Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The selection criterion was the CGPA. After that we had the written test. There were two objective question based tests, each having 30 questions and a duration of 30 minutes. The first test was an aptitude test – quite a few questions were from time and work, time, speed, distance etc.

There was a second written test for core subjects (mechanical engineering and metallurgy engineering). The test had majority of the questions from mechanical engineering – hence the metallurgy engineering guys were at some degree of disadvantage.
Tips: Prepare for aptitude, even if you are not preparing for CAT. Not clearing the test gives a very bad feeling.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the interview round they asked me about myself. They also asked me about my family background, there was a CV check, they talked to me about my passion for mechanical engineering, and after that interviewer asked me to relate my projects and internship with my passion.

Last question he asked was about my interest, and my favourite pastime which led to a long conversation over ‘The Alchemist’.

They were looking for candidates who were confident about themselves and who would stick with the organization for long term.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The selection process had a written test as the first round. It had questions from logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude and from core mechanical engineering topics. It was not such a difficult test and if you had surface knowledge of the different topics of mechanical you could have cleared the written test. After the written test there was a single interview for shortlisted candidates.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My interview proceeded along the following lines (I had been advised by people not to follow this casual attitude and I don’t know what I was thinking while answering the questions). There was only one interviewer.

Sir: Good afternoon have a seat.

Me: Thank you Sir, How are you?

Sir: I am good, thanks. So tell me something about yourself.

Me: Sir I (So I started about my family background, parents and everything while he looked over my resume, I had prepared to leave the answer on BAJA as that was my strong point, but he interrupted me in the middle only)

Sir: I see that you have done a lot of work on fatigue. (3 projects, internship and area of interest, I had forgotten to modify my resume for Reliance) Can you define for me what fatigue is?

Me: Sure sir (so I start to explain him fatigue and its analysis, how and what I had done in my projects etc.)

Sir: That is correct, but you still haven’t given me the definition of fatigue.

Me: Sir, (I again started to explain it to him and most of the conversation was in Hindi).

From here on most of the interview was in Hindi and also informal in terms of the tone.

Sir: You are running around the bush but not telling me the definition of fatigue (from here on whole interview was kind of informal)

Me: Sir, have a look at my CGPA do you think I will remember definition but I guarantee you that I know the practical aspect of things. I believe in learning by doing.

Sir: I never asked you to give me a bookish definition

Me: Sir, I have already told you what I knew about fatigue)

Sir: I think you did not understand what I was asking correctly (after this he explained to me what I had told earlier but from a different point of view. I was telling from the 'effect' point of view and he was explaining it from the 'cause' point of view. He explained me the same for 10 minutes and he seemed quite knowledgeable on that subject. It was more of discussion as I asked him once or twice about what he was speaking. He explained it to me in a very nice way and concluded that that he wanted the answer from the ‘Cause’ point of view.

Me: Okay sir.

Sir: Good. Okay now define for me 'Stress'.

Me: Sir, you are again asking me a definition

Sir: (Laughing) Don’t worry Just explain me

Me: So I started explaining him all about stress and everything

Next he used different objects on the table to apply force on points and asked me the stress state at different cross sections and some more questions about yield stress etc. which I answered correctly

Sir: Okay tell me about this project (from my resume)

Me: Again I rambled on. That project was kind of a goodwill project for disabled, which quite impressed him and he asked me why we weren't pursuing it as a start-up to which I answered from some lack of market, funding and competition point of view.

Sir: (He asked me then about some difficulties we might have faced during that project in management or team)

Me: (gave some examples and their solutions)

Sir: We seem to have talked quite a lot. Others might be waiting. Do you have any questions?

Me: No sir, if you want we can talk more as I have lots of time (at this point my phone vibrated, I ignored but he noticed and took his phone out to check)

Me: Sorry sir, this was my phone.

Sir: Laughing oh don’t worry, you can pick it up if it’s urgent.

Me: Not at all sir

Sir: Okay tell me what you did on Internship?

Me: (I explained everything in detail)

Me: (Past half hour all he had asked me about machine design & fatigue and everything) Sir does reliance do anything in Machine Design? (A stupid question to ask)

Sir: Nope, not at all.

Me: Sir, there might be some fatigue in pipe systems due to repeated pressure variance?

