4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: technical interview
Experience: In the first round they started with basic question like “Tell me about yourself?” . The entire technical questions were basic from the two books I suggested above. He asked me about 4-5 questions related to my M.Tech thesis work. The interviews went only for 20-25 min.

Round: TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
Experience: The second round was also based on basic and about 20-30 min.Third round was about 40-45 min in which all the question were based on resume. He asked me on every point which I have mentioned in my resume. He also asked to write algorithm related some basic puzzles.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: I was asked basic HR questions.

General Tips: Final Tips :
1. Resume plays the most important role in the selection. Make sure that you prepare well for the points you are writing in your resume.
2. Identify the companies you want to target. Be pragmatic in your choice and prepare accordingly.
3. For the aptitude problems form a group of people who are targeting same or relevant companies and discuss various problems. It will help you in understanding concepts/problems in less time.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: When I reached the interview room of Opera, they informed me that they were impressed with my CV and I that had a good chance there.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: It was based on puzzles and machine learning questions. They told me that I had almost made it, and only a final formality round with a person from US was remaining. Between those interviews I got a call from GE saying that they are done with all the remaining candidates and if I didn’t reach there in 10 minutes, they’ll pack up and leave. I had to make a tough decision between continuing with a company that I had a good chance at or go for a company that I didn’t wish to join. I politely told them that I am busy with other companies and hence I won’t be able to come.

Round: telephonic interview
Experience: I had the 4th and the final telephonic round with Opera towards the end of Slot1, which was to judge whether I was really interested in working at Opera.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Behavioural Interview
Experience: After the 4th round, they told me that they were making me an offer, and that was a big moment of relief for me.

General Tips: Prepare well for the GDs’ and interview because, a good CV only takes you to the interview and becomes irrelevant after that. Only preparation matters in selection. Also, prioritize your sectors based on your interest, and profile. Be realistic and practical while doing this. Also, If possible, keep one or two options ready beforehand (Ph.D., MBA, civil services, startup/family business) in case you are not able to crack a good job as it prevents you from getting panic. Also, if you are shortlisted in multiple companies in a single slot, do take a friend with you to manage everything. Never be overconfident if you have a very good CV. There have been various instances where many so-called high profile people have struggled with placements due to lack of preparation. Also, do not waste your time preparing for all the sectors, as you won’t be able to become a master in any of them.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: aptitude test
Experience: The aptitude test consisted of verbal, analytical and numerical questions with sufficient time to answer the questions.

Round: Technical test
Experience: The technical test contained questions from almost all the compulsory courses that you may have studied over the past four-five years, mostly conceptual though but there were some numerical questions as well.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There was a group discussion on the topic ‘Is quality a myth in India? ‘ to eliminate a few students and the rest were selected for the final interviews.

Round: technical interview
Experience: Interview lasted for about 25-30 minutes. They started by asking about my interests and backgrounds and then came directly into questions related to my areas of interests. They asked questions about torque transmission through a shaft, I-beams, stress-strain and buckling and a little background about my thesis followed by one basic question related to it. The final 10-12 minutes were spent in discussing the questions that I had asked the interviewers and it also helped in lightening the mood, so I would suggest be ready to ask the interviewer a few questions to show that you are genuinely interested
During the interview questions were asked mostly from my areas of interests and a little about my thesis and internships. But it is important to know one or two courses very thoroughly.

General Tips: Do’s and Don’ts :
● Do not take GD’s lightly, I ignored it till the very last moment and did my first GD on the night before the actual GD. It is a shortlisting criteria for many mechanical engineering core companies and you wouldn’t want to lose out there.
● Read about your thesis and internships properly. Many of your interviews would revolve around that only.
● Select one or two major courses and prepare them thoroughly, you may be asked about the courses that you liked at IITK followed by some questions related to it.
● Practice explaining your projects and HR questions with someone.
● Get to know a little about the company before the interview. You may drop that information somewhere during the interview to show your interest. Also be ready to ask a question at the end.
● Don’t copy answers to HR questions from the internet, write your own and try to remember the key points.
● Don’t lose heart if you are not shortlisted or not selected. There are a lot of other options.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: INTERview
Experience: Interview for Engineer Profile, and then was redirected for Data Scientist Profile

