4 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

  • Q1. A short quantitative case on the profitability of a bank
  • Q2. Long quantitative case based on the economics of a breakfast chain with falling sales
  • Q3. Analysis of the profitability of credit card companies

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Capital one usually conducts a data interpretation test to shortlist students for interviews.
This test also has some weightage in the final selections as it is a metric to judge your
speed and accuracy of calculations. There are 30 questions in 35 minutes so the strategy to crack
it is not to get stuck on confusing questions and maintain a good speed/accuracy balance.
50 students were shortlisted for interviews from among 160 who gave the test and the
cutoff must have been around 22 or 23 out of 30.
Tips: CAT questions help.
Know a bit about inflation.
Duration: 35 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I was asked about a bank which borrows at 6% and lends at 10% to one class
of debtors and 20% to a riskier class. I had to determine the profitability of the
bank given a common dollar loss rate and average loan size. This was an easier
case and involved basic common sense to get to the final answer.
Tips: -Don't make errors in calculations
-Keep on communicating with the interviewer even if you get stuck.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I was first asked which factors might have led to the falling sales, for
which I gave around 6-7 possible reasons.
Then he gave me a lot of data about the breakfast chain and two possible
decisions the breakfast chain could make. I had to determine the viability
by analyzing the data given.
Tips: -Again be accurate in your calculations. Even a small mistake can lead to a wrong final conclusion.
-Imagine the company given and all possible sources it can derive revenues from.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I was introduced to the concept of transactors and revolvers
and given some basic information about their spending habit.
This was followed with an analysis of the profits to the credit card
company due to these two classes of credit card holders.
It is a bit confusing if you don't know how exactly credit card companies
earn money and what the cost of funds are for transactors.
Tips: -Know the terms used by credit card companies like interchange rate, cost of funds, dollar loss rate before your Capital One interview. Also know the sources of revenue of credit card companies.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

  • Q1. The card question : They go on for various rounds asking us to trade on expected values on a deck of cards
  • Q2. Stress Interview!

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: It was a round which involved 80 questions such as  (3+17*5)/11 = ?Four Options were given (one answer correct)The extraordinary part of this test was that it involved negative marks for a wrong answer as well as a skipped answer. That means one has to sequentially answer questions!
Tips: Practise on tradertest.org.Even if you do 50 questions here, you will get through the optiver test.Learn to progress without rechecking :D
Duration: 8 minutes
Total Questions: 80

Round: Test
Experience: The cutoff was 24/26 correct patterns! It was damn competitive!
Tips: Just have a knack of solving patterns. They are available on tradertest.org.
Duration: 30 minutes
Total Questions: 26

Round: Test
Experience: This was a round wherein I seriously felt that I would not get through. I had got 2 definitely right, and other 3 almost 1/2 right. I guess the cutoff was 3/6. Questions involved probability and logic puzzles.
Tips: Just keep on practising logic puzzles. And also brush up on probability. Especially on expected values!
Duration: 120 minutes
Total Questions: 6

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: It was fun! I had practised a few mock interviews and this went like a breeze.
Tips: Do get a good enough feel of trading and try practising trading on a deck of cards.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This was an ultimate stress interview. A lot of questions were two-faced : having us to choose between two correct answers. They look at the way a trader would answer the questions.
Tips: Shout out loudly! Yeah, sometimes they check your voice strength. And relax. They will get to your inner predicament eventually. Also, practise the basic HR questions : Why optiver? What are qualities of trader? What does Optiver trade? Some strengths and weaknesses, etc. etc.

General Tips: Just take it easy. You would do best if you are cool :)
Skill Tips: I googled for logic puzzles and prepared almost all I could get my hands on.
Skills: Speed, Memory, Logic
College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Motivation: I simply loved the grace of the company! And took to liking trading imensely. Also, I felt that I had the skillset in me to become a good trader.
Funny Moments: I forgot what optiver trades. It was a LOL moment indeed!

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Even if we were to search around the world, it would be a truly difficult job to find someone like Deepali. As a Computer Science Graduate of IIT Bombay, she successfully bagged a job offer from an astounding company – Facebook. Even though it’s a rare feat, she doesn’t consider it a rare one. We at TopTalent.in got a chance to interact with Deepali Adlakha from IIT Bombay about what made this possible and what others can learn from this.In case you are wondering how the resume of a Facebook recruit looks like, you can download the resume by logging in.

