Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Case Details:
Case 1 : This was a typical ops case. A few pokes made me realize this is a local company, a govt body, is suffering from loss of customers due to long time of processing leading to frustration. The guy kept repeating the fact that most of the application did not need any house survey by the officers but still they used to continue with the process (This was a hint). Poke him more he will give u the entire process flow: 1 . Receive 2. Documentation 3. Survey 4. Permission 5. Fee collection 6. Approval 7. Installation. Poke him more he will come out with the time on each process. It was found points1 , 2, 5, 6 dint take much time. 3, 4, 7 were the time consumers. 4, 7 nothing could be done. Zeroed on 3. Final solution: make categories of applications basis survey requirement. A: Needs survey as it is close to bridges, lakes, rivers etc. B: does not require survey as it is in plain lands. Find indicators to sort out such applications 1 . Maps 2. Customer questionnaire 3. Experience from old customers.
Case 2: Typical micro-eco case. Supply overpowers demand. Prices will fall, profits will go down. Hell will let loose upon the farmers. Solution: 1 . Store it to sell in future = So then think of storage cost + lost of quality + Loss of moisture in the fruit 2. Any sort of value addition possible = 1 . Pulp 2. Ketchup 3. Juices & Squash etc
Case3: That was an easy one, I know u ppl will crack it
Case 4: I messed up with this case. Asked the preliminary questions on the current company ops, why they wanted to expand, and particular revenues targets etc. I dint lay out a structure as such and came out with random variables 1 . Size, demo, populations of Islam, income slabs, requirement etc. Missed out on a very big point and that was govt regulations which was declared to me in the end.
Tips: It’s a telecom – so they are not checking your paper. Too much of silence is dangerous, u have to engage them all the time. Be very clear with your pronunciation, diction voice modulations as he is not seeing u gesticulate. Be loud.

Round: Personal Interview
Experience: Questions asked:
1 . Why consultancy?
2. Why ADL?
3. Long term plans.
The asked a number of brain teasers – which are short shouldn’t take more than 3-4 minutes
I had a good rapport with interviewers. Picked up the hints well. Was honest if I got stuck. Dint maintain long silence over the phone.Messed up the brain teasers because I was pretty much caught unaware most of the time. The last round’s brain teaser was made to be mailed to me to the partner, and it had to be done on 10 minutes!!
Tips: ADL needs separate and an early preparation than the rest as the rounds start early than the actual placements.

Round 1 - HR

(2 Questions)

  • Q1. Tell me about yourself.
  • Q2. Discussion on Bharatnatyam.
Round 2 - Case Study

Have you ever visited rural parts of Maharashtra? (My family owns a mango farm). We had a discussion on how mangoes are cultivated after which I was given the case statement. You have been approached by Maharashtra Government to help bring reforms in mango farming on 3 aspects: Finance, growth in agricultural produce and increasing people connect.
Type of mangoes: Alphonso (different mangoes have a different cultivation process).

Location: Ratnagiri.

Need to bring reform: Government wants to increase export of mangoes.

Weather conditions: as seen in rural Maharashtra. Sometimes unforeseen rains spoil the produce.

I divided it in 2 buckets: (a) steps that can be taken by farmers and

(b) steps that can be taken by government.

A. Farmers: Divided it by months as follows:

July: January (Manure, Water: rains, rainwater harvesting, ground water, Organic Farming, Insecticide);

January: March (Pre-Harvesting: water, covering the ground with leaves to ensure that fruits hanging near the ground don’t get spoilt because of excess heat); April: June (Harvesting (right time to harvest), Theft, Inventory).

B. Government: Financial incentive and support, purchase of excess produce, cutting out the middlemen.

The interviewer cut me off. He asked me if I am passionate about farming. Recommendation
from interviewer: I missed to ask the needs of the farmers: main stakeholders to get affected by the reforms.

