Broadcom urges VMware customers to patch ‘emergency’ zero-day bugs under active exploitation
- Broadcom has urged VMware customers to patch three zero-day vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited by hackers.
- The vulnerabilities, collectively known as "ESXicape," affect widely-used software hypervisor products - VMware ESXi, Workstation, and Fusion.
- If successfully exploited, the vulnerabilities could allow attackers to escape their sandbox and gain unauthorized access to the hypervisor and subsequently compromise any other virtual machine on the same physical data center.
- Urging customers to apply the patches immediately, Broadcom has released security patches for the vulnerabilities, which were discovered by Microsoft and have been actively targeted by ransomware groups in the past.

Ransomware criminals love CISA's KEV list – and that's a bug, not a feature
- Attackers are actively monitoring databases of vulnerabilities useful for ransomware attacks, with 28% of bugs in CISA's KEV list used by ransomware criminals in 2024.
- The KEV program aims to improve patching in the US public sector but is unintentionally benefiting the private sector.
- Some vulnerabilities exploited by ransomware groups were added to the KEV catalog after being used.
- Old vulnerabilities were exploited as well, like CVE-2018-10561 in Dasan GPON home routers.
- In 2024, 40% of exploited vulnerabilities were at least four years old, prompting the need to address persistent threats.
- Ivanti faced zero-day exploits impacting its VPN and security products, urging customers to enhance security measures.
- D-Link's reluctance to patch critical vulnerabilities in end-of-life products poses risks, prompting consideration for switching vendors.
- VMware's handling of critical flaws led to recommendations to evaluate alternative virtualization platforms for better security practices.
- Organizations are advised to consider alternative VPN and security solutions to mitigate risks of system compromise.
- Security researchers urge users to prioritize security and opt for vendors with better security practices and rapid vulnerability response.

Euro cloud crew says we-won't-sue deal with Microsoft is 'off-track'
- Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers of Europe (CISPE) has said Microsoft is not meeting technical commitments that formed a settlement agreement designed to settle the legal dispute with a group of European cloud providers over software licensing. CISPE has opened the European Cloud Computing Observatory to write progress updates. Microsoft has already met some of its commitments, but two major areas have been left behind. The MOU is designed to give CISPE members confidence that Microsoft's SPLA licensing programme will continue for five years at least and offer a competitive means for them to combine Microsoft software with their own cloud infrastructures, but recent price changes from Microsoft have been found to undermine this commitment, according to the Technical Committee on Cloud Service Provider Interoperability and Portability (ECCO).
- The first progress update published by ECCO classifies the overall "status of the Microsoft MOU with CISPE as Amber/ Off-track". According to ECCO, Hoster Product Development and Service Provider Licensing Agreement Program Support and Sustained Competitiveness are behind schedule. The CISPE had proposed its concerns in November 2022 regarding the Microsoft charging up to five times more for certain software to run on third party infrastructure than its own. Additionally, CISPE also took issue with the technical adjustments needed to run other programs on rival cloud services.
- CISPE has campaigned for Broadcom, which had changed the license agreements for VMware software, to reconsider its terms.
- Microsoft has nine months to meet its settlement requirements signed in July 2019. Failure to do so could result in legal action again.
- There is a CISPE member concern that too much focus has been applied to the development of Azure Local as the route to delivering MOU requirements. Teams dedicated to the development of that product may not be working in full understanding of the legal requirements of the MOU and thus may not be prioritising the right work.
- ECCO is urging Microsoft to assess the potential of Azure Local to meet the needs, and to suggest alternatives sooner rather than later if it finds it is not the right solution.
- CISPE and Microsoft last year agreed to an MoU that sought to end unfair software practices and create new benefits for all European cloud infrastructure service providers.
- CISPE's goal is for Microsoft to ensure a fair and competitive market between European cloud infrastructure providers to sell Microsoft software.
- Ultimately the aim of the MoU is not the development of any specific product but for Microsoft to "ensure a fair and competitive market for European cloud infrastructure providers to sell Microsoft software to their customers".
- Azure Local was previously branded Azure HCI Stack.
