asked pertinent questions about the reason I wanted to join the company, why I applied for that particular profile and how I believed I could contribute to the company's progress.

College Name: IIT Roorkee
Motivation: Looked up the functioning and history of the company on the internet. Gained some information about short and long term plans and how I could contribute towards their achievement

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Questions of verbal and logical reasoning, data interpretation etc.
Duration: 90-120 minutes

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The topic will be relevant to the times and you will have
about 2 minutes of speaking time, in total, if you're lucky. Make that count.
The GD topic was "FDI in Indian Economy". You could take it in a positive or negative stride. However, the stand had to be backed up by solid facts and emphatic statements. Some keywords were, loss of jobs(-), R&D(+), corruption and red tapism(-), higher prices for raw materials(+) etc.
Tips: GDs have a tendency to become a shouting match, the end result in such cases is the entire group getting rejected. If however, it does become a slugfest, the better option is to calm the offended party by playing the
moderator. The objective of any healthy group discussion is listening to everybody's opinion and offering arguments or counter arguments till most of the people are convinced and find a common ground. Opening
the GD can fetch you important points but do so only if you are immensely confident about what you are going to say. There are numerous sites/blogs out there which can help you with the nuances of a GD, but nothing beats practise and mock runs.
Duration: 15-20 minutes

Round: Interview
Experience: Personal Interviews(10-30 min)- If you've sufficiently impressed the interviewer during the interview process, it'll be a breeze. If you've left him on the fence, he'll grill you enough till he reaches a decision.
Know your CV inside out, rehearse the questions with a friend, attend workshops organised by the Placement Office. The interviewer has the right to question ANYTHING(hobbies/languages/extra currics)
you put on your CV.
