Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms, however I did change the “Area of interest” section of the resume as per the job profile being offered by the company.
Students were shortlisted based on the resume and were called directly for the interview round.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Hatch Associates directly had an interview round after short listing the students based on their resume. 12 students were shortlisted for this round (6 from Civil Engineering and 6 from Chemical Engineering). All the students had 2 interviews – one technical interview and one HR interview.

In the technical interview, I was asked about my two final year projects. The interviewer also asked me about my internship – what was my role and what did I get to learn.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In the HR interview, they asked me some general HR questions. Finally 2 students got selected for this company – one from Civil Engineering and one from Chemical Engineering.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I attended the company’s pre-placement talk and also went through the company’s website.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There were two rounds of written test.
Round 1: 5 minute test based on mathematical calculations
Round 2: 30 minute test based quantitative ability and data Interpretation skills
Their sole purpose was to know whether you are capable of handling mathematical calculations easily and quickly. You just need to practice lots of multiplication, division and other simple stuff so that you become quick during the test.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The HR interview was a very different experience for me. I felt that they were looking for a guy who would fit best in their culture and has the ability not only to take risks but also assess it and mitigate it.

Some of the HR questions that were asked to were:-

Choose between Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose. I personally, would advise you to go for Mahatma Gandhi. If you go for Bose, they will reject you saying that you have a violent side to your personality which of course is not good for them.
What would you do if you were given 1 lakh and were told to jump off the first floor? 5 lakh for the 2nd floor? 10 for the 3rd floor?
Assess the risk in every situation and then using your reasoning, give the answer. I answered that for the amount of money involved i would jump off the 1st and 2nd floors but not the 3rd floor. At maximum I would break my bones or suffer a few fractures which is good enough for the money.

I give you 5 lakhs right now. Go and kiss the girl standing outside. Will you take the risk?
I said yes I will. She will slap me on the face or maybe get a complaint registered against me with the Dean. It will be a fair deal for the money involved.

Calculate 1292 within 15 seconds (without the pen of course).
657*53 within 15 seconds (again without the pen).
The interviewer asked me the length of the room. I said that it was around 18 feet. He asked me to convince him of the same.
I said, "Sir, my height is about 6 feet. So if I lie down 3 times along the length that should be enough reason for you to get convinced”. So I lied down on the floor along the length of the room thrice.

Besides this they also asked me some HR questions like why should we hire you, what are your goals and why are you suitable for the company. There were few other HR questions as well which were not so different form the regular ones.

Overall it was a very good interview experience. They were looking for people who can take risks and were not hesitant to take an initiative and then back their decision with sound thought process.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The company’s selection process was open for all candidates who had joined the institute through JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). They conducted a written test which was purely based on testing one’s ability to do quick calculation and proficiency in analytical skills. The test had around 30 questions which were to be solved in thirty minutes. Thereafter the selected candidates where asked to go through another round of written test with a higher level of difficulty. The questions could be answered easily if you have had sufficient practice of mathematics.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: After the written test there were two sets of personal interview taken by two different panels. They were checking my personality and my ability to fit into their team. They asked me about my extra-curricular activities and how it has shaped my thought process and my personality. They were really particular about one question which they asked from all the candidates – ‘Why do you think you are more suitable for the company than other candidates?’ They also asked me few generic HR questions about me, my strengths and weaknesses etc.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There was no shortlisting as such on the basis of resume. Everyone was allowed to sit for 1st round which was a written test. In this round we were supposed to solve 30 questions of calculation in 5 minutes. I think those who managed to solve above 20 were shortlisted for next round which was an aptitude test.

