Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per the norms of our institute’s placement cell. For Tata Motors I laid emphasis on both – my technical skills as well as extra-curricular activities.

Round: Test
Experience: The written test had both technical as well as general aptitude questions. The aptitude questions were easy as per the standards of CAT examination. Manufacturing was the major topic that they had asked besides fluid was another important topic. They had also asked topics covering almost all aspects of mechanical engineering. Surface knowledge of the major topics in the mechanical engineering area would be more than sufficient to clear the test.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The next round was the Group Discussion round and the topic for discussion was “Will India be a Super Power”. The group was around 10 students and 4 students from the group were selected for the next round. They were looking for students with good communication skills and those who can communicate their point in a group.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The panel began asking questions from my resume. I had written German as one of the languages I knew. So they asked me questions related to German language. They asked me words and their meanings. They then asked me simple technical questions. I had written my interest as Solid mechanics, IC engines and Thermodynamics. My preferred subject was Solid Mechanics but they refused to ask question from it. Instead they questioned me on IC engines - What is brake horse power and questions related to knocking. Most of the questions asked were pretty simple though.

The HR interview session was pretty long though. They asked me about my aims and aspirations and also about my family. They lay a little more importance to your family values as well as on the fact that whether you will stick with their organization for long term

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Tata is a household name in India. I knew about this company and its activities through its promotional ads and also from its site. The company was focussing on the core technical knowledge and did not lay a lot of emphasis on knowledge about the company.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I usually changed my “Areas of Interest” as per the company profile.

Round: Test
Experience: First round was coding and aptitude based test. The coding test was simple and involved simple questions on C++ and output based questions. The aptitude test was on the CAT pattern and was slightly easier than the CAT examination.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Next was the interview having both technical and HR part. In the technical interview I was asked about the simple algorithms of C++ like swapping, memory allocation, palindromes, permutation and combination etc. I was also asked few questions on data structure like pointer, linked list, trees etc. In the HR interview I was asked questions like “Why do you want to join this company” etc.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute’s placement cell norms. I only changed my “Area of Interest” section according to the company.

Round: Test
Experience: The test had questions on aptitude and logical reasoning. The test was different for the two profiles. The Business Analyst profile had an aptitude based test whereas the technology based profile had both – an aptitude based test and a test having programming based questions. The programming part was not so difficult but the concepts of programming and data structures should be clear to ace the test. The aptitude test was simpler and similar to the CAT exam. No such specific preparation is required but a little bit of practise would help.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The topic for my GD was “If you want to remove one state from India which one would it be?” The topic was very good as it helped gauge our views related to other states culture and how we perceive things.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Format for selection was different for the business analyst profile and the technology based profile. For the BA it was a written test followed by GD and then an interview. While for coding profile it was two written tests followed by interview. In the BA profile’s first round puzzles of various kinds were asked – for example decision making based on clues and thereby reaching a certain result. In the GD the topic was that if you would like to remove one state from India which one would it be. Next in the interview I was tested upon my knowledge about the company (and other similar questions). I was also asked about my favourite website and in what ways would I further improve it? And how would I regulate a new MS Office version launch, not the technical coding part but the process in general.
Tips: Get to know more about the company. Visit its site and attend the pre placement talk to be well aware about its operations.

Experience: The selection criterion was that the candidate should have a CGPA greater than 8.

Round: Test
Experience: There was a written round in which the candidate was asked to answer questions on logical reasoning and verbal ability. There were also some puzzles asked in the written test.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the interview round there were questions from my interests, latest technology related questions and HR related questions. The HR questions were simple and were related to my goals and aspirations and also related to my strengths and weaknesses. They also asked me to tell them how am I more suitable for the company than the other candidates.

They also asked me about Differential (in auto-mobiles) and What is 4x4 wheel drive?
At the end of the interview they asked me if I had any questions.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: iRunway shortlisted the candidates for the interview round based on their resume/CGPA. Almost all the candidates shortlisted had a CGPA more than 8.5

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: iRunway conducted the first interview on Skype. In the interview they focussed on programming, especially C++. As I had done a couple of software based projects, they asked a lot of questions related to those projects. Also the interviewers expected me to be familiar with computer terminology, hardware as well as software, how does the computer work (the internal functioning), the role of task manager in a computer etc. They also asked a few questions related to Industrial Engineering (very basic ones) and a couple of very simple logical puzzles. Answering those puzzles didn’t require any prior preparation. This first interview lasted for about 15 minutes.

In the second interview round, some of the questions asked were:

Difference between 3G and 4G
Difference between CDMA and GSM
Difference between Blu Ray and normal discs
Difference between iPad and iPhone
Difference between android and apple markets
What is a dual core processor?
As iRunway works on IPRs, they asked very basic questions on IPRs like what is IPR.
Tips: Stay updated with the latest technologies and computer/mobile related terminologies. Read a bit about IPRs.
They put a lot of stress on programming and latest technologies. The interviewers look for a general interest in latest technologies related to mobile phones, computers etc.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
They were least interested in my resume. They cared more about your analytical skills rather than on your on campus activities.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test which had a few questions from data interpretation and some questions that were quite peculiar to the consulting sector as such. Only 24 students got shortlisted for the next round out of close to 350 applicants.
Tips: The cut off for the written test was very high. So ensuring accuracy and attempting all the questions is important.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: The next round was the case study round. The case that I was presented with was to calculate the number of hoardings in a metropolitan city with the help of given data. I failed to qualify beyond this round.
Tips: One should prepare for “Guesstimate” type case interviews (where the interviewee is tried to estimate the final answer based on logical deduction and analysis of the given facts) for this company as they give very high emphasis to the performance in the case study interview round.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Indus Insight is a start-up which uses quantitative analytics to give solution to real life problems encountered in business. The company was founded by an IITB alumnus. It is growing at a fast pace and the best source of information about them was the pre placement talk organised by them.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
For a consultant profile, they do look for a consistent academic performance, scholarships, Olympiads etc. So I did make sure to include all my academic achievements in my resume.

