5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Written test: 3-4 aptitude questions (CAT type) + 2 subjective HR questions

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Case Study
You will be given a case and supporting data about the case. There are no standard cases and hence there is no point discussing the case which I faced. There are 3-4 questions based on the case mainly to gauge your logical thinking and common sense. Try to write whatever you think and do that in a structured manner. Prep case solving using internet (lot of material is available).

Round: HR Interview
Experience: HR Interview
Generic questions on leadership, initiative taking, team playing etc. Just prep well before the interview. Follow a systematic approach in all the answers: Describe the context/situation, describe what you did, what you learnt, impact of your actions and finally generalize the learning lesson by demonstrating how you can utilize that lesson in your workplace

Round: PRINCIPAL INTERVIEW
Experience: Round 3: Principal RoundIts mainly an extension of HR round but you should be ready to face some weird apti questions and puzzles. I was asked a very interesting question which fortunately I was able to solve (do not remember the details now, but remember using calculus for that puzzle :-|). Rest of the interaction is about the job role and your fit. Keep asking smart and engaging questions. The interviewer will be the head of the office who is a partner. So, this round counts a lot. Anyways your chances are good if you have reached this round because generally it is the last round. Yes, FYI, all rounds are elimination rounds.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Aptitude test majorly comprise of Quants ,Data Interpretation and English (majorly RC's) ....slightly on the higher side of R.S agrawall.Would recommend Arun Sharma's 3 books (quant, verbal and DI +reasoning ) . If you are already preparing for CAT , entire process would be like a MOCK test
Tips: Selection Process:- Written Round + GD+ PI (As in 2011 )
All rounds were eliminatory.
Eligibility :- 70 % throughout
CTC :- 4 L
Bond :- 2 Years / 1 lakh (You can easily do away with bond until 6 months of your joining,in case you get into some better organisation (Read PSU for non CS/IT people) . No company will sue you for bond amount . But if time spent is more than 6 months and you are joining another IT company , then it might land you in trouble ,because all IT company do a background verification )

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Interviews generally are non technical and revolve around 'why this company' and 'why you' .Highly NOT recommended for those who want to grow their technical expertise . Headstrong works in Capital Markets and you can expect good exposure to BFSI domain.