Sir: Yes there is, but we outsource that work (then he explained to me how difficult it is to outsource and maintain standards and all).

Me: Okay.

Sir: So, what would you work on at Reliance?

Me: Anything I can get my hands on...

Sir: Pumps?

Me: Definitely.

Sir: But you haven’t worked on them yet.

Me: Sir I haven’t had the opportunity yet, but whatever I got my hands on has been great until now.

Sir: So are you a ‘desk job’ sort of person or ‘field job’ type of person?

Me: Sir, even though I had a good JEE rank, I didn’t choose the branch computer science but chose Mechanical because I wanted to work in the field. I have been participating in BAJA events all these years.

Sir: Good (Smiling, but then he and I were smiling pretty much whole the interview)

Sir: If I give you a pump, can you open it up?

Me: In two minutes sir.

Sir: We have spent a lot of time, if you have any questions you can ask me.

Me: No sir, thanks for the opportunity.

Sir: Ask me something if you want to.

Me: Sir, any feedback on my interview? This was my first (A second stupid question)

Sir: He smiled and said you will receive the feedback in the evening

Me: Thank you Sir!

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had mentioned my extra-curricular activities in my resume in a detailed and organised manner (all listed in a chronological order). Most of these were techno-managerial activities (organizational responsibilities in my tech fest). I had participated in an event called Robocon which added a new dimension to me resume.
I had done a project and a couple of internships during my four years of study – I mentioned the details of these in my resume. Although the resume that we submitted was in a standard format as per the norms of our placement cell, I referred to a website of Princeton University to prepare my resume. It’s a very good website and hugely referred by students for preparing their resume. I also got some valuable insights from my seniors for building my resume.
I laid stress on my achievements related to the technical field, because I wanted to land a job in my core field of study.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test that consisted mainly of general aptitude questions (no technical questions were asked). Anyone who would have prepared for CAT (MBA entrance test for IIM’s) would have found the test easily negotiable. I myself wasn’t troubled much because of my preparation for CAT. There were 30 questions and time allotted was 35 minutes. They short-listed a lot of candidates for the next round. From mechanical engineering 8 students got short-listed.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The next round was the personal interview round. They asked me for a brief introduction. Then they questioned me on certain points that I had written in my resume. They asked me some general questions on ‘Fluid Mechanics’ and stressed upon ‘Rotary Pumps.’ They asked me that if I had to increase the volume of the rotary pump what factor should I consider. I pondered over the question for few seconds and replied that the r.p.m. should be altered.

Further since I was involved in some societies like The A.S.M.E. (American Society Of Mechanical Engineers) and S.A.E. (Society of Automotive Engineer) which I had specified in my resume, he found a link between my area of interest which was ‘Machine Designing’ and the work done by the society and started asking me some trivial questions like ‘What is width of the thread according to A.S.M.E. standard used in the bolt.’ Then he specified a particular machine part (which I don’t exactly remember) and asked me to state the material used to build it according to S.A.E. standards. I answered these questions correctly.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Reliance is a well known name in India. There was no such specific research done related to the company. The only fact that may be helpful is that they don’t offer office jobs as such and a past experience of plant (internship) may be helpful.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a resume as per the standards laid down by our placement cell. It is a core sector company so I mentioned my internships and other projects (those I was well versed with) and those that were related to Electrical Engineering.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was the written test consisting of two sections. One of the sections was dedicated to the quantitative ability, logical reasoning and verbal ability questions, and the other section consisted of technical questions. The first section was pretty easy but required both speed and accuracy because there were 30 questions in the paper and the time allotted was only 30 minutes.
In the technical section the questions asked were from ‘Machining’ and ‘Power Lines’. The company generally repeats its questions in the written tests. You can easily go through the previous years’ recruitment test papers from the company’s website. From my department nearly fifteen people appeared for the test, out of which seven were shortlisted for the next round.
Duration: 30 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The next round was the personal interview round. The interview was complete technical interview. They enquired about my internship. Since my internship was based on ‘Induction Motors’ they grilled me on this topic. They asked me to explain the steps involved in the creation of an induction motor. They also asked me some questions on transmission lines. Further they also asked me a question on circuit breaker. In this question they asked me to state the voltage output when a circuit breaker is combined with the transformer with the help of the given data.
Tips: Prepare yourself with technical topics related to Electrical machines and Power System Protection.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Reliance is a very reputed company in the country and has operations in the field of power as well. I did not know much about the profile and attending the pre placement talk helped a lot.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I only changed my “Area of Interest” section according to the company.