Round: Test
Experience: This was the first round and was conducted in October itself, well before the final placement process that begins only in December. The test had 20 questions. All the questions described a particular situation and 4 options describing solutions/implications of the situation were provided. The candidate was supposed to choose one of the 4 alternatives, which according to him, was the best possible answer. From what I recall, there wasn’t much calculation involved. Use of calculator was permitted.
Tips: Attempt all the questions. Be accurate.

Round: Guesstimate Interview
Experience: Around 23 students got shortlisted for the next round of selection process which was held in December.
This round was based on “guesstimate” problems. I was asked to calculate the total annual revenue of McDonalds in India. No other data was given. Use of calculator was not permitted. This interview lasted for about 10-15 minutes.
Some other candidate was asked to estimate the length of roads in Delhi. Another one was asked to calculate the number of road side ads/banners in Delhi.
Tips: Prepare for guesstimate problems and qualitative case analysis.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Indus Insights is a new company. It had a team of only 6 people when it came for recruiting. Not much information was available on the internet. I did attend its pre-placement talk and that acted as the main source of information about the company and the profile offered.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Everyone above the CGPA of 6.0 was asked to appear for the written test. The written test had question from quantitative analysis and verbal reasoning. We also had some questions from the core mechanical engineering subjects. These questions weren't very tough and could be answered if someone had an overall knowledge of the basics.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: After the written test students were shortlisted for the group discussion. Our group consisted of 7 candidates and we were given the flexibility to choose a topic of our own choice. Out of our group, 4 students were shortlisted for interviews. Overall, around 11 students were shortlisted for interviews.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In my interview round, all the technical questions were related to my intern and project. Other than that there were HR Questions. They asked me other HR related questions like Tell me about yourself, your strengths and weakness. Also they asked me to describe why I was suitable for a company. Further they wanted to describe myself as a non-living being and then also explain what are the qualities required to be a leader.

Overall it was a good experience but a person should have in depth knowledge of his interns and projects to go past the interview.

I knw aapko pata nai hoga coz u r nt frm BIHAR.. but mam I gurantee ki ye bahaut tasty hota h and aap isko lagataar kitna v kha lo aur aap kabhi v bore nai honge aur utna unhygenic v nai h as isme utna oil nai lagta hai..and mam iska investment cost kaafi kam hai,...as low as 20,000 and its going to give us the huge profit ..,,,,mam mai maanta hun ye kaafi low level pe idea hai, thoda cheap hai... but mam maine yai socha hai...MAM: ok,so wt u have extra dat others dunt have here?? ME: mam, here is a list of 200 phone numbers which i hv memorised or others,u cn ask any number from here..den she asked me 3 numbers n I replied very fastly.. denMAM: dude, tumne ise kaise yaad kiya?? tum confuse nai hote qa??ME: actually mam, mere pas ek tym pe aisa phone tha jisme jyada number save nai ho paata tha toh mjhe vo number galti or alag reason se yaad rakhna padtaa tha... n jb v mjhe us number pe call karna padta tha tab mai vo number ko soch kar k us number pe call karta tha n isi habbit se or sayad koi aur v reasons se mjhe vo number yaad hota tha..so ds is the reason mam..MAM:accha..aur extra qa h tmhare paas??ME:MA,u can ask anything abt calculation level stuffs as I prepared for my dream company "FUTURES FIRST" bt mera usme ho na paaya and maine bahaut prepare kiya tha..so u can at any level!!MAM:tell me the squres of 69,73...123,176,253,etc etc 357 tak kuch v total 13 squares puche (toh maine kuch kuch tym leke saara bata diya)MAM: impressed!! .....OK ANURAG,WAIT OUTSIDE....
Tips: My conversation skills is good but at that time I was feeling nervous and if I wouldn't have asked her to converse in Hindi then I couldn't have feel confident at that time dat I should and I couldnt be me and the reason for giving me a chance for the 2nd interview was only my confidence and my wildness. So always be truthful, be confident and be wild ( try always to be different from others according to me). Although you don't know anything about coding, you don't know the thing for what they are looking for but If u are confident enough and you got the balls to impress others then it might help you a ton!

6 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
I usually changed my “Areas of Interest” as per the company profile. For Headstrong I mentioned subjects that dealt with coding and data structure.

Round: Test
Experience: First round was a written test containing 90 aptitude based questions and the time allotted for the same was 90 minutes. Questions were of high difficulty level; most of the questions based on probability, permutation and combination. 40 people were shortlisted out of the 180 applicants.
Duration: 90 minutes
Total Questions: 90

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: In Group Discussion there were 11 people in my group. The topic for the discussion was the “impact of family drama daily soaps (saas bahu serials) on the society”. Almost all of us agreed to the fact that these serials were sending wrong message to the society. They were interested in students who were expressive. 3 people got selected from my group.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The first round was a technical interview. Questions related to my family and areas of interest were also asked though. Questions related to C++ were asked and the topic of data structure was their main focus. They asked me questions on linked list and other forms of data structure. Finally they asked few general puzzles too. This interview continued for around 20 minutes.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the HR interview, questions were asked on why they should choose me and why I had opted for Headstrong. They also asked which location I would prefer for the job. They wanted someone who would be comfortable with any location whether it be south or north India. This last interview was small and lasted around 5-10 minutes.
Tips: Preparation of puzzles foe the interview would be beneficial.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most information regarding the company was obtained by attending the pre placement talk. The company did not check much about our knowledge related to the company but were more concerned with our technical knowledge.