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Interview for Engineer Profile, and then was redirected for Data Scientist Profile
My interview of “Data Scientist” profile went nice but was slight uncomfortable at giving answers to the puzzle questions at the end of the interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Final HR round went very smoothly and was a fun.
It was always a surprise for me as I was getting short listed. In the end of the HR interview when I was asked if I had any questions, I just said that I in the very beginning made a clear mention that I want to pursue research career ahead and so would go for higher studies as well. I am grateful that you have short listed me for final round but if get an offer from you then I will give you the confirmation only in March end as this is the time when the result for PhD admission will come. Also if I go for a PhD then it would seem to be that I have taken away the position which someone could have got if placed. They had a simple reply that they hire on the basis of quality. I had research which was completely unique and may be no one(students) in India does it and this made me a bit special on national scale(which is my guess ). They liked my frank and honest way of dealing. And they had a clear mind that if they were not selecting me for that profile then they were selecting no one, and thus I didn’t have any replacement. They said that wherever I go, I should spend at least an year there, where again I poked that the confirmation I can give only in March end, to which they had no issues.

General Tips: Be honest, have a preparation of what you have written in your resume, at least consult a senior that which profile suits you the most based on your resume. There is no such compulsion of giving your interview only in English, give your interview in whichever language you are comfortable with, combination of 2 languages is also allowed.

Round: technical interview
Experience: My first interview was held at 9 PM. First round : It was first interview after oral test in school, so you can understand the situation. But the interviewers were people of age between 25-27, as I entered the room he started talking like an IITK-senior. He started with friendly chit-chat and then shifted to asking about my resume and other questions.

Questions :
1. Algorithm to retain median of an integer stream.
2. There is a river and there are stations with same station no. on both side of the river. A bridge can be build between the stations with same station no. and two bridges shouldn't cross each-other. Given a configuration of the river and stations give and algorithm to print maximum no bridges that can be build.

General Tips: Do’s :
1. Set you priorities for core and non-core first and prepare accordingly.

Duration: 30 minutes minutes
Total Questions: 15

Round: Test

Duration: 30 minutes minutes
Total Questions: 15

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I was first asked about my resume, intern etc. followed by why not PhD. I was asked some simple puzzles from tech-interview.

Round: Case Study Interview

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: You are not supposed to know everything. If you do exceptionally well in one or two sections in each paper and even leave third section completely (which I did) then you are through. Third section was mainly for CSE guys. In subjective part Algorithm section had 5 questions and maths section had 4 questions. Questions in maths section were based on probability, linear algebra, differential equation and discrete maths. Randomized algorithm course taught by Baswana sir was really helpful in doing probability questions. Questions were doable if you knew the concepts well. For algorithms part concepts taught in basic Data structure and algorithm course were enough. Questions were based on linked list, binary tree, stack, queue, sorting, Dijkstra etc.
Duration: 75 minutes minutes

Round: Test
Experience: Each section in objective paper had 10 questions and there was negative marking. On the basis of test they selected 75 candidates.
Duration: 75 minutes minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I was asked about my thesis 3-4 times as I had done some good work in Thesis and had submitted 2 paper based on it. Also as my work was on (Data Compression) Information theory which involves a lot probability and the problems I worked on was of theoretical nature, so I was able to relate it with them. So it was one of my plus point. They asked some questions from topics related to my thesis.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: They asked some algorithmic puzzles and some probability and other maths puzzles. At no point of time I was asked to write the code (but it totally depends on the team they are looking you for) I just had to tell them how to solve the problem.
Tips: Don’t hurry in interview and take your time to solve the problem. Also at every point keep interviewer engaged and keep telling him in which direction you are proceeding and also why you are doing this.

General Tips: Start preparing from summer itself. If you are targeting quant companies I will advise you start preparing even before for probability and puzzles as you can’t become good in these things overnight. I am not saying you to give 1 -2 hour daily for puzzles rather I will advise you to do just 1-2 puzzles whenever you have time and enjoy it.

Don’t leave everything for the last time you will for sure run short of time so finish the important tasks first. Make goals which are practically achievable.

Skill Tips: Focus on your Study.. Revise the subject that you have studied at the time of Interview
