4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There were three rounds, first one being the written round consisting of 50 technical questions and 50 English questions. They were fairly easy.  I had a rough idea of technical knowledge, plus English was quite elementary. So no preparations required
Tips: NA
Total Questions: 100

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: The next round was GD with 10 people in a group
Tips: The main aspect of a GD is to either start it, or conclude it. This is from personal experience of successes and failures and they see the confidence in which you present your points. I had started the GD this time and I was also asked a question post GD related to one of the participant’s views. So being alert and aware throughout the GD helps a lot.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Since I had a lot of extra-acads in my resume, I worked on them, preparing myself to speak fluently about every one of those and possibly connecting them with the roles and responsibilities in the job. The interviewer clearly gave a lot of importance to communication skills, so I made sure I was clear and crisp in my expressions. There were a few technical questions and I was able to answer all of them, as they were all basic chemical engineering stuff and few questions related to my project and internships.
Tips: Whenever asked at the end of a PI, “Do you have any questions for us?” make sure you prepare a sturdy question that impresses the panel. I had prepared 2 questions before I entered the interview room and when posed with the questions, we had a discussion for about 10 minutes by which the interviewers were visibly impressed, because I showed interest in their company, and that creates a positive impact. Be confident even when you don’t

General Tips: Yes! Start preparing and focusing on your expressive and communicative skills, as it will not only boost your personality during GD/PI but also help you in the long run. Don’t just cram to become a 9 pointer, but try to be  excellent in all that you do. Make sure you are involved in a variety of activities so that your resume boasts of diversity.
Skill Tips: Overall my placement experience was a very challenging, yet enriching experience. The placement scenario was a “survival of the fittest” contest, so the key lies in not being disheartened even after multiple failures, and keep trying until you finally hit the mark. There ought to be some company which would prefer you over others, and with that spirit, one should be prepared, for the good, and the worse.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: Chemical being an underrated (although prosperous) department in NIT, so being the placements, I couldn’t have expected a better offer

  • Q1. It was a Personal interview ( technical + HR interview)

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Though we did not have a written round for JCAPCPL, while preparing for other written tests I practiced a lot of aptitude and verbal ability questions. I appeared an online aptitude test every day, to increase my calculation speed. Technical questions in the written rounds are very fundamental. Make a note of all the important equations and definitions when you read a subject. Pay extra attention to the subjects that concern the recruiting company, for example study Steelmaking and Iron making thoroughly for a steel company like Tata Steel. Talk to your seniors, and friends in other institutes and search for previous year questions if you can.
Tips: I had not cleared the written rounds for the first few companies (Future First, EXL and Affine) that visited our campus. I had made it through to the 2nd round of Mu Sigma (Video Synthesis) and GD round of Honda Cars Ltd., but was not selected. The primary reason I couldn’t clear the written rounds was my lack of practice of general aptitude questions. I was too slow and that does not help in a time bound test.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I have only been in one GD (for Honda Cars Ltd.) but did not get through. The experience, however, taught me a lot. It is very important that you speak English fluently. Stay updated on current affairs. Do not start a verbal argument in a GD. Being a good listener is as important as being a good speaker. Do not be diplomatic and try to back your stand with some stats if you can.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: PI rounds can be very unpredictable and one can never be too prepared. The first question in every interview is “Tell me about yourself”, so prepare a  strong but brief introduction. Be witty. Try to learn every tiny detail about the company before the interview. Revise your internship and final year project reports too. A lot of questions are asked about them. Interviewers are also very critical of your actions and reactions during an interview. Always sit straight and maintain eye-contact with the interviewers. Smile through the interview and don not let them know you are nervous.
Tips: Never bluff! If you do not know an answer; you can politely say that you don’t. For technical interviews, prepare at least 2 subjects thoroughly. Make sure that these subjects concern the company for which you appearing. Finally, prepare a couple of relevant questions to ask the interviewer in the end, but never ask about the salary or working hours

