Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The aptitude test was pretty easy and contained common mathematical and puzzle type questions. The main aim of this round was to warm up the candidates for the technical round. The test duration was 30 minutes and the test had 30 questions.
Tips: A little practice of aptitude questions from any standard book would be enough.
Duration: 30 minutes

Round: Test
Experience: This section was a bit difficult as it was meant to sieve students who had the bare minimum technical knowledge required by the recruiters. The questions were all basic and were all theoretical. If the student has studied thoroughly all his course work then this test would be a piece of cake for him/her.
Tips: Be regular with your technical studies.
Duration: 30 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I maintained a calm and enthusiastic aura and answered all the questions put in front of me. I must consider myself lucky to have answered all the questions based on the research project which did at BARC, Mumbai.
Tips: The atmosphere depends on how you manage to tackle the questions asked
by the interviewers. Stay calm and maintain an enthusiastic aura. Be bold with confident answers and try to lighten up the mood of the interviewers.

General Tips: Smart study is the mantra and not donkey work.
Skills: Confidence, Technical knowledge, enthusiasm
College Name: National Institute of Technology, Rourkela
Motivation: It is a part of a very large group which allows cross-industry exposure to its trainees and gives them the liberty to join any one of the industries after the training is complete.
Funny Moments: The time gap between the interview and the written round was about 8 hours and I had not slept the previous night due to the traveling. I was at my breaking point and was about the give up when the interviewer called me in.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: I never felt very confident about the technical questions of the written round. But the assuring fact was no one did. And usually cut off of the technical section comes to are relatively lower mark which is achievable. So I focused more on the quantitative sections which this time bore 2/3rd of the total marks in the written test. Out of 30 technical questions you should be able to do at least 10.
Tips: But one important round after written test, the “psychometric test” that is oftencalled a non-eliminative round, is actually a silent killer I felt. Psychometric test assertsthe personality of a student. And in my interview panel one panellist was speciallydedicated for this. He would not ask you any question but silently judge you throughoutthe interview and compare your behaviour with your psychometric test results. If theyfind the test results mismatching with how you portray yourself during the interview theywould simply dis-select you. So it is important to appear this seemingly unimportant and boring test very sincerely and honestly.
Duration: 60+30 minutes
Total Questions: 60+30

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Almost all who appeared the written test were short listed for the GD round. Clarity of points, ability to direct the group, and fluency - these wee the key to clear the GD. Out of 10 people, 3 got shortlisted.
Tips: In a small group, I along with few other friends of mine, were practicing GD in the hostel. We practiced in several hypothetical situations by virtually creating them in my room, for example speaking against your natural inclination towards speaking in favour of a topic or taking the job of moderating the GD trying to point out the flaws of the rest of the group in the end or making a shy person initiate the GD. And those sessions really helped us. In fact another friend who was also a part of our GD group, got placed in Hero MotoCorp as well.
Duration: 10 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Actually it was more of a combined Technical + HR interview. Interview mostly based on my internship experience. Literally they went on to ask about every tiny detail about my summer training experience at Maruti Suzuki. It included HR questions like how one should handle the workers, work schedule management, following of company ethics, deadline management etc. So take your internship very very seriously from day 1. IC engine is also an essential study for Hero MotoCorp. Since they ask you to bring your CV to the interview, one must spend some good time preparing his/her CV.
Tips: Try to relate your co-curricular activities and involvement with the HR questions asked. Be honest, frank and confident. Contact students from other colleges who already got placed in the same company in the recent past and know about their interview experience. That comes handy at times.

