Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: My resume was simple and was a mix of both technical stuff and extracurricular activities. It was as per the norms of the placement cell of our institute.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Interview (HR and technical, 30 minutes). Some of the questions asked were:
What did you have for lunch? (Ice breaking question)
This question is not a part of their judgment. It’s just a type of ice breaker, an initiative of HR people to make you comfortable with the atmosphere. Be happy, carry a smile and its obvious to be nervous but don’t panic. Interact with them, don’t answer this question in a couple of words yet please don’t give all the ingredients of your diet. Utilize this question to loosen up a bit.
Tell me about yourself and your family (emphasis was on family)
Nestle is a company that looks into values and ethics with deep consideration. Frame your answer with less emphasis on you and more on your family. Try introducing them to your family ethics, moral teachings, their role in your life etc. Be honest and don’t exaggerate.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: All questions were based on my resume. It is strictly advisable to be thorough with your resume and be prepared for practical questions related to your projects. Some of the technical questions asked were:
1) Explain your project during the internship with ITC (emphasis on result)
2nd year internship project: Cooling towers
2) What type of cooling tower would be advisable for a humid area? I explained them my reasons for the choice that I’ll make using proper psychrometric chart. My answer was not completely correct but they were happy with the level of detail to which I was able to think about at that moment.
3) What is design speed of a turbine? I was not at all confident with the answer. I was framing my answer by judging the reaction of the interviewer. He was also helping me to explain what I was thinking.
4) What will happen to the power being produced if wind speed increases? I said it would increase but they didn’t agree with it and said that gears will be present to modulate the speed of generator accordingly. So I twisted a little suggesting that I didn’t included gears into my consideration and I was emphasizing on the energy limits that can be captured by the turbine. Show some presence of mind. It would be of real help.
5) Really Important one and asked abruptly: How was your CAT exam? I didn’t appear for it but if you do, try and decline it politely.
6) What sort of work you are looking for?
I was also asked questions related to my project (difference between a HAWT and VAWT (horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines).

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Nestle is a very famous company and most of us have used one or the other product of Nestle. Also some of my seniors working there gave a very positive feedback about the company.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Nestle required all its candidates to fill a form. It consisted of some HR type questions. Some of the questions were-

Mention your strengths/weaknesses.
What are your career goals?
Give one instance where you demonstrated leadership skills.
Give one instance where you failed.
The short listing for the next round was based on the CGPA. Almost all the students with CGPA greater than 6.5 or 7 from Production and Industrial Engineering got shortlisted for the next round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The next round of the selection process was an interview. The interview was a mix of technical and HR questions. Nestle does put a lot of stress on family background of the candidate. Also they often ask questions like “Why don’t you go for MBA?” or “Why don’t you go for MS?” So every candidate should prepare answers to these questions. Some of the questions asked were-
1) Difference between accuracy and precision
2) 7 basic quality tools and 7 advanced quality tools
3) Histogram, Line diagram and Venn diagram
4) What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Another very specific question asked by the interviewers to almost every candidate was “Would you able to work/survive in a remotely located plant?” So the interested candidates should prepare an answer to this question. One can cite examples from his/her travelling experiences or stay at different places for considerable time periods to support their answer.
Tips: You can easily find the standard HR interview questions on the net. Some of the standard questions are like “Tell us about yourself”, “Where do you see yourself 5 years down the line”, “What are your strengths/weaknesses” etc. Prepare the answers, if not in full then at least the points, to all these questions. Think of some instances from your life or from your resume that you can use as examples while answering these questions.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I got information about the company and the profile offered from the pre-placement talk and the website.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
The first shortlist was done on the basis of resumes and the “minimum CGPA” criteria to apply for the company was 6.00

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The final round was the personal interview round where HR questions as well as technical questions were asked. Being a mechanical engineer I was asked technical question only on my core subjects. They asked me about my “areas of interest”, to which I replied ‘Dynamics of materials and Kinematics of materials’. They asked me few questions from that, but very soon all their questions got exhausted and they asked me for my other areas of interest, this time I said thermodynamics. They also asked me about Stroke Yoke mechanism and ‘cooling towers’.