Round 3 - Case Study

Which industries have you worked in before?
Picked hotel industry. Case: A hotel chain (say ITC) wants to grow its business. Assume covid cases are reducing and the government is allowing international travel.

Number of hotels: around 30.

Market share: 10%

Operations: PAN India.

Services offered: as seen in any luxury hotel.

Buckets: Covid safety precautions and services offered: current and additional.

Covid safety precautions: stated all the government and WHO regulated precautions.

Service Offerings: took an example of Goa:

I gave examples basis my own past hotel experiences on what I liked and what I disliked.

Round 4 - HR

(3 Questions)

  • Q1. Follow up questions on my introduction.
  • Q2. Industries I have worked on.
  • Q3. If an FMCG company wants to launch a product, what steps should it follow.
  • Ans.

To launch a product, an FMCG company should follow several steps including market research, product development, branding, distribution, and marketing.

    • Conduct market research to identify consumer needs and preferences

    • Develop the product based on the research findings

    • Create a strong brand identity and positioning

    • Establish distribution channels to reach the target market

    • Implement marketing strategies to create awareness

  • Answered by AI
Round 5 - Case Study

Estimate the market size of high-speed internet line for home connections in 2030.
About the new internet line: 1 GBPS, fixed line, cost: Rs.300: 400

About the existing internet line: 100-200 MBPS, optic fiber, cost: Rs. 2,500: 3,000

Will require a completely new infrastructure.

Target consumers: home connections (OTT users)

He asked me not to start with the population of India (was looking for a non-conventional approach) and he did not want numbers, rather just the approach.

I started with income group and number of OTT users.

In which city between Mumbai and Jaipur would it make more sense to launch the service and why?
As the population density and the target audience of the high-income group is higher in Mumbai, it would be idea to launch the service in Mumbai.

I: Let’s do a guesstimate. We are concerned with passenger vehicles. We want to know what the expected number of EV sales in India by will be 2030.

C: Asked for growth trend or any data available.

I: Currently 2.7 Mn annual passenger vehicles are sold. Out of this about 15k are EV. We are expecting 10% growth in annual passenger vehicle sales in next 5 years and 8% growth in further next 5 years.

C: Considered this data to prepare an approach. Segmented number of vehicles based on below and above Rs.10 lac. Further divided into less and more premium, considered EVs in premium segment and then used the growth % here.

Round 3 - Case Study

Skoda wants to enter Indian Market with EV. How would you proceed?
[Please note that I stands for Interviewer and C stands for Candidate]

C: Asked initial scoping questions. Where are their current operations based and why India?

I: They have EVs in Europe, USA and see India as a lucrative market.

C: Is there any particular model or particular segment/ price range at which they are aiming?

I: Not decided yet.

C: How does the current scenario look like in India?

I: Many manufacturers like Tata, Honda, Hyundai, etc. have already started making hybrid vehicles and EVs.

C: Do they plan to import vehicles or manufacture in India?

I: Manufacture in India.

C: Prepared a framework with 3 main buckets: overall industry, competition, and company (like further analysis of what the company does well, bad, etc.). [Please note that I stands for Interviewer and C stands for Candidate]

C: The Sponge iron industry is scattered. Since, I was not familiar with the industry, hence asked more questions to understand what process was followed at the plant: input, process, output.

I then developed an approach based on industry level framework. I provided an overall framework with various buckets that would be relevant like demand, supply, legalities, market growth, etc.

I: What other issues can there be in the industry?