General Tips: Placement season can be tough, both mentally and emotionally. Do not be disheartened by rejections. Learn from your mistakes and work on them.Do not solely depend on campus placements and apply for off-campus recruitments too. You should always be prepared, campus dates are unpredictable. Practice a lot of questions and appear online mock tests regularly. Work on your body-language and speaking skills, you might not realize it now, but it is very important.
Skill Tips: Honestly, I have had a very challenging placement season. I had only one job offer, from TCS, in my 7th semester and it was not where I saw myself after graduation. It was frustrating. I was placed very early in the 8th semester and it was a big relief. The PCs have done a good job this season. Even though there was a lack of core companies for branches like Meta, Mining and Ceramic, there was an outpour of new IT, Analytics and startups that provided everyone with descent job opportunities, unlike previous years.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: Yes, I’m very satisfied with my placement. I had made up my mind to join a core company from the beginning of the placement season. Metallurgy placements, especially in core companies, have not been very satisfactory in the last couple of years. So, getting recruited by JCAPCPL, which is a joint venture of TATA Steel and Nippon Steel, is very relaxing.

Tips: Be in touch with coding languages like C, C++. Practice Aptitude and Logical reasoning from starting of summer itself. Try to research on the previous papers of various companies, gives a lot of idea on how to prepare. Skill Tips: It was exhausting, but worth the wait. A learning experience after getting rejected from various companies and improving at each step. The support of friends was a major factor in getting through the tough times.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: To get through the written rounds one’s basics in his concerned subjects must be clear. Aptitude tests are generally followed by a coding round. For cracking this, one must do the assignments given in practical’s by him/her self and at the same time also solve problems from competitive programming site like Hackerrank.com and Codechef.com .
Tips: NA

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There were no GD rounds in this company.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I was already strong in C and DS, so I studied the basics of OperatingSystems and DBMS and prepared all the common interview questions.
Tips: NA

General Tips: I faced a lot of rejections before getting into Oracle Systems. I would advice my juniors to not lose hope under such circumstances and stay focused, and try and convert your weaknesses into strengths.
Skill Tips: One must do the assignments given to him on his own and keep must be clear in the concepts of the theoretical subjects taught. Instead of mugging, one must focus on understanding the concept ,analyze and question them. Know yourself and the company you are applying for.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: Getting an offer to work for a corporation like Oracle is more than I ever expected. It is not just a job but an opportunity for learning and growth.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: I concentrated more on Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal ability sections of the Question Paper. As for the technical section, I took the feedback from my seniors and prepared only 2-3 chapters from where Bajaj written rounds are known to take questions from.
Tips: Spend more time practicing Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal ability sections for the written round as the Technical section comprises of questions from final year syllabus too, so, the amount of effort required to attempt all questions in Technical section will be much more than that required for the QA and VA sections.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I attended some GD sessions of T.I.M.E. coaching institute for some practice. The students of our branch also formed a GD group of our own (headed by Malay Milan Choudhury) and used to have regular practice on topics pertaining to current affairs
Tips: Form GD groups with your friends and have regular discussions on current affairs topics. This will go a long way in improving your English fluency.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: First of all, I took feedback from my seniors, previously placed at Bajaj, as to what questions the HR’s usually ask and to which areas they concentrate more. With the guidance of my elder sister, I prepared answers for generic questions like- “Tell us something about yourself”, “Why should we hire you”etc. But the most important practice is public speaking- one must talk with people in English on a regular basis- this helps you talk to the HR’s fluently and reduces anxiety levels on the day, and I got ample opportunity for that due to my involvement in various clubs
Tips: Start by taking feedback from your seniors and online forums about the written and PI rounds of the concerned company & Prepare answers for generic questions like- “Tell us something about yourself”, “Why should we hire you”, “what are your strengths and weaknesses” etc.  Do whatever it is that calms your nerves before any round. Nervousness must be avoided. This reduces the chances of making silly mistakes and black-out

