Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Normal selection via resume for Test. Being a Mathematics student, my resume was a bit "academic".
Tips: Be thorough with your resume. I had a more "academic" resume. So was asked at 95% of the interviews "Why are you here, you should go for PhD". High CPI is not required for job, but a respectable one is required.

Round: Test
Experience: This test was mainly to check your linux skills, as the Job profile required a skilled linux guy with scripting ability. It had 2 sections, one was with normal questions and one with slightly difficult. It had questions about flags in different shell commands.
Tips: Be good with linux. I am Ubuntu user, so I was good with shell and scripting. If you are a windows user, I would highly recommend to install cygwin and practice linux scripting.
Duration: 60mins minutes
Total Questions: 50

Round: Test
Experience: Speed Math was easy for me, but was stuck with few apti questions. Practice them. Cannot say anything about personality test. Just be yourself.
Tips: Speed math requires practice. You can practice at traderstest.org. Medium to easy level will be sufficient.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Interviewer was fun. At the end we were discussing which beer brand is the best. (He was from UK)
Tips: Brush up your network security and linux skills. This profile requires Network security. There were few other questions which I cannot remember.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: He was fun, he made me real comfy and I was able to think clearly while answering. He was laughing when I was answering how to root server. He said he wasn't expecting a math student to answer this question. I also told about my experience in online CTF and that I am a metasploit fan.
Tips: Interest in network security is a plus.

Skill Tips: Interest in network security and constant learning
Skills: Common Sense, Network Security, GNU/LINUX
College Name: IIT Bombay
Motivation: Being a linux geek, and network security enthusiast, this was the perfect job I could think of.
Funny Moments: Interviewer : Irrespective of job profile, since we are mainly in 3 places, NY, Amsterdam and Singapore, where would you like to join.
Me : Amsterdam
Interviewer : Why ?
Me : Sir you know the reasons.

We both were laughing our ass off !!

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: My resume was not a stand out one. It was decent with internships in two startups and course projects in economics. People with a ok resume will make the cut.

Round: Test
Experience: IIT-JEE level questions on probability were asked. They were not very hard but little tricky. 17 objective questions with negative marks for wrong answers and 3 puzzles with no negative marks for wrong answers were asked. Calculators were also allowed.
Tips: Brush up on probability will help you answer all the 20 questions.
Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 20

Round: Stress Interview
Experience: My interview wasn't great at all. I thought I would never make the cut after the interview. A 6 member panel with 3 members bombarding me with questions and 3 members laughing at me for everything I say. Asked me about normal distributions that I had mentioned in my resume. I wasn't able to answer the questions properly on this part. They asked me to leave and I convinced them to give me some puzzles. The puzzles were very easy and may be this was the reason I got selected.
Tips: Prepare for the worst. If you have anything related to statistics in your resume be sure to learn about it very well. Command on probability will enhance your chances.

Skill Tips: Any 12th standard book on probability and statistics will do. Concentrate more on the probability part. Learning statics might give you an edge over other people.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

  • Q1. Multiple questions - Questions are mostly interviewer specific

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The questions in the objective section for Maths + Probability were comparatively easy. If you have prepared well for quant related topics, you can do well in this section.
As far as Data Structure section is concerned, it is necessary for you to score good in that part also, so do give equal importance to related study too. The third section, based on Data Science is generally very difficult, if seen from a non-CSE point of view. So, try scoring average in the algorithms, and really good in quant, to get through. One important point - all subjective papers are not considered. Consider objective as the first level of shortlisting, and then only people scoring well in objectives, are considered for subjective correction. So, performing well in objective is also necessary.
The subjective section is comparatively tough. Three questions were asked, each in the above mentioned three sections. Again, third section seemed very vague to me ( as I was unable to solve any question in it :P ). I did descent in the first section, and pretty well in the quant section to get shortlisted.
Tips: Rigorous study of quant stuff like Probability, and Combinatorics is very helpful. Questions are many a times Maths Olympiad level problems. So, practicing similar problems can be of great help. Do read concepts like Linear Algebra, Differential Equation, and other similar topics that are taught to us in our initial engineering years. It' necessary that you brush up these concepts, as questions might directly come based on finding the rank, solving some differential equation or conceptual application of eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Duration: 90 + 90 minutes
Total Questions: 30objective+9ubjective