The HR (Human Resource) questions were the ones that I feel I could not suitably reply to. They were looking for people who were very clear in their ideas. They also laid emphasis on family values.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most of the information regarding the company was obtained by attending the Pre Placement Talk. It is better to know about the products of Nestle that one uses in their homes. They also like to know what all idea you have about the work that they are offering. They also lay emphasis on family values.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: If you are good at problem solving it's easy to crack the written test
Tips: Subjects better if you prefer to study from standard books and have a clear understanding of concepts

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: If an interviewer is cool and very much interested to listen to you, then it's all about how easily you make him feel that you are the perfect candidate for them. Goldman Sachs interviewer are very cool and have a very good behavioral attitude. They are very interested to listen to you and at every moment they give you chance to prove yourself. It's up to you how you impress them
Tips: Feel interview like a techie discussion with your friend. Whatever you are thinking about say it loudly so that interviewer can listen what you are thinking. Better if you make it a discussion

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Interviewer was very cool and very nice person

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Interviewer was very cool and very nice person

General Tips: Do what you love and Love what you do. That leaves no regrets and doubles your performance. Always be hopeful, never give up. Even if you have less CGPA (even 5.3 has also worked that were mine), be confident to give your best.
Skill Tips: Before interview try to get cool. Get yourself away from the crowd, there shouldn't be any worries in your mind related to interview. More important believe on yourself that boosts your confidence.
At the time of interview let the interview know your strength and the area in which you have mastery. Once interviewer gets into your domain then the day is yours.
Note: Have strong faith on your skills. Because if you show your skills, it doesn't matter how worse is your CGPA, they will hire you. A guy with CGPA less than 5.5 can make it possible then why can't you!!
For preparation always try to follow concepts from standard books. Never try to study from local authors.

Confidence is also a major factor,Strongly Committed to face any kind of challenging problems and able to find some solution out of it. They test your approach of solving a particular question. Generally questions are tough.
Truthfulness: Be honest if you already know the answer for question, do tell them. If you don't know much about some topic let them know because they never want to judge you on what you are not good. They will assess you only in the area you are comfortable with.
Skills: Problem solving, Confidence, Truthfulness
College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: On one side Motivation comes from the Package offered by this company: Highest paying company along with Worldquant, Tower Research. I heard being a strats at Goldman Sachs is really tough task since they focus more on mathematical aptitude; probability, P&C etc. That motivates you to give your best efforts to see where do you stand in the world.
Designing algorithms for solving challenging business problems is the job of strats, that's what attracted me more towards this company.
Funny Moments: (Round1)Interviewer: Why do you have consistent poor performance; 77%(10th), 67%(12th), 65%(B.E.), 5.3CGPA(M.Tech.)?
Me: I don't study for marks, I study to learn the concepts and have feel of it. If I would have been wrong I wouldn't be here.
(Round3)
Interviewer: Introduce yourself !
(I never tried to prepare for such interview questions but at that instant what came out from my mouth was surprising for me)
Me: Sir, I am Praveen Jharbade, pursuing MTech in CSE from IIT Roorkee and I love numbers. I am a big fan of Srinivasa Ramanujan. If you will give me a series I can tell you the hidden patterns inside that series.
(In the end Interviewer was in doubt if I was inclined towards research or working in Industry)
Interviewer: Where do you want to see yourself in future; going for higher studies or in Industry?(Not exact question. I felt he meant to ask this)
Me: Sir, if I would have told you that I love Cricket you wouldn't ask this question. Sir, I love numbers and in my spare time I used to play with numbers and series.
Finally I would say 3 rounds taken by 3 different interviewer and I can say they are the awesome people and of course genius. I would say it would be my great pleasure to work under their supervision.

1 Interview Round

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The selection procedure for the candidates was based on their internship, academic projects and most importantly their CGPA.
The first round was roughly a 45 minute interview (at least for me, not sure about all others). They were really interested in knowing more my internship with the Standard Chartered bank. Apart from the situation based HR questions, they went after evaluating me based on qualitative case studies, one after the other. Fresh ideas for running and delineating any business was required from the word go. I was asked around 6 cases more or less focusing on improving business and adding new verticals. In one line – enthusiasm, passion, business insights and powerful/effective communication skills was what they were looking for.