2 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Behavioural Interview
Experience: I am shedding some light on the Nomura Recruitment Process and what you should do to avail such an opportunity (apart from Posting here:D). Please bear with me as i am using the same format as i posted in some other site smile emoticon smile emoticon .1: What was the reaction when you first got selected and how did your parents react?Trisha : Well, considering that I already had a job, I was happy and satisfied, but not ecstatic altogether. My parents however, were very glad. My basic emotion at the moment was contentment.2. Can you describe the hiring process in brief?Trisha : The hiring process consisted of a written aptitude test, followed by three interviews, two technical and one HR. The written test consisted of a quantitative section, a verbal ability section, and a section on Logical Reasoning. The first technical interview comprised of puzzles, basic questions on finance, some problems on programming and some questions about internships. The HR round was fairly simple and predictable. The second technical interview primarily revolved around a slightly complex programming problem.3. Which was the toughest question and how did you answer it?Trisha : I was asked to write a code/algorithm for a chess game in the last interview, and not being a Computer Science or Information Technology student, I was initially a little reluctant in going ahead with the problem. However, I started simplifying the problem to a code for a single King and a single Pawn, concentrating on protecting the king from all directions. The interviewer too helped me along the way by giving certain hints and directions, and eventually, over the pleasant interaction which lasted about twenty minutes, we had before us a well written algorithm for the question.4. What according to you was the company looking for in candidates?Trisha : I think the primary thing they were looking for was smartness and strong analytical skills. They wanted people who, when faced with tricky and perplexing situations, can do better than giving up right away. They wanted street smart and confident people, who had the inherent ability to quickly and efficiently develop decent programming logic.5. What tips you can give which might help other freshers applying similar jobs?Trisha : I will suggest that future aspirants practice solving some mathematical puzzles before appearing for the interview. They should appear very confident and composed throughout the entire process.6. What was that one thing which you think might have helped you over others?Trisha : I believe my confidence might have worked in my favor the most. Moreover, I am usually very good with puzzles and analytical questions, which I think was apparent, and might have played a vital role in my selection.7.Working at Nomura is going to be very challenging. What are your expectations?Trisha : As far as I am concerned, I would get bored without challenges. Hence, I look forward to a very competitive yet healthy work culture at Nomura, that enables me to acquire sufficient domain knowledge in the field of analytics, business and finance.8.Given that you have two offers now (Nomura and Indian Oil) which company are you planning to join and why?Trisha : Though I am still consulting some seniors on the matter and have not made my final choice yet, still I think I will probably join Nomura. That is so because considering my future aim of doing an MBA in finance, I believe my work-experience in Nomura will give me an edge over IOCL during the time of admissions.
Tips: Nomura and Indian Oil Corporation are two completely different companies with completely different profiles and still I being a chemical engineering graduate from BIT Mesra managed to land job offers from both of them. Nomura hires recent graduates from some of the top colleges like BIT Mesra, IITs, NITs etc. Nomura has a strong presence in India and offers a wide range of financial products and services. Nomura normally looks for analyst profiles in investment banking but from engineering colleges it’s usually for a technical profile either to create software to help other analyst make smarter trading decisions or testing profiles to improve upon already existing software. The starting salary for an analyst profile is around INR 8 LPA but within an year or two it quickly jumps to INR 13-15 LPA depending on the performance.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Group Discussion:
It is a 10-15 minute session and no elimination is done at this stage but this stage carries marks which is counted in your overall merit rank.
GD topics are mostly of current affairs.Any recent news or incidents or any matter of national importance which are making headlines in the newspaper may get a place in GD topic so go through the recent important news before appearing in the GD.
Tips: A merit list is prepared based on written score(in your case GATE score)+ GD Score+ Interview Score and those who get their name figured in merit list will be called for medical test which is not too problematic.Hope it helps. Good Luck!

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Interview:
My interview lasted for around 35 minutes.
Interview Panel consists of 7-8 members in which 2-3 will be IIT-Delhi Professors of relevant field. Interview questions are not too complex. During my interview some of the questions were related to HR like which place i belong to,importance of my place, schooling etc etc..then came a bang when they shifted there gear to technical questions mostly related to my industrial training. Major focus of the interview was my final year project. there were some GK questions also like what are the important sectors of indian economy and there percentage contribution in India's GDP blah blah...some basic electrial engineering concepts were also asked..
Guys, prepare your final year project very well coz they ask lot many questions from that portion and also if you have gone thorough any industrial training then prepare that portion too
Tips: Selection Process: GATE + Group Discussion +Interview + Medical Check Up of the standard of Indian RailwayAdditional Information:
All selected candidates will be required to undergo one year PG Diploma in Metro Technology and Management at IIT-Delhi. And during this one year course you will be paid 25000/month along with hostel facility, internet, computer etc etc.
So, basically you will be paid to attend classes unlike in BIT where we used to pay fee for attending our classes ie. semester fee

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There were 3 questions. In all of them we were asked to write the code. As mentioned above
Duration: 30 minutes
Total Questions: 3

Round: Group Activity
Experience: After this round, 27 (From 112) were shortlisted. This second round was called “Group Activity”. The idea in this round was to solve problems in consultation with the Microsoft recruiters. Think of some idea and discuss it with the person allotted to u and then code the algorithm. This was the rule of the game. So people who preferred to solve the problems individually got thrown out in this round. In this round the following problems were thrown to us.

1. There are 3 (non-decreasing) sorted arrays, namely A, B and C. Define a triplet (a, b, c) such that a is in A, b is in B and c is in C. Also, define

dist (a, b, c) = max (|a-b|, |b-c|, |c-a|)

Now find the triplet (a_min, b_min, c_min) from A, B and C such that dist (a_min, b_min, c_min) is minimum among all possible triplets.

