Your seniors at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai helped you with their notes. Now they're helping you with their placement interview questions. 🙏
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Was resume shortlisted, nothing great about that. Tips: Keep up the CPI, but I guess it's too late for that now.
Round: Test Experience: Test wasn't too difficult. Can be cracked if you're in your game and have a chill mind. Tips: General aptitude preparation should be started atleast before a month from placements. Solve GATE papers, institute placement tests, read CAT modules and their tips for faster problem solving. English needs time for those who haven't used it much in their childhood. But still the difficulty level of questions in these placement tests is easy.
Round: HR Interview Experience: Was generally good. Interviewer was young and we could connect. Tips: It is extremely important that you remain calm. You need to tame that nervousness down. Think of the interview as a general talk with a stranger. Be your natural self. That's when the ideas hit you for the questions you haven't prepared. Practice interviewing with friends and read about the most common questions on the Interwebz.
Round: Puzzle Interview Experience: Problems were easy. Asked for a pen and paper and slowly solved them. Tips: Practice puzzles. There are some good sites for this.
Skills: Managing people, Analytical thinking College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Test Experience: it was a basic test, CAT level questions and can be easily cleared Tips: keep your cool, don't panic Duration: 60 minutes Total Questions: 60
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Firstly by loking at seniors resumes, taking advice from Phd students in our LAB and from experts also. Yes, I attended many, but the intention is to know the details of different companies , their products and visions.
Round: HR Interview Experience: Since I am from village background, and never had serious interview, to make it success, I have taken a mock before final interview with some Phd and sponsored (from defence and QIP) who well experienced and best at facing such interviews. It short listed approx 15 people, and taken 5 ,
General Tips: He should be good at basics of power systems and bit of programming knowledge very help College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: First I did it based on my previous experience of making resume wherever I had applied for jobs. Then I also looked at how others students are doing it. Then I modified my resume wherever I felt appropriate (sequence of information etc.) as per these.
Round: HR Interview Experience: It was a direct interview. Final offers were given to 5 people. First stage was technical . Out of some 14 – 15 candidates, 5 were shortlisted as I remember. Then HR interview was conducted.First I was asked about my education, experience etc. Then about my M Tech project. Thereafter, Power systems related qus. After that something very basic from related subjects (Digital electronics, Programming etc.) Tips: For interview, I prepared on my own. I read some technical stuff related to field of work / job profile of the company. Although we may able to answer general (non technical, personal ) qus on the spot, I think its better to prepare that thing also a little bit .
General Tips: In GD of one of the companies, I lacked aggressiveness which was reqd. in presence of other too aggressive students appeeared in that group. Also in aptitude test of some other company, I should have guessed some qus, instead of thinking too much on the difficult qus. Dressing should be descent and formal. But don't have too much attention or worriedness. Have a peace of mind. Don't think too much about your failure in previous interviews , other students comments and complexes arising out of that. This will reduce ur confidence in the things you are good at College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Probably the best way to start off is by taking a well formatted resume and building on those lines. Try thinking of everything that you’ve done and then prioritize. Lots of tips on the net on resume writing / sample resumes etc. Vault guides are pretty useful, not only for resume, but for interview prep on the whole. Make sure you send ur resume out to others for suggestions. That’s a good way of improving on it. No need to cram with excess stuff. Keep it plain and simple. Avoid excessive bold / italics etc. Be prepared to be grilled on any point u’ve mentioned. So should know ur resume in and out. I did attend ppt for companies that I was interested in. Ask questions during / after the ppt to have a clear idea of the role being offered. Spoke to a few ppl that knew about the profile that I was interested in, helped in understand the profile. I doubt if you'll be able to pin point what you want, but will definitely help you filter out other options.
Round: HR Interview Experience: Interview 1: with a fixed income trader. Asked me stuff on my resume and why I actually wanted to get into i-banking. Was honest with him that didn't want to continue with tech, and that growth curve is pretty steep. Last but not the least, pretty lucrative career. Asked a little more on my resume. Basic questions. Then asked me what I knew about i-banking. Was pretty satisfied that I had a general sense of what it was all about. Then probed into my finance knowledge. Asked me a few questions on how to price bonds etc. Risks associated with bonds. Eg if interest rate rises / falls how does it affect. Asked me a few questions on options. Simple call / put payoff curves, and then gave me a combination of calls / puts and asked for the payoff. Basic stuff not very complicated. Then general conversation. Very relaxing interview!