There were 30 questions in 30 minutes. Aptitude portion was a bit tougher than all the previous tests of other companies. The questions were numerical calculations and quantitative aptitude. I could solve 22 questions only. People who managed to solve above 15 were shortlisted. 35 people were shortlisted after this round.
Duration: 5 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: HR Interview
Experience: After the written test I went through two rounds of interview. The questions were not company specific but were very generic. They wanted to explore the personality of the candidate. The questions asked included:

Questions about my strength and weaknesses
Ability to handle pressure and crisis situations
Examples where I have worked in a team and had shown leadership skills

As I had a good CGPA they grilled me a lot by saying that I was not suited for the company and asked me to justify my stand and why I felt I would be suitable for the company.
Overall I believe that if a candidate wants to get into the company he should be able to justify why he wants to be a part of the company. Also he should be able to quote examples of teamwork and leadership.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms. I only changed my “Area of Interest” section according to the company.

Round: Test
Experience: First round was an online test of 45 minutes having some 50 questions based on mental ability and abstract reading. They were different from other companies. Questions were of a bit higher difficulty than otherwise. Preparation for CAT exam was very helpful for this round. From around 200 people around 35 people were selected for the next round.
Duration: 45 minutes
Total Questions: 50

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Panel was neither bothered about the resume nor my internship experience. I had interest in finance so I tried to divert the interview in that direction but the interviewer was not concerned with my interest. Rather they preferred to ask random questions like:
What would be an alternative of paper? He would counter question you on the answers that you give. I said electronic form but he said such technology has been developed.
About cellular processes from biology.
I had interest in books and specifically history/mythology related books. So he asked me about few immortal characters from mythology and asked me which character I would like to be immortal as and how would you accomplish such a task. And also if I could make one immortal if not why?
Finally they selected around 8-9 students.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: Most of the information regarding the company was obtained by attending the Pre Placement Talk. I had no prior information about the company.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had a standard resume for this company as per our institute placement cell norms.
I had put in a lot of emphasis on my extra-curricular activities while preparing my resume since my CGPA was less. While applying for the core companies I also mentioned about the projects that I had completed in the past few years. The main difference in my resume for different companies was related to the “Areas of Interest” and the subjects studied.

Round: Test
Experience: Even when I was preparing for CAT I always knew that my preparation for this exam would always help me with the aptitude tests that companies conduct as part of their recruitment process. And it was the case with most of the aptitude tests I gave during the placement season.
The written test consisted of some tricky mathematical puzzles. One of them that I remember was to find the minimum number of people required to detect the bottle containing the poison out of the 1000 given bottles. The test comprised of 50 such mathematical questions/puzzles and the time allotted was only 30 minutes. They also had aptitude based questions. Around 180 to 200 students appeared for the first round. The company short-listed only 24 candidates for the next round.
Tips: Preparation of puzzles for this company would be helpful.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The second round was the interview round. The interview was divided into 2 parts. The first part was a mathematics quiz and the second was an aptitude quiz. They gave us the question set and asked us to solve them. There was no specific time allotted. We had to solve those questions and give it back to them. The questions were easy aptitude based questions. If there were some questions that we could not solve we were asked to state the approach that we adopted to solve those questions. After reviewing the paper, they started asking me some mathematical puzzles. There was one other question, I don’t remember the data exactly but it was related to a man and his movements along a downward going escalator. The man started moving up the escalator with a certain speed relative to the ground and then while coming down his speed increased by a certain given factor, I was asked to state the absolute speed of the man.
Then the interviewers moved on to the HR questions. They inquired about my internships that I did in my past years and asked me to share the experience that I had in each of them. I had done 2 internships which I told them about. They next asked me draw comparison between the two and state which I felt was the better of the two and why.
The company finally recruited 12 students.

General Tips: I would advise students to have a brief overview of few commonly asked puzzles in interviews. Preparation for aptitude tests before hand would be very helpful.
College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: I acquired the knowledge about the profile during the pre-placement talk. Also since the company had come last year as well and recruited one of my seniors from my department, I garnered some knowledge about the profile and the company from him.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: While applying in Valyoo I neither carried my resume nor my certificates. I went for the interviews empty handed but since I had some past experience of working in this sector I was pretty confident.

