Stuck in a 2-Year Bond Agreement with a Product-Based Startup
I'm seeking advice on my current situation. I joined a product-based startup as a fresher, expecting to work as a developer. However, I've been assigned testing tasks for a product that's been in development for X years.
My tasks include:
- Compiling code in GCC or other compilers
- Identifying errors and reporting them to the team
- Performing repetitive testing tasks
I'm concerned that I'm not learning or growing as a developer. With 1.5 years left on my 2-year bond agreement, I'm worried about my future prospects. How can I transition to another company without acquiring new skills or working on meaningful projects?
If I ask my current employer about the mismatch between my expected role and actual tasks, they overwhelm me with complex tasks that I'm not equipped to handle.

If you feel your role isn’t aligned with your goals, politely communicate with your employer about your expectations. Meanwhile, invest time in upskilling through platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or freeCodeCamp to keep your learning curve sharp.

You can approach your employer again but this time with solutions show them how you’ve upskilled and can handle development tasks. Employers are more open to discussions when you show initiative

I understand how tough this situation must be for you. Testing might not feel like growth, but it’s a chance to learn the backend of product development. Meanwhile, focus on your own learning and aim for what excites you.

Testing isn’t entirely bad, but I get your concern. Use it as a foundation to explore testing automation and gradually shift to dev skills. Once the bond ends, you’ll be in a better position to choose your career path.

Talk to your manager about gradually transitioning into development tasks while showing initiative. Simultaneously, focus on building coding expertise outside of work.