Hint: Brute force method: Compute all possible triplets and return the triplet with the min dist value. Smarter Approach: Use 3 pointers. Allot single pointer for single array. Initialize each one of them with the first positions of each of the array. Now compute the dist of the triplet formed by the values pointed by the pointers. Update the bestTriplet if the cost is less than bestTriplet. Next increment the pointer which points to the minimum value among the three. The philosophy is similar to the merge-sort. Only difference is that, actual merging is avoided since merged array does not guarantee three consecutive elements to be from three different arrays A, B and C. The proposed algorithm takes O(n(A)+n(B)+n(C)).2. There is a circular array which is a queue (FIFO). Several threads are trying to either insert or delete elements from the queue. Write code for insert, delete, IsFull, IsEmpty such that the functions are synchronized enabling parallel insertion and deletion.

Hint: It is simple. This problem requires smart use of semaphores

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Round 3 (Tech Interview): Library HallIn this round I met a guy who was the most geeky kind of person. He didn’t even smile at PJs probably. His first question was to describe my project in summer training. The guy had no knowledge in VLSI and related stuffs. So I started the first class lecture of my CAD for VLSI course by Prof. PPC. I described him the basic steps of VLSI design starting from the High-level design to the fabrication. He had many doubts and it seemed that he was impressed with my explanations.

The next question was as follows:

Consider the skyline of a city shown in the picture below. You are given with the (xi, hi, wi) for n buildings. You have to give the silhouette of the city.I proposed one O(n2) algorithm by proposing a construction a graph where each building represents a vertex and there is an edge between two vertices if they are overlapping. For example ith and jth building has an edge between them then either,

xi <= xj <= xi + wi or xj <= xi <= xj + wj

However, he suggested me to optimize the data-structures. Then finally stored the data in a heap and seemed that he was happy. Lastly he said, “I was not interested in the answer actually. It was nice talking to you.”

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Round 4 (Tech Interview):

In this round, I met a bashful person who asked me the following.

1. Code the move of a game which was pretty simple in nature. I am not describing it here. But the tips (courtesy: Chandu and Dhawan who generously contributed towards the Q&A library building during the placement of 2004 batch) that I applied here was, a) code to the detail, b) check the boundary condition c) explain each line to the recruiter, d) ask the recruiter whenever u have any doubt or before making any assumptions and e) definitely think aloud.

2. There is an array where except one number (say magic-number) all are unique. The magic-number repeats itself more than half times the size of the array. e.g. 2, 10, 10, 10, 3. Find the magic-number without using any extra-space and without sorting it.

Hint: Use the given property, “magic-number repeats itself more than half times the size of the array”. This ensures (from Pigeon Hole Principle), that there exists at least one triplet (triplet here stands for 3 consecutive elements in the array) which has the magic-number more than once. So scan the array once and search for the magic-number.3. Gave a simple ‘strcat’ code and asked for the errors in it. The errors were the following:

a) there was no ‘’ in the end.

b) returning a pointer to a character array which is locally declared in the function.

He asked me to correct the code. Simple task.

4. Asked the difference between C++ and Java.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Round 5 (Tech-HR interview):In this round the head (Shankar Shastry, the man who came in the PPT) of the recruiting team called me. He was a nice guy. He asked me about the project in my summer training. Again I lectured him about LISA, ADL, RTL, VLSI design, automatic test pattern generator etc. Then he asked me how do the methods on semaphores are implemented. I didn’t remember anything of that part in OS. I gave a long funda on hardware bit setting, interrupt handling, atomic execution, preemption of the processes etc. I knew that I was not very sure of what I was talking to him, still I continued. Then he asked me about the favorite subject of mine. Also, he asked me to name a product which fascinates me and why? Moreover, what kind of product would I like to work upon. Last question made me apparent of the selection. He asked “Is

there any question for me?”

So this was my experience in Microsoft interview. I liked the problems they asked me. The suggestions for an aspirant would be following.