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: Interview 2 & MD of fixed income Asia &; Pacific. Directly started off with particular points on my resume. Had done a course project, so asked a bit on that. Asked if I was ok answering finance questions. Said yes. Asked me what options are. How do they work. Gave me two scenarios &; one risky asset, one non-risky asset. Which call option would be more expensive? Which put option would be more expensive? Got slightly confused here, but pulled back in the end. Asked me to roughly estimate future foreign exchange rate if interest rates of two currencies are given. The interview was over before I knew it. Asked if I had any questions. I had a few which he answered for a good 5-10 minutes. Think that saved the day!
Round: Other Interview Experience: Interview 3: As soon as I sat down, asked me to estimate the volume of the room. In cubic meters. Then cubic feet. Then cubic inches. Made one calculation mistake with the order of magnitude, but was otherwise reasonably quick. Then asked me to calculate the number of matches in a 128 player KO tennis tournament. Its pretty simple to sum it up, but with such questions, they're looking for a short-cut. Asked me a puzzle on a camel which has to cross a desert and transport a maximum number of bananas. Some constraints don't exactly remember. I had heard this so was asked another one. There are 20 prisoners. Each of them has a number on the back between 1-20. There can be more than one prisoner with the same number. Prisoners meet to discuss (before numbers are placed on their backs) a strategy such that at least one can guess their number correctly. They do not meet again. Asked me to come up with the strategy. Was given exactly 3mins to get this. Then moved on to resume. Asked in detail about internship. Again why i-banking. Few HR questions such as to what drives you, instance when you did not achieve your target. Asked me that if I had a good trade idea, sales ppl do not accept it, what would I do. Could have answered this one better. But had done reasonably well otherwise. Asked me my preference between HK and Singapore. I had a couple of questions and that's about it. Didn't even realize that I had been inside for 45 mins.
General Tips: Well, some basic fin background helps in my opinion. Although UBS didn't expect much fin from me, but helped me to convey enthu. Can work for you if you can pull off the questions. Otherwise practice a few puzzles, calculation based numericals etc. And like any other interview & your resume and HR. Should have a few questions in the bag to ask. College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Started out with learning to identify and portray the focal points in a resume companies are looking for. Then went on to list my achievements (big and small) over the years, and the qualities they reflect about me(the hardest part!!). I then selected the 4 I wanted to put forward, and wrote my resume accordingly.
Round: Test Experience: Written Technical test ; 30 out of ~ 200 short-listed 2 Rounds (1 Tech + 1 (Tech + HR) ; 15 out of 30 short-listed 2 rounds (1 Tech + 1 Group Activity) ; 5/6 out of 15 selected. Test was pure coding syntax. Do not come just prepared with just algorithms! Work in one language and master the syntax. The first tech round was some basic programming problems & - Eliminating the originating node in a very large circular linked list in the least computational time. Sorting algorithms - Some basic Inheritance
Round: HR Interview Experience: The second round was an HR round supposedly. We discussed my work in the startup I was in, and then went on to the system design for the same. Later, He tried to put me off-track with a simple guesstimate (no of petrol pumps in Bombay), and ended with a simpler puzzle (Rectangular plate with an arbitrary rectangular hole to be divided into 2 equal halves).
Round: Technical Interview Experience: The third round was more technical with some more basic algorithm problems & - Traversing a 2 - dimensional array in a spiral fashion - Syntax of commands in C (the language I had chosen for the test, others were Java and C++) - OOPS concepts
Round: Group Activity Experience: The fourth round was a group activity where a team had to build a model building with straws, come up with a marketing campaign for the same, and make a presentation of the same at the end of the day.