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I don't exactly remembered the question, but I had my first three interviews, immediately, one after the other, although lasting for a total of 45-50 minutes together. The questions tested concepts related to Probability (distributions and normal random variables in specific), a few basic concepts based on stationary distribution, and basic Algorithms and coding, so that they can make sure that I have some basic knowledge of coding, not thorough though. I had answered almost all, though I had faultered a bit in the coding part, and the interviewer helped me to figure out, where I was going wrong.
Tips: Its good again, to be thorough with your quant section, as there will be nothing that will come out of the box. Although the questions will require you to think from the basics and use relevant concepts. Topics in Probability, such as conditional expectation are generally left out in basic probability courses and then not touched upon, so go through them in detail.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: An hour after the first three interviews, I had my fourth interview. I was asked a question based on probability, and a question based on Euclid's subtraction algorithm in this interview. I answered both, one with a bit of help though.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I was again tested on my conceptual understanding of probability and conditional expectations, and fluency in coding and algorithm related problems. I was able to answer all the questions I faced in this interview.
Tips: Same as before. Be sure to brush up your algorithms, and coding skills before the interview. (I was unable to solve the coding question in the first interview, only because I had forgotten, what traversals are :P). Go through the materials provided below, and stay confident in the interview. The people who sit on the other side of the table, are just like us, previous year IIT graduates, and they will never make you feel uncomfortable. As a result, I'd suggest not to feel uncomfortable at all, and be confident over whatever you have studied. They emphasize majorly on concepts and tech-related part. One last thing - Be thorough with your resume, almost every interviewer asked me questions related to my resume, and I answered them with ease, as I had prepared really well for the resume.

General Tips: I would just say, that this is one of the companies, where it is not necessary for you to be a very high pointer to get in. Study well and perform well in the test, your resume does not matter much after that. You just have to go in the interview and stay consistent. The interviewers too, are very friendly and helpful, they are just IIT Alums only, and help you out really well with problems, if you get stuck in the interviews. So, just be strong with your concepts and problem solving skills. Do see questions like those mentioned on the cseblog, specially the ones under the head, probability. They were really helpful in developing a few concepts.

Just be confident with your preparation, and trust yourself to the core. Self-belief and perseverance, were I guess, my key points to success.

Skill Tips: Its good if you start going through the materials for the above topics, well in advance.
Skills: Probability Concepts, Algorithms And Data Structures, Quant+Math
College Name: IIT Bombay
Motivation: Goldman Sachs is one of the best in the business, in its field. Since I always wanted to do something related to Maths in my life, except research, I decided to choose finance as the further career option. The best in the business seemed firms like Goldman Sachs, and WorldQuant, but CPI cutoff for WorldQuant was way above my CPI. So, Goldman Sachs seemed the last and the most suited option. (This was not my HR answer, please. A genuine 8-pointer answer it is :P )
Funny Moments: There were many:
(a) I was very depressed late in the evening, and I was almost certain that I haven't been selected. I was so frustrated after this, that I had told my mom dad that I have not made it through, and I was all set to leave the interview venue. I had almost entered the lift, when I found that my name was being called out there by the company officials. I was selected! :)

(b) I was so happy, listening to the news of my selection, that I did not listen for the next 2 minutes, what the person in front of me was telling me. He then asked me something in reply, and I was like, can you please repeat ? :P

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The test basically involved solving 15 Data interpretation questions. The test was pretty easy, and hence accuracy was very important to qualify for the next round.
Tips: Solving DI questions from any CAT practice book will be more than enough. The actual questions in the test are much easier. Just be read the question carefully and you will be able to solve it.
Total Questions: 15

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Initially the interviewer tests your basically conceptual knowledge regarding the cost and revenue streams for a loan and then expects you to calculate the average profit given the required data. This was a pretty small interview lasting only about 10-12 minutes or so.
Tips: Keep conversing with the interviewer and clarify any doubts. Do not mess up with the calculation.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Again, the interviewer tests your basic understanding regarding making a decision to select between two marketing schemes. Then, after being provided relevant information, you are expected to make an informed decision, do the break-even analysis and plot a graph.
Tips: You need to show the interviewer your grasp of business concepts. A good knowledge about economics and a business acumen helps. The math is easy, just be careful not to mess it up. Also, keep conversing with the interviewer and help him understand your line of thinking, this would enable him to assist you and get you on the right path.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: You are expected to do the math to assess the profitability of an ATM and qualitatively discuss the factors to be considered while setting up a new ATM.
Tips: Again, think aloud and use your common sense if ever you feel that you do not know an answer. But mainly be confident.