General Tips: There wasn’t much guidance from the T&P in terms of how to go about preparing for the GD and PI rounds. We had to resort to online forums, help from seniors and discussions within our own branch to learn the tricks of the trade. The guidance I received from my elder sister was one of the main reasons why I bagged a job offer in the first company I appeared for
Skill Tips: The placement coordinators have done an exemplary job this time around and many more companies, some of which had stopped recruiting from NIT Rourkela, have turned up as recruiters this time around. The T&P cell has conducted sessions on GD and PI rounds, but Ibelieve that they should be conducted on a more frequent basis (can be introduced as a course, or made compulsory for all final years or any other way to ensure more participation from students) to ensure realistic improvement.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: No, I am not satisfied with the company I am placed in. I really believe that with the talent pool we have in our Mechanical Engg. Dept. of NIT Rourkela, the students, at least some percentage of it, should be getting better job offers from world renowned companies.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: This is the most crucial part. For me about getting job, my resume serves at least 70% of achievement. Resume should be most precise to the company you apply.
Tips: Don't bluff. But market yourself with what you have. Show each and every achievement of yours as if its a great one. Play with words to get the effect. Resume should be in such a way that just by seeing it, interviewer should know how unique you are.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: They have mostly asked basic questions from Control systems, networks, analog devices.
Tips: Be strong in basics. Its not one night prepeartion. Just try to be logical in the interview. Even though you don't know the answer, think logically and show them how you thinking goes.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This is basically just for nominal.
Tips: But every word you say counts. Mainly in this round. Show your interest clearly. Be friendly. But don't ne open about everything

General Tips: Try your best. Just don't stick for single company. Prepare in general. By the way, I got this through internship.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: Its a core company of electronics, which is good in the field of VLSI. Though right now, it seems to be a normal company. The experience is really worth to continue in this field.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: After getting rejected at few companies I started practicing aptitude problems and reading about the basics of all the chapters of my branch. It’s not mandatory for anyone to study all your branch papers and score 100% in written exams. To crack the written test the most important point that one should follow is solve 90% of aptitude questions and 50% of our technical questions
Tips: I was rejected at BAJAJ and TATA HITACHI as I couldn’t clear the written exams. I did not practice much aptitude questions, I think this is the primary reason

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I used to ask all my peers and seniors regarding the GD topics they faced during their time. You can find recent topics in the internet, but what really matters is how you express yourselves. Your approach and communication skills are tested. Master the English language, read newspapers
Tips: NA

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: First of all I figured out my strengths and weaknesses. My strength was my summer project that I did during my training at Maruti Suzuki, Gurgaon. Secondly since it was an automobile company I have also prepared well with my basics of automobile engineering and IC Engines. I was having a little lack of confidence regarding attending the tricky HR questions, as mostly what you answer that will never by fully correct so I have prepared for answers that will at least impress the interviewer and give him an impression that this guy is willing to do the job and has a strong determination to learn and excel within the company.

General Tips: Practice aptitude questions during summer this will help u reach the interviewer where you can exhibit your skills. Stick to the basic fundamentals of whatever you study. Take your internship very seriously and don’t just visit the company for a certificate. Before going to any company interview first do your homework and learn about the job profile and the history of the company.
Skill Tips: Initially I had a very less practice of aptitude problem hence faced a bit problem in clearing the written exams. Other than this I was not opting for any non- core or analytics company hence I have to focus on the detail study of my branch paper as per the requirement of the company.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: From the very beginning of my engineering carrier as a mechanical engineer I have dreamt to be a part of an automobile company and finally I got placed at Ashok Leyland. So, Yes!!