1. Come prepared with fundamental data-structures and algorithms.

2. Industry people find the “code” nearer to their heart but feel uncomfortable with “graphs”. They are real expert in the code, but theoretical abstractions are grey areas for them. This is my own realization and I may be absolutely wrong.

3. Interact, interact and interact with the recruiters during the interview. Think aloud. It helps. They are not interested in getting a correct solution but they are more interested in the effort u r putting in and moreover the line of thought that you are having. Above all, remain confident even if u do not know anything about the answer.

4. The interview might span over 7-8 hours at a stretch. So keep biscuits with you since in empty stomach u cannot think smart.
Tips: Tips :Interviews can be a jittery experience. And even if we are seasoned and confident, there are bound to be some butterflies in our stomachs right before the first interview. Once the process starts however, its usually calm, and the ball keeps rolling.Someone with a good grasp of the fundamentals of data structures and algorithms specially trees, linked lists and elementary graph algorithms has a good chance when it comes to clearing a MS interview. Also a lot of questions were typical interview problems that can be found in most books and also around on the internet. If you want a job at Microsoft then prepare well for your interview. Let me know in comments if you found this post useful.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: ONLINE TEST
Experience: Online Screen Test [2 hours]

I was asked to take the test at 8.30 pm. They fixed this test, a week back. Nobody will call you to remind you to take test. Nor the interviewer will call you. It is your responsibility to check ur mail without fail. On that day I was expecting a call from google from evening till 8.25 pm. None called me. I thought that they would have forgot that. I planned to do go out and have food. But suddenly my ipad gave a alert message and it was from gmail app [thanks for ipad, or else i would not have checked my mail in lap top]. It was from google recruiter. The mail stated that he has shared a doc with me and i must answer the questions in it. a google drive link was given. he mentioned that the test was for 2 hours. I was asked to type answers just below each of these questions. 1. Given a source array of integers with possible duplicates and a target integer, write algorithm to find out 2 numbers in source array whose sum is equal to target integer.2. Say you have three tables WORK, USERS, MANAGERS

WORK

- work_id

- user_id

- how_muchUSERS

- user_id

- teamMANAGERS

- manager_id

- teamIf I am a manager, write a select statement to retrieve the work of all users who belong to my team. The mapping of user to team and team to manager are defined in the USERS and MANAGERS table.3. In a Chrome extension, which file contains the most important information of the extension like version, pattern matches, etc.4. There are three rooms, and there are Princess, Flowers and Snake in those rooms. The doors of all the rooms have incorrect nameplates. i.e., the nameplate for the princess’ room is not Princess. Similarly, the nameplate for the Flowers’ room is not Flowers. You need to find the room of the Princess without going to the room of Snake. How do you find?5. Which is faster: finding an item in a hashtable or in a sorted list? And Why?6. What are some of the most popular Data interchange formats when using APIs7. Name some popular APIs for each of these

Social

Commerce

Service(llike a photo service etc)8. How would you change the format of all the phone numbers in 1000 static html pages?9. If you had an opportunity to design the Google Suggest system, please let us know how you would approach it and how you would execute the plan in terms of settings up systems like(data stores or databases, indexing services etc)10. How do you find out if a number is a power of 2? And how do you know if it is an odd number? Write code in the language of your choice.
Tips: Since i have prepared for tech interviews like amazon, i was able to do it good.My sincere thanks to geeksforgeeks[You r doing a great Help]. My entire preparations are only from this site. After a week i got a call from HR and informed that i cleared the first round .

