AMD’s data center revenue comes up short, leaving investors dismayed
- Chipmaker AMD reported lower-than-expected revenue in its key data center segment, despite posting solid results overall, causing investors to abandon ship. Q4 earnings was $1.09/share on record-breaking revenue of $7.66bn, up 12% YoY, coming ahead of most analysts' predictions until now. AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su called 2024 a 'transformative year' for the company, in which it generated record annual revenue and saw strong earnings growth.
- AMD's data center business grew by its sales 94% to $12.6bn in 2024, thanks to sales of its Instinct GPUs and its EPYC central processing units. AMD's newest Instinct MI300X GPU, which the firm positions as an alternative to Nvidia's chips, accounted for over $5bn of sales in the last year and has been picked up by big data center operators including Meta Platforms and Amazon Web Services.
- However, comapny's stock fell more than 8% in extended trading due to failing to meet investors' expectations of data center revenue of $4.14bn. Su insisted that the company sees a 'steep, long-term growth trajectory' that will eventually grow to 'tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue' in the coming years.
- AMD declined to provide a forecast for AI-related revenue for the coming year which fueled fears that sales of the Instinct GPUs are slowing down. Su praised the emergence of the Chinese AI company DeepSeek Ltd., which rocked financial markets last week when it became clear that its latest large language model could compete with the most advanced LLMs offered by US companies, despite being built at just a fraction of the cost.
- In Q4, AMD's gaming and embedded businesses saw a decline with the former experiencing a sales drop of 59% to just $563m, while the latter saw revenue drop 13% to $923m.
- Within the same quarter, AMD Ventures, participated in a number of funding rounds, including a $333m raise by the cloud infrastructure startup Vultr and a $250m investment in the AI startup Liquid AI.
- Today’s after-hours price action means AMD’s stock is down 33% in the past 12 months.