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There were 4 sections containing quantitative aptitude, verbal ability, logical reasoning and technical knowledge. The questions in the technical section were mostly from the previous year GATE papers. However, they were a tad above normal difficulty level and required in-depth technical knowledge
Tips: I did some questions from Arun Sharma for QA. For verbal ability and logical reasoning, I relied on my skills. Since TATA was recruiting for the first time in many years for mining, so I was absolutely clueless about the technical part and had gone to the exams without any solid preparations.
Duration: 120 minutes
Total Questions: 95

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Not much preparation. One needs to understand the purpose of a GD round. It is to scrutinize a candidate’s ability to comprehend, present and listen to others. People often confuse GDs with debates and take a very tough stand as a result of which they fail to adapt to someone’s version of the issue. Candidates also rush in to make a conclusion when there is need of none. The aim should be to guide the discussion yet avoid being the dominant force and at the same time, being smart in using others’ points/ arguments to your advantage. One needs to be updated with the latest happenings via newspaper and blogs. And not to forget the youtube videos that serve as a crash course.
Tips: NA
Duration: NA minute

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: It was the 3rd & the last round the Personal Interview. They didn’t have a look at the CV and kept the questions strictly related to the technical and management aspects of mining. They also posed some genuine and general HR questions towards the end of the interview.
Tips: Before the interview round, I decided to target a certain section of my curriculum. I read as much as I could on that topic and ensured that I didn’t make a fool out of myself when I answered the questions. I had also practiced my introduction, as it shapes the entire interview. I had made sure that I included my technical expertise in my introduction and I had carried all my projects and models in the form of documents.

General Tips: First of all, decide whether you want a core job or a non-core job. People spend the 7th semester while contemplating about their choices and desires. By the time they arrive at a conclusion it is too late. If you are interested for a core job, you have to be technically knowledgeable. At the end, it is always luck that decides whether you will be getting the job or not. But one cannot turn a blind eye to the need of preparation.
Skill Tips: It was exhausting. Although, it lasted just one semester yet it was mentally taxing. One has to be psychologically tough to get till the last round and handle rejection after that. And it takes even a tougher mind to get your composure back after a rejection. Not to forget the role of my supportive parents and friends who were there with me through difficult times. And I wasn’t adequately prepared to clear the quantitative aptitude round of assessment process. It took a bit of effort to hone my skills and after 2 failed attempts I was able to clear the written rounds of all the companies that I appeared for.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: I am quite happy and satisfied with the company that I am placed in.TATA Steel is a great place to start your career at. I always wanted a core job and it was necessary for me that I got one. Given the companies that visit NITR for Mining Engineering, I am more than just happy to settle for it

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Mostly concentrated on the programming questions. There were 2 coding questions. First one of 40 marks and 2nd one of 20 marks. Other sections consisted of quantitative, aptitude, verbal ability and technical questions that were 1 marks each. I guess solving at least one of the programming questions was essential for getting shortlisted. I would say difficulty level was above average. Important aspect was speed. I did most of the practice from geeksquiz but like I said I was concentrating of the programming questions as they carried more marks.
Tips: NA

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There was no GD round exactly. It was an application design round. I had no idea about this round. However stuff that we learnt in the System Analysis and Design coursework helped me. We were asked to design an application for an E-Commerce organization. It was pretty easy for me to explain this with all the data flow and the database design and the logic used to implement those.
Tips: NA

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I went through some of the interview papers for SAP. Got an idea as in what are the questions they normally ask.Turns out they did stress a lot on OOPs concepts and C++. I had already done my homework from tutorialspoint a day before the interviews. So wasn’t that hard to answerthe questions. The 2nd technical round was a challenge as I was askedquestions from OS and DBMS too. I would say a little bit more preparationfrom geeksquiz and geeksforgeeks and tutorialspoint(as I forgot syntax

for one of the queries) would have been good. Not much from Data Structures were being asked.

