Round: HR Interview
Experience: My Answers(in question order):
1. A country’s development is mainly based on the kind of infrastructure it has; and the strength of the infrastructure depends on the strength and quality of metals used in it; strength and quality of the metal is decided by the quality of metallurgist and material engineers in the country. So I am quite motivated towards becoming a leading metallurgical engineer in Steel industry.
2. ArcelorMittal
3. For ArcelorMittal we need work experience and it prefers PhD people. I want to start my career with JSPL, because gave some statistics/data of the key achievements of JSPL, praised the company.
4. These kinds of questions are very frequently asked in any of the Steel Company’s HR interview. So, mug up some statistics.

Panel was of Uma Shankar Dalai and Chandan Kalra.
Tips: Visit the website of JSPL before sitting for the interview. They can ask you to enlist some of the plants of JSPL, or some current news of JSPL

Round: Other Interview
Experience: (Uma Shankar Dalai)1. Questions were regarding the Internships. Since my internship was in RINL (Vizag Steel Plant), he was very keenly asking me questions on it and I had to be very careful in answering them, because he was the ace in that field. ))
2. Some questions on blast furnace like “what is Hot top pressure, why it is important, slag metal basicity”, important inclusions in steel and the way they are removed, conditions for P and S removal, effect of alloying addition of various elements to Steel.
3. Phase diagram of iron, composition of stainless steel, various heat treatment methods

(Chandan Kalra)
First few questions were based on the internship and the projects mentioned in the resume. Then he asked questions related to blast furnace and steel making. For example:
1. What would be the consequences of closing the top of the blast furnace?
2. How would you increase the efficiency and output of the blast furnace?
3. Explain in detail the steel making process.
I was also asked to draw a schematic of the blast furnace with proper labeling.

General Tips: 1. The book Callister’s Materials science and engineering is must for all, because it can revise your concepts in very less time and touches every part of the material science.
2. Issue some books of iron and steel-making from the library, thoroughly read the technicalities of blast furnace and LD converter. Read about the various heat treatment procedures from a good book. You can find many such books in the library (3rd floor near the fountain side)

3. Just thinking good is not necessary. You can't wear green slippers and imagine that the whole world will turn green. Actions speak louder and hence are necessary.
Tips: It us of very high possibility that your GD will turn into a fish market. All you have to do is stay calm, raise your voice in a polite manner to make everyone silent and then put forward your point.
Speaking the point won't do good unless the judge listens to it. Speak for the judge.
Utilize the points the company speaks about itself in their PPT. It adds to your caliber.

Be thorough in your industrial projects and subjects related to it.
Justify yourself properly about whatever you speak. Rather, speak only those things which you know you can justify.
Be confident in your answers.
Avoid using complicated terms.

General Tips: It won't happen every time that the selection process goes the way you want to take it to. You may not get selected but keep working harder and harder until you achieve what you want. Don't stop believing in yourself.
Skill Tips: Be updated with the current affairs. Reading regular newspapers will definitely help.
Do attend GDs regularly. Practice will make you better every time.