Round: Behavioural Interview
Experience: The interviewer is very friendly and it is more of a chat than an interview. Also, they will get into the specifics of the example you provide just to understand the situation better and to know how you handled the situation.
Tips: Be well prepared with all the general HR and behavioral questions and think about specific examples that you would like to bring up.

General Tips: To sum it up, more than anything, just be confident.
Skill Tips: If you are selected for the interview, chances are that you already have the necessary math skills to succeed. Remember, the only things which are going to get you through are confidence, alertness and business acumen.

Experience: I think having some good spikes like Big PORs, Intern in well known brands, startups. and consitency in CPI would help you get shortlisted. I was a 8 pointer with a couple of Institute Awards.
Regular tips like making a neat resume etc apply

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: It started with tell me about yourself. Then they asked questions on my resume projects to check how well I was able to explain it and if I had not exagerrated in my resume. Finally a guesstimate.

The guesstimate involved calculating the no. of beer bottles sold in Mumbai on a weekend? They told me that I should not calculate, explanation should suffice. The interviews were very friendly and did not put any stress.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Again the interviewer was very friendly. The HR started with Tell me about yourself. We then had a conversation on our hobbies, he was keen to check how passionate I am about my hobbies. Then he asked Why consultancy? Finally he asked me if I had any question for him.(Never say no, and ask a relevant question).

General Tips: Dont lie in your resume
Be happy during the interview! Smile!

Interview Questions

  • Q1. A short quantitative case on the profitability of a bank
  • Q2. Long quantitative case based on the economics of a breakfast chain with falling sales
  • Q3. Analysis of the profitability of credit card companies

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Capital one usually conducts a data interpretation test to shortlist students for interviews.
This test also has some weightage in the final selections as it is a metric to judge your
speed and accuracy of calculations. There are 30 questions in 35 minutes so the strategy to crack
it is not to get stuck on confusing questions and maintain a good speed/accuracy balance.
50 students were shortlisted for interviews from among 160 who gave the test and the
cutoff must have been around 22 or 23 out of 30.
Tips: CAT questions help.
Know a bit about inflation.
Duration: 35 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I was asked about a bank which borrows at 6% and lends at 10% to one class
of debtors and 20% to a riskier class. I had to determine the profitability of the
bank given a common dollar loss rate and average loan size. This was an easier
case and involved basic common sense to get to the final answer.
Tips: -Don't make errors in calculations
-Keep on communicating with the interviewer even if you get stuck.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I was first asked which factors might have led to the falling sales, for
which I gave around 6-7 possible reasons.
Then he gave me a lot of data about the breakfast chain and two possible
decisions the breakfast chain could make. I had to determine the viability
by analyzing the data given.
Tips: -Again be accurate in your calculations. Even a small mistake can lead to a wrong final conclusion.
-Imagine the company given and all possible sources it can derive revenues from.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I was introduced to the concept of transactors and revolvers
and given some basic information about their spending habit.
This was followed with an analysis of the profits to the credit card
company due to these two classes of credit card holders.
It is a bit confusing if you don't know how exactly credit card companies
earn money and what the cost of funds are for transactors.
Tips: -Know the terms used by credit card companies like interchange rate, cost of funds, dollar loss rate before your Capital One interview. Also know the sources of revenue of credit card companies.

Round: Test
Experience: It was a round which involved 80 questions such as  (3+17*5)/11 = ?Four Options were given (one answer correct)The extraordinary part of this test was that it involved negative marks for a wrong answer as well as a skipped answer. That means one has to sequentially answer questions!

Duration: 120 minutes
Total Questions: 6

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: It was fun! I had practised a few mock interviews and this went like a breeze.
Tips: Do get a good enough feel of trading and try practising trading on a deck of cards.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This was an ultimate stress interview. A lot of questions were two-faced : having us to choose between two correct answers. They look at the way a trader would answer the questions.
Tips: Shout out loudly! Yeah, sometimes they check your voice strength. And relax. They will get to your inner predicament eventually. Also, practise the basic HR questions : Why optiver? What are qualities of trader? What does Optiver trade? Some strengths and weaknesses, etc. etc.

General Tips: Just take it easy. You would do best if you are cool :)
