Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Technical test consisted of 27 questions in 30 minutes. Questions were easy but constraint of time is there. Aptitude test consisted of 50 questions in 30 minutes. Questions in aptitude section were of mixed difficulty.
Tips: Try to solve easy questions first to maximize the score. Out of 70 odd students only 12 were selected for further rounds.
Duration: 30 minutes
Total Questions: 27

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: It was a simple topic and everybody spoke without any hustle (which happens a lot in GD's). Observers were sitting in the corners and they told the shy ones to speak. GD ended in about 5 minutes and only two people were eliminated out of group of seven.
Tips: GD's are primarily done to check our command on language. Try to speak valid points and have a common conclusion in the end. People who mentor the group always get the benefit.
Duration: 10 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: It was a technical + HR interview conducted by a panel of 4 people. In the beginning we have to give a presentation for two minutes on a random topic given by them. After that I was asked to introduce myself. Then I was asked few questions related to my family background. They asked about one favourite subject from each candidate followed by few questions.Interview was on shorter side and ended in about 10 minutes. HR did not asked much questions. One person scanned the CV throughout the interview.
Tips: Have thorough knowledge of your favorite subjects (atleast two subjects). One should be well versed with automobiles. Training is important and questions are asked on that. One should have strong and clear fundamentals along with interest to work with them. All the best

Skill Tips: Have faith in your abilities and try to pace the interview along your interests.Be confident. Be happy. Test is very important with low selection rate. So, give it seriously. Good Luck.

Interview Questionnaire

2 Questions

  • Q1. How car efficiency effected on going to height
  • Ans.

Car efficiency decreases with increasing altitude due to lower air density.

    • As altitude increases, air density decreases, resulting in less oxygen available for combustion.

    • This leads to a decrease in engine power and efficiency.

    • For example, a car that gets 30 mpg at sea level may only get 20 mpg at high altitudes.

    • Turbocharged engines can partially compensate for the decrease in air density by compressing the air before ...

  • Q2. What is Otto cycle,dual cycle
  • Ans.

Otto cycle is a four-stroke combustion cycle used in spark-ignition engines. Dual cycle is a theoretical cycle that combines constant volume and constant pressure processes.

    • Otto cycle: intake, compression, power, exhaust strokes

    • Used in gasoline engines

    • Dual cycle: combines constant volume and constant pressure processes

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The criterion for selection were:
-75% aggregate overall
-70% in each of the preceding 6 semestors
-No gap year after class 12 or otherwise
Tips: Focus on academics throughout college life irrespective of what your peers or seniors may tell you. Every company keeps a cut off.

Round: Test
Experience: The test had two sections:
-45 questions of technical aptitude
-45 questions of Quant/Verbal/LR

The technical questions covered: Strength of materials, thermodynamic, heat and mass transfer, refrigeration and Air conditions, IC engines, Fluid systems.
A lot of numericals were asked. Theory was given lesser weight.

Quant and Verbal were above average as compared to other companies however much below MBA entrances (as inferred from talks with several colleagues)

Tips: Since the company visits right at the beginning of the placement session right after summer internship, there is little time to brush up on your coursework if you didn't do it already. Instead you could steal a march on other students by ensuring you devote a larger part of your test to quantitative part as it is often the difference creator between students.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Questions: 90

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: They were interested in the practical application of both my projects and their replicability in real life at minimal cost. They even discussed how I could install those systems at my home, what would be the efficiency and output. They were also interested in the designing aspect and operating parameters (and simulations work from MATLAB, CFD, ANSYS was not focussed at)

No coursework theory questions/derivations etc were asked.

I told them about my leadership positions at college level and asked them about different departments at the company and procedure of switching between them.

The interview was a pleasant and thought provoking experience.
Tips: It is advantageous to have research papers or being a part of a technical team (however even students without either of them were selected too).

Prepare common questions like strengths, weaknesses, about yourself.

Read the website of company thoroughly and mention testimonials from the site in your interview for a lasting impression.

And most importantly, your projects give you leverage in the interviews so be thorough with them.

Skills: Critical Thinking, Ability To Think Out Of The Box, Practical Application Of Concepts
College Name: Delhi Technological University, Delhi

I applied via Campus Placement and was interviewed in Dec 2016. There were 4 interview rounds.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Technical questions were based on IC engines, dome, strength of materials and few questions related to turbo-machines. Basically they covered almost every core topic. They are not based on bookish knowledge rather questions were related to practical applications.
Aptitude- this part is very important and is the deciding round. Try to score as high as possible in this section.
Tips: Practice aptitude, pariksha tests will serve the purpose.
Technical- apart from brushing all your core concepts, also go through sample mechanical engineering test questions on internet.
Duration: 45 minutes

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: Interview was completely technical. They asked me what were my projects and internships and which was the favorite one. Make sure u know everything about your project/internship. If it is IC Engines related they will grill u on that. Mine were on heat transfer (jet impingement cooling) and turbomachines. They asked me to explain about them.

They asked me about the ic engines lab experiment which was on emissions and asked me to draw the emission characteristics (co, Hc, NOx).
Other questions were related to porous media (my Btech project), cruising and idling conditions and air/fuel ratios, emission norms in India etc
Tips: Make sure in every explanation u give u should highlight the R&D aspect of it. They were particularly looking for people interested in R&D.
Brush all the core topics, especially IC engines. If you did any work related to ic engines they will ask u on that, else they will test your subject knowledge.
Also learn something about the latest technologies in automobiles and how bajaj contributed to them.

Skills: Technical knowledge, Interest in R&D

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The minimum criterion for applying to the company was CGPA more than 6.0 with no backlogs and more than 60% in classes 10th and 12th.
In the written test there were quantitative aptitude questions, logical reasoning questions and few questions from the main topics of mechanical engineering.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Our group consisted of 8 students. First we were given 3 topics from which we had to choose the topic of discussion by mutual consent in 2 minutes. The topics were:
Is jugaad innovation?
3 Idiots and Munnabhai MBBS – which movie had a better message?
Can India achieve 9% GDP growth rate by 2020? Why and how?
We chose the first topic and the group discussion went in a civilized manner, everyone got a chance to speak. Finally 5 students were shortlisted for the interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They asked me to explain my internship and one of my projects and asked me to emphasize on what was my role in them.
It was a mix of both technical and HR interviews where in between they were also putting various HR questions like how do I see myself as an individual and what are my family values. They also inquired about my long term goals and how am I suitable for the company. One question that was typical was why was I not pursuing a MBA or MS.
They wanted people who will stick with the company rather than those who would run away for higher education.