Round: Test
Experience: First round was a written test containing questions from data interpretation and quantitative aptitude. Simple questions related to programming/algorithms were also asked in the test.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Next was the interview where questions from C++ and simple puzzles were asked:
I was asked about linked lists and how would I print the list in a single iteration
3 switch 3 bulb puzzles – In this we had 3 switches outside the room and we were allowed to go inside only once and tell which switch is for what (tube light, fan or bulb)
The same puzzles were asked for everyone so I answered them but he later asked me two additional puzzles.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most of the information I obtained about the company and the profile was from the pre-placement talk.

6 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a resume as per the standards laid down by our placement cell. I specifically highlighted my knowledge in Data Structures for Sum Total.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was an online written test. The test comprised of multiple sections like logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude and pattern matching questions. Some questions with a time limit of their own were also asked – for example we were given a series of numbers and we had to find the odd one. Some situation based questions to judge our leadership qualities and decision making skills were also asked.
Tips: The test is different from those normally asked. They ask situational based questions which may repeat itself in different form in the same paper so as to check our response remains the same. So ensure that your answers remain the same even though the situation is put in a different way.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The next round was the Group Discussion (GD) round. We were divided into groups of 10 each. The topic allocated to my group was on the Indian Premier League (IPL). The company shortlisted 4 candidates from my group for the next round.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The company conducted two interviews. The first was the technical interview. They asked some basic questions on data structures like ‘What are the day to day uses of data structures?’ and told me to explain the concept of graph trees. In C++ they asked me explain the steps involved in creating stacks.
Tips: Prepare yourself with basic C++ programming for the interview. They only test your ability to solve basic problems which may be sorting, searching or simple applications of the formulae. Learn Data Structures as this is important for interviews.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the HR questions apart from asking the general questions like ‘Tell me about yourself’ and ‘What are your strengths and weaknesses?’ They posed a situation based question. The situation was that if I was handed over some work by the company and at the same time my friends propose that we go for a short trip then in that case what would I give more preference to.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Sum Total came for placement to our campus for the very first time and I came to know about the company and the profile from the pre-placement talk itself.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per the norms of our institute’s placement cell. I wanted to get recruited into an IT/ITES related company hence I stressed upon my knowledge in the areas of data structure, coding and micro-processors.

Round: Test
Experience: The first round was a written test consisting questions on general aptitude and programming. The test was a subjective test. In the coding section questions asked were on trees and data structures. Some C++ questions were also asked wherein we were supposed to develop algorithms for the given problems. The paper was not very tough and was of one hour duration.
Tips: Try to brush up your knowledge of C++ to fare well in the written test.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The next round was the interview round. The interview lasted only a short while. In the interview the questions asked were technical ones and completely programming oriented. They asked me to name the programming languages that I could proficiently code in, I named CSS, java, C++ and some others. With this the interview was over.
Tips: The more languages you know the better while appearing for Ophio.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Ophio is a software company. I didn’t know much about the company but I came to know about it from the pre placement talk. They lay a lot of emphasis on the programming languages you know.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
For ISGEC I laid emphasis on the technical aspects in my resume. It is a technical company so I mentioned those subjects in my resume in which I had a strong command.

Round: Test
Experience: The written test was almost totally technical with only a small section having questions on general aptitude. The test covered almost all topics of mechanical engineering. There were around 80 questions out of which around 15 questions related to general aptitude. Manufacturing process is one topic that others should look for before appearing for test and surface knowledge of all other topics is also required. For the next round 6 people were selected (two students from production engineering discipline and 4 from mechanical engineering discipline).

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The final round was an interview. The interview was light and was mostly based on my main subjects which were vibrations and solid mechanics. In solid mechanics, they asked me about bending moments and shear force diagram for beams. They also asked me few theoretical questions. I was also asked about the definition of definite hardness. In vibrations, they asked me to derive equations for figures which had few dampers, springs etc. I had to derive them but not solve them. The interviewers were really helpful throughout the interview.