General Tips: Prepare your programming language syntax well. That is where most people loose out in the written tests. - The people here are not looking for very high tech stuff, just some basic programming skills and very basic algorithms, so go through concepts like the unique features of OOPS, differences between Java and C++ etc. Read through basic algorithms &; they like to refer algorithms by their names. - Do not show in the interview that you are looking for working on cutting edge stuff etc. This goes for all I-Banking IT. Focus more on brand name etc., and possible client and business Interaction(seems they love it !) College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Went through a few sample resumes to get some idea.
Round: HR Interview Experience: Candidates were short-listed on the basis of resumes and then there were three rounds of interviews. Ultimately ML recruited some 7-8 people for three different locations. Only two for Mumbai office I believe. As far as I know, some 10 people made it to the third round. The structuring of interviews was not exactly the same for everyone. People were being interviewed randomly by different panels. Round 1 (2 interviews): Mostly HR. Why ML? Your strengths, weaknesses? Any idea about the job profile. Why do you think you are appropriate for that kind of job? Some stuff about my projects. Round 2 (1 interview): Again HR. Family background. Why finance and not CAT n management? Grilled a lot about IIMs & wanted to make sure I was not interested in doing MBA immediately after BTech which I wasn't anyways. Surprisingly, no questions regarding my apping intentions.
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: Round 3 (1 long interview): Mostly about finance. Wanted to know how much awareness I had about the terminology. 2- 3 case-studies kind of thing. Again some stuff about the projects that I had done.
General Tips: Be prepared with typical HR questions. Sound convincing as to you want to do nothing but join ML. A little preparation for case studies will help for sure. Also go through the interactive DVD to get some idea about ML. That helped a lot. College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Group Discussion Experience: My experience was quite good. Being an Indian, I knew the problems faced in Kashmir (of course through newspapers) so I could follow the topic and could talk over this. Tips: Read newspaper so you will be aware of the issues going around in the globe and the GD topics are generally the current affairs. Do not try to dominate in the discussion, try to involve other people in the discussion too. Try to reach the conclusion towards the end of the discussion. Try to make the points which people will follow. Duration: 20 minutes
Round: HR Interview Experience: I applied for this company because it is a social enterprise and I was always inclined towards such work, so the questions asked were quite simple for me. I could interact with interviewer very well that boosted up my confidence. Tips: Do not blabber things. Highlight your qualities in "Tell us about yourself". Be confident. Try to communicate with the interviewer as if he is your friend ( but of course be professional).
General Tips: As I said earlier, "Do not be a part of this rat race, follow your passion". If you are not happy with the job profile then do not apply for that job. And if you are enthusiastic and passionate enough the you will definitely get selected. Skill Tips: Try to be yourself. Skills: Communication Skills, Passion , Teaching skills, Dedication College Name: IIT BOMBAY Motivation: Avanti Fellows is a social enterprise which gives high quality coaching for JEE and other competitive exams to the students who can't afford it. I always loved teaching and I am inclined towards social sector. Avanti gives me an opportunity to follow my passion in both teaching and social field. This is the reason I applied for Avanti. Funny Moments: I was so much enthusiastic and excited about the interview since it was my first interview that the interviewers could actually see my excitement. After my selection they called me up to have a talk with them and I started talking to them as if I knew them from years.
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: I made my resume in placement format which our placement team has given to us. Yes, I had attended PPTs. of most of the companies. Yes got idea about the company and the process of selection.
Round: HR Interview Experience: I followed geekinterview.com website for HR interview.
Skill Tips: Don't take tension College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Consulted the seniors/pass outs. Pre-placement talks helps in providing company profile and most importantly, the job profile of the candidate. It gives transparency of the selection procedure, compensation, etc. I attended every PPT from day 1.
Round: Group Discussion Experience: One should prepare in groups. Points on the resume should be articulate while reciting. So, talk to various people who can help you in interview/GD/Test.
Round: Test Experience: Writen test in the beginning. Followed by an interview where appox. 23 candidates were selected. Some 12 were selected for the second and final round of interview.
Round: HR Interview Experience: HR questions. Mostly based on hobbies and interests. It was fun in the interview session. Prepare HR questions and follow every word of your resume..One should be aware of every word documented in the resume.
Skill Tips: Cool, Calm, composed and articulate. College Name: IIT BOMBAY