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Then after two days i was told that i will have a telephonic interview with one of the google developers from adwords team .They scheduled a telephonic interview the next weekTelephonic interview[I screwed up here ][Design Thinking Interview ] [1 Hour]There were two interviewers on phone. First they asked me to run through my resume. Then the first question came1) how will improve the revenue of the cafeteria of the office.Lots of discussions went and i think, i really did that well.2)[Actual question which i screwed up. Bad Time for me]
Number of users in 2001 for adwords, chrome, gmail, android and picassa are in the ratio of 6:9:14:13:8, and in 2004 we add 3 lakh more users. New ratio is 8:12:13:11:6. Number of picassa users in 2004= 1,44,000. Calculate number of adwords users in 2005.A basic math question that, even a school student can solve. But in that tension i was not able to do it. I took some time and finally gave him a answer. I myself knew that it would be wrong. But interviewer said great lets move on to next question[just to boost up me - good person].My actual job role revolves around developing tools for the the ad review team which will review the ad and reject illlegal ones. So third question was related to that .He told me that as i am from a tech background, i need to explain him technically wat will i do. He also said that he did not need the actual solution. They will just see the way i approach the problem. That an existing problem and they are open to suggestions.3) In google adwords there are about 30 million ads from 42 lanuages . Wat will i do review the ads and reject ads that do not comply with specific rules .Regarding the criteria under which google bans a ad as illegal – i discussed about different criteria .Out of the criteria’s i told , he asked me to consider only three criteria .
a) Link not working
b) Drug related ads
c) trademarks[trademark used by the companies]I gave lot of approaches like for link not workinga) designing a autobot which will automatically click ads link and check whether it is redirecting to correct page or not . Autobots are used by hackers to get money for the ads they posted . I suggested that by designing similar autobot we can validate the link.b) to check drug related ads -
To detect the language we can first check the geographic location from which the ad is getting posted and can narrow down to some less choices from which we can detect the language
i suggested him that we can create a trie which some specific keywords (like coccaine ) and do pattern matching with that and reject the add it contains any of the works in trie .The interviewer gave me another constraint wat if there comes a ad “coccaine rehabilitation center” we should reject those kind of ads na . thats for a good cause . So i suggested him that i can maintain another set of trie which can contain those set of keywords.Fist check trie1 if drug related keywords exist .
Next check trie 2 if other types of keyword exist.
– if keyword only present in trie1 [reject ad]
– if both tire return true [can reject . but its better that those ad's alone can be subjected to manual evaluation for rejection].I used trie as it can do the pattern matches faster .
Tips: For trademarks also i discussed using similar datastructures and the interviewer was ok with my answer[i thought].He said that “We are done with here . The HR will contact u later ” and asked any questions “i asked few questions about the work they do in google” . and finally i finisehed with “Hope u r enjoying in GOOGLE ! ” He said “Of course yeah !”I thought that i did the first and third questions well but screwed the easy second question . i am sure that i will not get selected for the onsite interviews because of that . I told to myself ” dont worry yar ! u r not lucky enough to join google !”a week after i got this mail as expectedThank you for your interest in Google. We carefully reviewed your background and experience, and though we do not have a position that is a strong match with your qualifications at this time, we will be keeping your resume active in our system. We will continue to use our database to match your profile with new opportunities and will reach out to you if we find an opening for which you may be qualified. Thanks again for your interest in Google’s careers and unique culture; we hope you will remain enthusiastic about our company.”BEST OF LUCK (with confidence)

General Tips: As many of the enthusiastic 2003 engineering passed outs, i too applied for a job in Google jobs page. I know that its very difficult that a resume gets noticed by google.Suddenly one fine day i got a call from Google HR saying that they are interested in my profile and asked me if, i was ready to go with the interview process[Come on! who will say no for Google]. I was surprised.

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Written Test ::sorry it was obviously before gd.. Then after they conducted written test which was completely aptitude based i.e. no techie stuff was there. The pattern was 60 mins and 40 questions. NO NEGATIVE MARKING. All were of mixed sort; no separate sections; like there were questions from DI, LR, simple math, verbal. A total of 405 people sat in written and finally 42 were selected in the next interview process. Since they started their procedure in the afternoon so they decided to extend their process to next day too. So my interview was on next morning