Round: Test
Experience: Since I wanted to get into a software company I focused more on C++ and data structures. For the aptitude section I studied some data interpretation problems and the likes.
Tips: If you are interested in joining a software company you must good knowledge of C++ and data structures. Further if you are interested in joining some firm as a software developer you must have good knowledge about OS and Application Development.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: For the GDs I did not prepare beforehand. Most of the GD that I participated in during the recruitment season eventually culminated into a fish market like scenario and hence even I did not put a lot of efforts in those GD’s.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Much of my interview in Valyoo was based on my past work experience which was mainly managing and marketing several portals.
The interviewer asked me some questions based on marketing. He presented some situations and asked me to suggest some strategies to tackle those situations.
Tips: Just believe in yourself. Concentrate on your strengths and minimize your weaknesses in the discussions.
Also make sure that you know which profile you want to apply to. Initially I wanted to join a software company, but during the placement season I changed my mind and applied in trading companies and finally at the end I realized that my true interest lie in online marketing. Luckily this realization happened before the end of placement season.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: The company had come to campus to recruit for two profiles, software development and program management. However, I was interested in online marketing and was also aware about the work done by the company in this sector. I went over to the company officials and told them about my interests. They suggested that I apply for this profile off campus and so I did.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The interview has a lot of questions asked on the basis of the resume; hence you have to be fully aware of the stuff you have written in your resume. Also in front of the interview panel you have to prove what you are saying by constantly giving examples from your resume.

Round: Test
Experience: The aptitude tests are similar to the CAT exam and one who has prepared for CAT should not have a lot of problems solving these questions.
The first round was the written test of one hour duration. The questions in the test were based on speed, distance, time, percentage and so on. There were few questions on vocabulary too. There was one question on C++ as well. I did not remember anything about coding, hence I mentioned it in the paper that I had done a course of C++ in the first year but did not remember much about it. Nearly 200 people had appeared for the written test out of which 18 got selected for the next round.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I had been part of groups in the campus during the past four years which were actively involved in organizing some GDs from time to time. Hence I did not have a lot of problems during the GDs. I was quite confident about my speaking abilities. However during the placement season I read some newspapers to keep abreast with the latest happenings.
The second round was the GD round. The 18 candidates selected to this round were divided into 3 groups of 6 each. From the 3 groups the company selected 1 candidate from the first group, no candidates from the second group and 5 candidates from my group which was the third group. Later on the supervisor told us about the reason for this imbalance in selection; he said that the GD of the second group which initially began peacefully eventually culminated into a fish market thus there was no productive discussion whatsoever. On the other hand in the GD of the third group there was a peaceful and productive discussion all throughout the GD, everybody gave a peaceful listening to what the others had to say and also everyone spoke politely. The topic of the GD was ‘Should the number of IIT’s be increased.
Tips: You have to be confident during the GD and also maintain eye contact with everyone. It is also essential that you put in some intellectual inputs in the discussion. Speak in a cool, confident and convincing manner.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There are some questions which are quite frequently asked in interviews. I collected many such questions from the internet and prepared sample answers keeping in mind what reply the interviewer expects for such questions. The questions asked in the interview were based on my resume. The interviewer only asked some HR questions and no technical questions. During the interview the interviewer asked me the reason for this switch from the civil engineering to operations management considering the fact that I had a good civil engineering internships and projects in civil engine that could have got me a job in the core sector quite easily. I replied saying that even I am aware that securing a job in a core company would not be a tedious job for me, but over and above these projects and internships there are certain things mentioned in the resume like my extra-curricular activities which do indeed prove my abilities and interests in fields distinct from the civil engineering and I would like to try my hands in it.
Tips: It is necessary to practice the HR questions beforehand. You must prepare answers to the HR questions yourself and get them edited. You must also be clear about the kind of work of work you did in your internships because that reflects your practical experience.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: The company is in its start-up phase. We attended the PPT organized by the company. During the PPT we realized the complexity of the job. It was quite clear the person appointed to this profile would have to face all the problems and challenges in a start-up; that is what got me interested in this job.