QUES: How do you feel on achieving this rare feat?ANS: I don’t consider it as a ‘rare’ feat, many people have got such good offers in both present and past.QUES : What other offers did you get apart from Facebook?ANS: Facebook was one among my top preferences, I got the offer from Facebook and hence I was out of the placement process. So, one does not get more than one offer.

QUES : Can you brief us the interview process?ANS: Facebook had one coding test, after which there were three rounds of interview. All the interviews tested your technical knowledge.

QUES : Can you give us a brief account of what you felt was the toughest interview?ANS : I gave interviews to Facebook, Google and Microsoft. In all interviews, the student is tested on his/her thought process, how he/she arrives at the answer rather than just the answer.

QUES : What was your preparation strategy?ANS : I practised coding, answering algorithmic design questions. I had a rough overview of all my courses, hence I didn’t spend much time revising them.

QUES : What kind of skills do you think helped you getting this job?ANS: A student should know how to code, both on paper and on the system, that is it.

QUES : What resources did you consult? Where did you practice problems from?ANS: I used Hackerrank and Codechef for practicing problems.

QUES : Were grades a factor in you getting selected?ANS: Good grades is definitely a plus point, but it is neither necessary nor sufficient.

QUES : What’s your advice to students who are aiming for similar placement offers as yours?
Tips: Relax and prepare hard.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Tips: A Good Resume is the one with a clear message in one glance. One usually doesn'thave much time go through the specifics. Also, most of the resumes look more orless the same if you start reading thoroughly. So what distinguishes you is howmuch you can convey to a third person in one glance. However a crucial pointthat one needs to keep in mind is - The third person may be an IITian or may benot. So your resume needs to be optimally elaborate and detailed. Good atglance and not boring with details.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I sat for only one GD that was for ITC. I did not prepare at all for it andrelied mostly on my speaking cum shouting skills that I developed over theyears, thanks to my fundae sessions and most importantly TAship sessions. Ienjoyed the GD which was a problem statement on a guy's death with a briefdescription of the circumstances, and was asked to discuss who was guilty forthe guy's death. I enjoyed the discussion, and found the problem pretty exciting, but only to find out later that it was a routine problem for GDs.
Tips: My agenda was simple for the GD - I took it as yet another discussion session.Hearing others opinions and pointing out mine. Occasionally I also asked thequite ones to share their views. There are often several tricks that seniorstell the juniors - start early, take the lead, try to summarize, take everyonealong etc etc. I like to put it this way - Don't speak non-sense, do speak somesense, let others speak, try to distinguish the sense and the non-sense fromothers views, and encourage the quite ones to speak a bit in order to have asensible and wholesome group discussion. If you think you can lead, then lead.If you think you might want others opinions to kick start your thought process, then wait for some points from others. So basically do what seems sensible to you, but do something!

Round: HR Interview
Tips: Before I forget, usually at the end of interviews, the interviewers ask you if you have some questions about them, be prepared with some questions which can be like - what do you usually look for in a good candidate, what is the work culture at the company, the career path of the individual in the company or otherwise etc etc. You can google things, or you can be innovative. Innovationmight pay off very well or it may just kill your chances. But that's life -more risk, more reward.Andanother point, some of your interviews might be telephonic - in such cases, many more factors come into picture which might spoil the mood of theinterview ( I would let you to think about the possible glitches that you mighthave because of this technological advancement). But as usual, I would advice you to keep calm and just give your best.

General Tips: There are many things that I would like to convey to the students regarding the placement process. On the preparation side, one must give his best - visitwebsites, read blogs, attend presentations and various related sessions, ask seniorswho have been placed, talk to anyone who you think can provide some help. Thesepractices will give you enormous data - and your job is to filter and use it wisely,at your own discretion. Read relevant material from books and internet, practice problems and tests, do mock interviews and GDs with your friends, prepare your resume well - in short – do what is to be done. Depending on jobprofiles that you target, the preparation keeps varying, askaround and workhard. With that beingsaid, I would like to say that placement is not simply about merit -independent ofwhether you appreciate this fact or not. Various companies valuecompatibility over the merit of thestudent (which is quite logical thingto do!) and sometimes you may under-qualify and sometimesover-qualify on thosestandards - and rarely will you be just at an optimal level. Consequently, manyresults(in fact most, to be even more precise all except one) will not goin your favour - either accept them or challenge them (if you think you havebeendenied of something that you truly deserve) but never lose your heart- this is simply a welcomesong to the real world. In the long run, thisshort and (most likely a difficult and) tough experiencewill prove to beone of the most memorable and a great learning experience. In a nut shell"Keep Calm and Give your Best! - Karm karte raho, fal ki chinta mat karo."