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: GD time ::After that we were divided into groups...like 10-14 members in a group...
they will give u a situation on which u have to discuss vth ur group and get a solution..
Some situation like
1. Some ABC company is in loss...what vl u suggest to overcome the losses??
2. There is already some company which is in lead in a city...what vl u do to your get the company to that position??
3)A company wants to update its technologies and there are only a few resources available..what v u do?
And the company can be an IT company or mobile company..
Or it cud be also a restaurant or a pizza corner etc...Whatever be the situation..remeber some points..
4P's(price,product,place and promotion)
3C's(company,competitors and customers)..try to give ur points reminding these...!!After knowing the situation..u will be given some time to discuss it vth ur group..(work like a team...its not GD...so don't argue...don't dominate...)
Its not about what solution u come up with its about how u approach(anyways they are not gonna take ur solution:P)
Tips: Its not about what solution u come up with its about how u approach(anyways they are not gonna take ur solution:P)
We had 30mins to discuss and we were provided a sheet on which we should write our points including diagrams or any graphs etc..There will be a person watching u while u r discussing. After the discussion they asked us to present it individually...we already discussed who will tell what...so there wasnt any tension during the presentation..We presented our solution..each member vl have something to speak about.
after the presentation they asked some questions regarding the situation...Remember "body language and ur confidence while speaking are very important"..

Round: REJECTION ROUND
Experience: Then there were two rounds of interviews
First was named as the Rejection Round. The 42 people were divided in three groups uups it boils down to 13 . the questions were mix Technical + HR. Only one person was there in panel.
Some questions were:
1.tell me something about yourself.
2.tell me something about your projects.
3.about C++. I wrote it in my CV.
4.about life experiences.
5.any thing about PPT, you would like to change or say bout ?The main thing was even if you were caught, how well you defend yourself with full confidence. My interview lasted for about 35 to 40 minutes. Just answer honestly and confidence will automatically reflect in your answer. Prepare about some past good experiences of your life that you can share with them. They may ask it as they asked me. Also remember one must have excellent communication skills in order to improve selection chances. After this first round of interview the results were immediately listed within 10 mins and only 17 were selected for the next round of interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My interview was cool..the HRs were cool actually...
as soon as I entered into the room...they introduced themselves to me...
And the questions are mentioned above
--All simple questions--
But they asked technical questions too in other panels...so prepare for it..now main questions like1. Why you wanna join Deloitte ?
Do you have any other job offers from any other company.? (luckily or unluckily I had one with me).
You need to fully convince them about it. Few general questions and That’s it my interview was over. After that we were asked to wait for 20 mins. Soon the results were ready and the team came out of the room and announced that they had finally short listed only 6 (do remember cause this was my first placement) people from 17. I was completely shocked after hearing that. Then one by one they announced names and my name was their at 3rd position. I was there in those six. FINAL SIX OUT OF 405(don't remember). We all 6 were very happy and later were taken over to a lunch by the Deloitte team.
Tips: Those who seriously wanna join Deloitte don’t think much and simply prepare well.MY suggestion is just speak confidently..and keep a pleasant smile on your face during the interview..
and prepare for all the questions that you can possibly get from your resume...!! MAY your Success Be with YOU ,, All Hail Jesus

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The written test of Polaris will contain objective type multiple choice questions. The questions will be in the pattern of GRE/CAT exam. There will be analytical, arithmetical, technical, quantitative and verbal reasoning type questions. There will be no negative marking for the wrong answers. There will be a total of 120 questions that has to be answered within 90 minutes. This written test is mainly conducted to check the candidates’ basic technical knowledge, aptitude, reasoning and mental ability. There will be a cut off for the exam and those scoring above the cut off will be selected for the final interview
Tips: Preparation is an essential element for getting through the placement test. The candidate has to develop knowledge on the basic technical papers. He should also have good aptitude knowledge to answer the questions from verbal and non verbal reasoning, analytical question, etc. The candidate can prepare using the previous year sample question papers of Polaris recruitment available in the net. This gives a better idea of the pattern of the test and helps in time management. Various reference books are also available in the market by which the candidates can practice. Since the exam is highly competitive, the candidate should be well prepared for the exam.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Those clearing the written test will be called for the interview. The candidate can expect both technical as well as personal questions from the interview panel. The interview may sometimes be of 15 minutes or it may extend up to 1 hour demanding on the interviewer and the candidate.