The second round again lasted for 30 minutes. This time I was tested on a numerical case study. The panel of interviewers got changed this time around. Apart from this, stress based HR questions were asked for other half of the interview. Be confident and be yourself.

They finally selected 3 students.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The selection criterion was at the beginning only on the basis for CGPA but later they also chose students on the basis of their profile even if their CGPA was low.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the interview round they asked very few HR questions but were more centered towards technical questions. In the HR questions they asked me about how I will handle tough situations, what were my strengths and weaknesses, where did I see myself in five years and why should they choose me. Besides this they also asked me the following questions:

1)Questions from the resume.
2)Simple Amplifier working.
3)Differential Amplifier.
4)Basic coding problem, Fibonacci series print. Now generate this series on hardware i.e. using seven segment display build a circuit to generate this series up to f(4).
5)General Boolean expression solving problem.
This was almost all that they asked me in my interview.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The resume was as per the norms of the placement cell of our institute.
I used only one resume for different companies, however I altered my “areas of interests” to align them with the profile on offer. For instance while applying for programming profiles I mentioned my areas of interest as C++ and data structures, whereas in core companies I mentioned my areas of interests as machining and power systems.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The company conducted a shortlisting process based on the resume. The requirement for an electrical engineering student to get shortlisted was a project in control systems and data structures. The company had also initially kept a CGPA cut-off of 7.0 but due to lesser number of applications they relaxed the CGPA requirement.

The next round was interview round. The interviewer was an electrical engineer himself. He was supposed to ask me core technical questions; however I told him that I was more inclined towards getting recruited for my strength in data structures. He asked me questions on data structures. He asked me to state the different sorting techniques that I was aware of. He also asked me general HR questions. He also asked me puzzles as well; in the puzzle he gave me a figure having 9 dots arranged in “3X3” matrix format and asked me to join them using minimum number of lines without lifting the pen.

The company shortlisted some candidates for the HR interview round, but I failed to qualify for that round.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Robert Bosch is a core company. I had very little idea about it and came to know about it through the pre placement talk only.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had mentioned my extra-curricular activities in my resume in a detailed and organised manner (all listed in a chronological order). Most of these were techno-managerial activities (organizational responsibilities in my tech fest). I had participated in an event called Robocon which added a new dimension to me resume.
I had done a project and a couple of internships during my four years of study – I mentioned the details of these in my resume. Although the resume that we submitted was in a standard format as per the norms of our placement cell, I referred to a website of Princeton University to prepare my resume. It’s a very good website and hugely referred by students for preparing their resume. I also got some valuable insights from my seniors for building my resume.
I laid stress on my achievements related to the technical field, because I wanted to land a job in my core field of study.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The personal interview round was the only interview round that was conducted. The shortlisting of candidates was done on the basis of the resume. I do not know the exact criteria for shortlisting but I feel they laid stress on sound technical knowledge or achievements in the field i.e. if a candidate was involved into some sort of electronics related activity or had done a good project. A total of 6 students were shortlisted from the mechanical department.

There were two simultaneous panels and candidates could be sent to either of the two. My interview started with some basic H.R. (Human Resource) questions and then the interviewer dived straight into the technical questions. The technical questions were mainly electronics and robotics based. He asked me about Robocon event that I had participated in. I gave a brief account of the event and the robot that we created. He asked me to draw block diagrams and the circuit diagram of certain device and to explain the circuitry in detail.

The interviewer then questioned me on motor drivers. He asked me to state the I.C.’s used in motor drivers. I could not answer this one. He asked me another electronics question where once again I floundered – I feel that by this time my chances of getting selected had diminished severely. Towards the end of the interview the interviewer communicated the same to me clearly.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Robert Bosch is a very reputed company. It came to our campus with a profile for electrical and electronics guys. The areas in which it has operations can easily be known by visiting the company website or its Wikipedia page.