C: I touched upon substitutes, price, future usage, etc.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: I had prepared a structured answer for each of the above questions. We had a very long discussion on internet services and mobile services. The interview lasted close to an hour and a half.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Asked for more information on the company like- Is it a manufacturing co., or an IT co.? What do you mean when you say Operations and Roadmap? Any financial restrictions? What is the final objective of the co.? She said the company was a mobile operator like Bharti and that I should concentrate on the co.’s IT department (I knew nothing of IT and thought everything was over. I told her upfront that I do not have an IT background but I would try my best.). She asked me to ask her relevant questions. When I asked her about what she meant by roadmap, she probably missed it. Twice she asked me the first question that I should be asking. I didn’t ask the meaning of roadmap again thinking it might work against me. Then she finally said that I should ask what she meant by ‘roadmap’. She said the company wants to move from point A to point B and asked me how the company should go ahead. She also said that the company wants to complete 100 projects to reach point B in 3 yrs. I then tried to structure the problem. “On one side, we have the current capabilities/resources of the company and on the other, capabilities/resources required to successfully execute the 100 projects. We basically have to fill in this gap to achieve our objective.” She was pretty happy with this simple structure. Then I listed the areas that we should look into like- Financial resources and Human Resources. Under fin. resources, I talked about the funding part and under HR, I talked about hiring, firing and training of employees. Then I talked about increasing the effectiveness of the execution- through performance-based pay and several reviews of the projects to modify the strategy if required. Then she told me that there are several departments in a co. like Bharti, such as IT, Marketing, Operations etc. She asked me to list 5 different profiles of employees in IT and marketing separately. These types had to be unique (specialist positions). For example, when I said CMO under the marketing department, she disagreed. Under IT, I came up with Software developer, Hardware ppl, IT maintenance, Architect, Analyst. I took some time to come up with ‘Architect’. Used 4 Ps for coming up with the types under Marketing (Product Manager, Pricing Manager, Segment manager, Advertising people, Market researcher). She seemed satisfied with the solution.
I was quick to figure out what she did not like in people (she hates it when people use words they do not know the meaning of). From then on, I started asking her everything I didn’t understand fully and she appreciated it. Though I did not have an IT/telecom background, I answered all her questions and could engage her in a conversation on her fields of interest (telecom/internet). I asked her a lot of questions that she said were good :).
Tips: Ask a lot of RELEVANT questions. The interviewers like it. Be confident.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I started by saying that we could measure success of the service by estimating the profits or the revenues. He asked me to go ahead with the revenues. I asked the population of Kuwait, mkt penetration, % handsets that are 3G enabled. I assumed the population and mkt penetration to be const. throughout the year. He was ok with the assumptions. From the above data, I calculated the number (say x) of potential users (of the new service) among the co. B customers. I asked him the current ARPU. I then asked what % of it was voice usage and what % was data related. I asked him the average minutes of usage/month/user. From the data, I could calculate the $ value of voice usage charge/minute. For the video calls, I said we can charge 50% premium over the voice usage charges. I divided the users into 2 segments- business and residential. I asked what % of ‘x’ were business users and what % were residential users. I also asked their minutes of usage per day or week. It was simple Math after that. He asked me about the assumptions that were made in the case. I listed 3 of them (like no switching of customers from A to B etc). He also discussed about how the pricing should be done. I gave him 2 answers- one as a CFO of the co. and the other as a CMO of the co. A CMO would use unmetered pricing to facilitate higher penetration of the new service whereas a CFO would use metered pricing to get back his investments.
Tips: Do not ignore PI. Have good reasons to work for the co.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Your client is the COO of a regional telecom player in the Middle East. The COO has asked you to prepare an operations roadmap for the next 2-3 years. These are the steps that I took:
• Clarify what is meant by operations roadmap: Was told it includes marketing, sales, retail stores operations, IT, Network and Customer Care
• Asked a few more questions and found out that the main problem was prioritization of projects that COO had in front of him with limited resources.
• Focused on how to setup a portfolio structure to allow the COO to staff and execute projects.
Couldn’t get the particular insights that the interviewer was looking for. She wanted me to use certain words! So even though I was saying the same thing, she wanted it to be said in a particular way. Got lost half-way through the case where I just kept fishing for words to meet her expectations.
Tips: Think simply and take a step back when stuck or ask for help from interviewer. You have to get used to the interviewer style very quickly in an interview.