General Tips: My strongest points for the interview were my internship experiences at Maruti Suzuki, Gurgaon and Ingersoll Rand, Ahmedabad in 2nd and 3rd year summers respectively. I had used my training period in the best possible way to understand the technical as well as non-technical aspects of the functioning of their production segment. And to my surprise, the interviewers even went on asking questions like the practicalities of human resource management that I experienced during my training. Apart from that I ensured that I was thorough with at least two of core subjects, a sound knowledge of automobile engineering. For the HR interview I had prepared many typical HR questions with answers much prior to any interview I had faced.
Skill Tips: Apart from your technical skills and mathematical ability to clear the written round, all the above are also highly essential to clear the further rounds. And yes, your attentiveness in the pre-placement talk is also being taken into account. They ask some general questions in the end of the talk and try to answer one of them. It creates a good impression. Read a lot about the company; its history, its latest models, its inception, technologies it uses, founders etc.
Skills: English Fluency, Communication skills, Body Language, Expressiveness, Leadership quality, Psychometric Test
College Name: NIT Rourkela
Motivation: I would say, “Never do a training just for a certificate.” Take your internships very seriously. Learn as much as possible. What technical project you do during the training is important, of course. But what you learn and gain during that period has got its own significance. Don’t waste any summer. Do not let your CGPA fall below 7.5 under any circumstances. And from behavioral point of view, your body language, speaking ability, expressions are all very important. Prepare for them from now on. If you find excuses, as why a mechanical core company looks for these soft skills, just know that someone who does not will get that job. Make group discussions a habit. Stay updated with the current affairs. Read newspaper every day at least for 10-15 minutes and make notes of them. Make yourself employable from the targeted company’s perspective. Preparation needs smart studies. One just can’t go on reading every page of a book. And knowing exactly which areas to emphasize on, for which company, is a real challenge. And your perseverance will be your source of confidence during the interview. You have to deserve it.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The company directly shortlisted the top 10 students from our class for the interview round.
Tips: Try to maintain a decent CGPA. It is important.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I had a good technical interview. I was able to answer most of the questions. There were also a few questions I did not know the answers to and I told them that. They asked me to draw and explain a stress-strain curves and also write the steelmaking reactions. There was also a discussion on my summer internship project and my final year project, which I explained properly. They enquired about our department facilities and lab courses.
Tips: PI rounds can be very unpredictable and one can never be too prepared.

For technical interviews, prepare at least 2 subjects thoroughly. Make sure that these subjects concern the company for which you appearing. Never bluff! If you do not know an answer; you can politely say that you don’t. Do not be nervous; the questions are usually very fundamental.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The HR questions were very common and easy. I had answers prepared for each of them. The HR interviewers seemed much more friendlier than the technical interviewers. They asked me about my childhood and my family background. They made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. It was part of the reason why I had a very good HR interview compared to my technical one.
Tips: The most common and the first HR question you are asked is “Introduce yourself.” Prepare a strong but brief answer for this. Interviewers are also very critical of your actions and reactions during an interview. Always sit straight and maintain eye-contact with the interviewers. Smile through the interview and don not let them know that you are nervous. Also avoid making gestures with your hands and sit still. Most importantly, read everything about the company, its work culture, its projects, partners and products.

General Tips: Do not be afraid to take up new challenges. Your every experience, good or bad, will teach you something new and prepare you to face even the worst adversity. Get diligently involved in extra-curricular activities, but at the same time do not neglect your career. Many may tell you that your CGPA does not matter but in reality it does. Try to explore new fields. You don’t have to succeed but experience it.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The written round was fairly easy. 30 questions from each section. The aptitude section was easier which didn't pose any difficulty for most of the candidates. The technical part had basic questions to test the fundamentals.
The test had a different format where each question had a specific time limit. After attending a question there was no option to review it. Around 60-70 % of the candidates got selected for the next round.
Tips: The trick lies in attending as many questions as possible. As said always accuracy matters. But then again it was not a national level exam. So all we had to do was clear the cut offs. And the no of students getting eliminated in this round was not high.
Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 60

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I had a descent experience. The discussion started well but turned rough towards the second half where students started mentioning biased points towards there own gender. Overall it was not that fierce. I started the discussion. The panel had 8 students with 2 moderators. We allowed each and everyone to present their points. 5 students got selected for the personal interview round. Only the ones who had spoke very little were eliminated.
Tips: Well there are lots of tips which are available online on how to tackle GD's. But from my personal experience i would like to state that if you are not well aware of the topic then take the risk and start or initiate the discussion. It's easier to introduce the topic covering the basic points. Or else you can give a suitable conclusion at the end by collecting the points and summering the overall topic.
Duration: 20 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Although i have titled it as a technical interview , it was a technical cum HR interview. The discussion went on for approximately 30 minutes. Starting with my internship experience they covered core areas of automobile industry. I was able to answer most of them and denied politely to whichever questions i didn't know the answer to. They asked about my future goals, my hobbies and achievements. Overall it was very interactive and a healthy experience.
Tips: Be prepared to answer any question based on your resume. Pick your favorite subject and start preparing thoroughly. For e.g for TATA Motors (in fact for all the automobile companies) i covered basic areas of Automobile Engineering (my areas of interest were transmission and drivetrain) . Show some interest that you want to join their company. All in all try to be yourself and give your best. To avoid being nervous, believe that it's not the end. A lot of companies would visit later and life doesn't end here. So keep calm and be expressive.

General Tips: As mentioned earlier.
Skill Tips: As mentioned earlier.
Skills: Self Confidence, Determination, Communication skills
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: As mentioned earlier.
Funny Moments: I was asked the length of football goal post and instead of 24ft i said 24m to which the panel started laughing and giving me suspicious looks. I rectified it quickly though. I guess i had lost my focus a bit towards the end of the round.