The managerial round was kind of tricky. Not only the interviewer was checking my technical aspect, he was also looking at the logical part as in how I approached a problem. I was asked a couple of questions from the current affairs too. Also some questions regarding Inflation and the economy. Staying updated can be a plus point here.
Tips: A clear concept on C++, OOPs, DBMS and OS is sufficient. Also one should definitely be thorough with his/her resume. Not much Data Structure was asked but I would definitely suggest to go through the DS concepts too

General Tips: Also do not ignore Aptitude and Quantitative questions as they do contribute to the total score and often they are the key factor in decidingcandidates for the next round.                  For CS people: Do not underestimate the ECE people. Most of them prepare for CAT so they are pretty good with the quant and apti.
Skill Tips: A clear concept on C++, OOPs, DBMS and OS is sufficient. Also one should definitely be thorough with his/her resume. Not much Data Structure was asked but I would definitely suggest to go through the DS concepts too
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: It was frustrating especially with all the rejections. Some rejections with the pretty lame excuses were hard to buy. However all well that ends well. I am pretty relieved with having a backup now. I should have given some effort initially with the interview preparations. Also Yes. SAP is considered as a good company to start a successful career. Iam pretty much satisfied with this on campus offer. I will be applying off campus in other dream companies of mine.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: the more important round after written test, the “psychometric test” that is often called a non-eliminate round, is actually a silent killer I felt. Psychometric test asserts the personality of a student. And in my interview panel one panellist was specially dedicated for this. He would not ask you any question but silently judge you throughout the interview and compare your behavior with your psychometric test results. If they find the test results mismatching with how you portray yourself during the interview they would simply dis-select you. So it is important to appear this seemingly unimportant and boring test very sincerely and honestly
Tips: I never felt very confident about the technical questions of the written round. But the assuring fact was no one did. And usually cut off of the technical section comes to a relatively lower mark which is achievable. So I focused more on the quantitative sections which this time bore 2/3rd of the total marks in the written test.
Duration: 90 minutes
Total Questions: 90

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: In a small group I along with 2-3 other friends of mine were practising GD in the hostel. We practised in several unconventional situations by virtually creating them in my room. And those sessions really helped us. In fact another friend who was also a part of our small GD group got placed in Hero MotoCorp.
Tips: NA

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: My strongest points for the interview were my internship experiences at Maruti Suzuki,Gurgaon and Ingersoll Rand, Ahmedabad in 2nd and 3rd year summers respectively. I had used my training period in the best possible way to understand the technical as well as non-technical aspects of the functioning of their production segment. And to my surprise, the interviewers even went on asking questions like the practicalities of human resource management that I experienced during my training. Apart from that I ensured that I was thorough with at least two of core subjects, a sound knowledge of automobile engineering. For the HR interview I had prepared many typical HR questions with answers much prior to any interview I had faced.
Tips: First was Bajaj Auto company who came for placements for which I was not prepared at all. The placement season had just started. When you do not work hard so as to deserve something you want, I believe it takes a toll on your self confidence. So one should better have in mind which companies he/she would want to get placed in and work accordingly well in advance. Second was Mu Sigma, coincidentally on the same day as Bajaj. I was eliminated on the problem solving round. I don’t exactly know the reasons as I have seen people having the same questions and same answers (same rough work as well :-D ) having cleared that round. So I think luck also plays a role and not everything is meant to go your way all the time.

General Tips: One was that I was not particularly unwilling to join a non-core company in the beginning but gradually with my preparations, my orientation changed towards joining an automobile company. Further, having the knowledge that there might be a couple of auto makers in the pipeline this season, also helped me focus on a few specific core subjects of my branch. Preparation needs smart studies. One just can’t go on reading every page of a book. And knowing exactly which areas to emphasize on, for which company, is a real challenge.
College Name: NIT ROURKELA
Motivation: I am very much satisfied with the company I am placed in. It would be a dream for anyone in my position willing to join core sector, to be a part of the world’s largest two wheeler manufacturing establishment. It is just that I had actually targeted Maruti Suzuki from the beginning of the year and even I was shortlisted after its written round. Their further rounds were yet to commence but in the meantime Hero MotoCorp came for placements and I cleared it.
