Interview Preparation Tips

Interview preparation tips for other job seekers - Here and there, now and then, there arises an impulse inside me, asking if I was going to settle in this company forever. It was like being perforated in a swamp from where you’ve no away to come back out.
At times, I got my excuses to cover up my inability to get a better opportunity. The excuse was plain and simple, “I’m preparing for the government job and if I switch the job now, I might not get enough time to prepare for the gov job unlike with the current settled job”.
Our office team has had members full of the urge to switch the job for better pay. That’s what ultimately matters for them, or anyone for that matter. But as we know, the interview is not just a conversation between two people from different sides. An Interview always has a psychological effect on a candidate’s life as well. An interview is like a battle where either you win or lose. Unlike in medieval times, we show our endeavors through the interviews. While a cracked interview can elate you to another level, a failed interview can also push you to down to the dump of misery. And that is why normally people avoid going to interview when they are not pretty sure about success.
In our team, everyone keeps asking about when the interview will open in Amex. You’ll not believe but team members indeed gladden more upon knowing that no interview is being conducted on this time and will happen in future though than an interview is currently going on. An opportunity on hand to showcase one’s ability makes everyone nervous but knowing that opportunity will be there in the future to take care of coming miseries imparts everyone a comfort.
I would say I used to take lead on those occasions in informing members about the interview timings. In this way, I also vent out my frustrations to keep working in the same organization; an organization I don’t love anymore, for a long period (No, I am not against any company instead I am just illustrating how things went with me). I got an email from Amex about the next Interview openings for our profiles. I told about this to almost everyone in my team, and also beyond the team whoever was familiar to me. I had also taken a member of our team to an Interview to a different company (not Amex). I did not want to go for an interview in that company. But you know what, being an aspirant cricketer, I can tell that you need to play with weak cricket teams as well just to enhance your game for the all-important match. I, with my other friend, failed to crack that interview which I supposed will be a cakewalk. I did not know what was my feeling but obviously, I was not sad. But what happened next made me sad. I did not crack the all-important interview as well. I was told to try again after three months by Amex HR.
Though I was now trying to hide my failures from the team members, they were all knew it already. A friend of mine in the team even took a jibe at me saying Amex interview is not everyone to crack. Jibe like this has broken my heart inside, but I always pretended like I never took those interviews seriously and when I take seriously, I would be going to make it. This made a good solace to me as well. Now I needed a break, to start afresh again.
I went to Goa trip (I might be saying this casually, but I’m not meant how casually I have written it.) and then Shimla and also went back to home town. All this happened in less than a month time.
I was back again. But things were not back normal especially for me. My performance was dipping alarmingly. Adding fuel to fire, one of my friends cracked Amex interview. This was the same friend to whom I persuaded to go for Amex interview. All hangovers from the Goa, Shimla, and home were replaced by a sudden rise of competitiveness around.
Oh, I think I am beating around the bush, let me write about what matters.
By this time, a few more members have also cracked the interview and were serving notice period now. There were allegations of clearing the interview during the bulk-hiring, and allegations were by those who not gathered enough courage to at least face the interview. I was still pretty much one aspiring interview candidate who foolishly didn’t try to give interview in that so-called bulk-hiring. I thought I was rather sharpening my ax for own defined battle. This was not true; I was never prepared for the interview. I missed those alleged bulk-hiring interview solely because I was not well informed. I was partying all the time when I should have been in touch with other members to know when an interview scheduled. Now, I was regretting of not attending the interview. I promised myself to be cautious next time. In the meantime, I have been bullied by other members for not getting selected despite persuading all others for the interview on the first hand. My performance now touched a nadir. Once in consideration for the promotion, was now in a team where even a kid could come and teach a lesson or two to me.
One day, actually on one night, while I was returning from office in office cab. I realized that one of the members of our team was absent. That member was a potential Amex aspirant. Though it was quite mid-night and also member was a girl I still dared to dial her number. “Oh, Krishna! Finally, you are on time rather in time”, she told me. I was trying to decipher what did she mean with those sarcastic words. She added that she went to Amex interview and her along with 10 more aspirants cleared the first 3 round of the interview. And there was only one round left to get selected. I was fuming on myself now. Why the hell was I not aware of this interview again. But, to my reprieve, she also told me that a fresh candidate can also apply for the interview on the next day.
I reached to my home and tried to tale sleep so that I could wake up on time for the interview. I had only 4 hours to sleep. However, I was not able to sleep in fear that I might not wake up on time and interview get missed again. I called one of my friends who were equally if not more desired to crack Amex interview. He never said a word to me on phone but “okay what time should we meet”. I could relate his desperation. I was happy to be with someone having the same level of desperation.
We met at the metro station. We both shocked to see each other. I was thinking I would surprise him with my neat and clean dressing, but I was equally surprised to see him.
We both reached the interview venue. We were now not surprised to see many members of our team already arrived at the venue for the interview. It was rather comforting to see other members around. We were waiting for the interview warily. We were not meant to miss any clue or chance that can provide a lead to others on us or me. Then I saw a few of already joined estranged members of our team. They were all happy and intentionally coming to us to the solace that everything would be fine. I knew that they were just fulfilling their duty in a very murky way.
Interview started. This new day interview started from the beginning for everyone those arrived on the day. A few rounds of initial interview were done. A few candidates now remained there until the final round. The final round was supposed to main round and only challenging round for us. Now, our fate was hanging by thin air. The final round interview started. The first candidate was from our team itself and he was rejected within 4 minutes of the verbal interview. We were not getting tensed with every rejection. Finally, the girl I called last night was interviewed and she was ‘selected’. Woohoo!! She was on the seventh cloud but I thought she was still pretending to be normal as if this achievement was nothing against her potential. Now, it was interview time of my friend (who I met at the metro station). He was preparing himself like a judgment day for him. His interview lasted for more than 5 minutes which I thought was the lengthiest interview and so he must have to get selected.
Now, only I was left to go into the interview room. I don’t know why I was last among those 20 candidates selected for the final round. May be because only I destined to write interview story. And as said, a protagonist always come to conclude the things. I have had nothing in my mind that I would say ‘prepared’. I entered into the interview room. A well looking professional just asked me to sit down. I was not nervous this time, unlike all other occasions of an interview. I knew I had nothing to lose. I already embarrassed myself from my team members enough for being a foolish loser.
In the interview, I was asked to tell about myself. I told him everything I could say about me without losing my composure. And I took one and a half minute to tell about myself. For a moment, I waited for another question. Instead, I was told to go outside and wait for the result. How the hell there could be only one question for me and that too “tell me about yourself”. Nevertheless, I told something that one in a million might have said in their “tell me about yourself” question. I am not going to reveal what were those words. Before leaving the room, I confidently asked the interviewer if there was anything in a resume that might concern him. “No, no everything is good,” I thought he must have said this to make me outside the room.
The interview concluded, now was the time for everyone left to wait for the final announcement.
An HR lady came and counted a few names, 8 names to be precise. In that list, we have had our names. We were almost happy already. She took us to another room. She counted 7 names and announced that there selected. Oh, my god! I had my name on that selected list. I was feeling absolved of all untold crimes.
Then, we heard that my friend (to whom I met at the metro station) was neither selected not rejected, instead, his candidacy was on hold. I was showing a sign of happiness along with sympathy for my friend. He was so close. Moral of the story is “never give up”.