There were almost no HR questions. They selected only one student and one other was added to the company’s waitlist.
Tips: Prepare one or two of your core subjects with great depth. They would ask you for your strong areas and question you on them.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I came to know about the company through the placement cell. The presentation given by the company during the pre-placement talk was the first source of information for me.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume was as per the norms of our institute’s placement office. One should mention only relevant points in the resume because if they ask you something from the resume and you are unable to answer then they will reject you bluntly.

Round: Test
Experience: In the written test the questions asked were mainly aptitude based. The company had sent us some sample question papers before the written test. The questions in the test appeared from those sample papers only. Most of the questions were tricky – questions were framed in a very lengthy manner and the answers or the data required to solve the question was hidden in the last few lines. Many students wasted their time analysing such questions completely. Out of the 80 odd students who appeared for the test only 11 qualified for the next round.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: In the technical interview he asked me whether I knew programming, I replied in the negative. He asked me to suggest an algorithm to a problem. The problem was based on swapping of numbers. At first I gave a very bland reply. The interviewer wasn’t convinced by my reply and gave me another opportunity to explain me the process. This time I managed to answer appropriately. The interviewer then enquired about my internship and my projects.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The HR interview was taken by some top company official. He asked me to narrate any challenging incident in my life that I had to struggle through to emerge out of it. One important thing to note here is that your CGPA would speak for you – if you have a good CGPA half the battle is won.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: TCS recruits a large number of students from various colleges across the country. Knowing this fact beforehand I was not much interested in joining the company. I appeared for its process as a last resort. The company had organized a pre-placement talk. I attended the talk and before appearing for the first round I went through the brochure that was given out during the pre-placement talk.

You do not require any specific information regarding the company to ace the interviews or any questionnaire.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume that I used while applying in different companies was nearly the same, however I did incorporate certain changes in areas of interest and the projects to make them more compatible with the profile/company which i was applying to. For instance while applying to Schlumberger I highlighted some of the technical projects.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I did not prepare for the Group Discussion (GD) activities. The second round conducted by Tata Motors was the GD round. The topic of the GD was ‘What is the backbone of Indian economy: the service sector or the manufacturing sector?’ My group comprised of 7 candidates out of which 4 got selected for the interview round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: I prepared for the HR interviews by writings and reciting answers to some frequently asked questions. The interviewers began by asking me to speak about myself. Next they enquired about my family background. Then they asked me to specify the reason to opt for mechanical engineering.

The interviewer then moved over to technical questions. The interviewers asked to specify my areas of interest. I replied stating refrigeration and air-conditioning, IC engines and fluid machinery as my areas my interest. In one of the questions he made a diagram with a pump, a reservoir and a relief valve and asked me to calculate something which i do not remember. Unfortunately we were not taught relief valve, and I told him about this. So the interviewer changed the topic and asked me to specify the topics which we were taught in our engineering course. I told him everything that i managed to recall at that moment. He then started asking me questions, some of them were:

What is the difference between positive Displacement Pump and Rotor Dynamics Pump?
In refrigerators only things that are kept in freezers freeze but the freezing process does not take place elsewhere in the refrigerators, why?
If in a refrigerator a particular wire is cut open, then where would gas come out and where would the liquid flow out from?
If the door of the refrigerator, which is kept in a room, is opened then would the room get cooled or heated.
The interview panel of Tata Motors is to simply test your basics. For instance in one of the questions they asked me to state the basic principle governing fluid machinery. This basic principle is the Pascal’s law. When I was asked this question, Pascal’s law never crossed my mind. Consequently, I asked him to quote which law he was talking about. He said Pascal’s law. In spite of him naming the law, it still took me about 3 to 4 minutes to recall the Pascal’s law. Once i managed to recall it i gave him the proper answer. The interview lasted for about 35 minutes.

The company eventually recruited 5 students.
Tips: The technical questions asked in the interviews are the very basic once. Generally people tend to forget the basics that were taught to them in the initial years. Revise the introductory sections of the chapters. Focus more on the concepts rather than the equations.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Tata is a household name in India. I knew about this company and its activities through its promotional ads and also from its website. The company was focussing on the core technical knowledge and did not lay a lot of emphasis on knowledge about the company.
