JOB PURPOSE

• - Working together with the Engineering Director and Principal Engineer, set the technical direction for our infrastructure, ensuring that it continues to scale to support our growth in a cost effective manner.
• - Expert with the tools used to manage our infrastructure and CI/CD systems
• (Terraform, GitHub Actions, scripting language)
• - Understand and learn to become expert with the full extent of our technology stack and their application; AWS (RDS, ECS, EC2, S3 and Lambda), Cloudflare, Redis, DNS, Docker and the rest of the infrastructure platform.
• - Responsibility for a platform that is secure, resilient, scalable and cost effective
• - Make use of, maintain and improve our observability tools such as DataDog and AWS CloudWatch to ensure the continued health of the platform, to troubleshoot any abnormal performance and be able to identify the underlying causes.
• - Respond to incidents affecting the platform, including being part of the on-call rota.
• - Ensure that our disaster recovery and incident response are regularly exercised and improved. Design new exercises informed by industry practices such as gamedays, chaos engineering, etc.

LEAD DevOps Engineer

Build A Devops Culture workplace:

- Own the developer experience; improving the process of developing, testing and continuously deploying the application so that it's safer, faster and easier for engineers to work on.

- Be expert in the principles of CI/CD, ensuring engineers can always deliver high quality services to production

- Empower software engineers to understand how to get their code into production, and how to identify and debug performance issues.

- Support software engineers by pairing, teaching, mentoring, coaching, reviewing code and demonstrating the practices of an effective engineer.

- Be a subject matter expert for infrastructure and operational concerns in the team.

Leading the DevOps practice:

- Define and manage the platform engineering decision-making process

- Define, improve and manage our out-of-hours process. Ensuring engineers on the rota are well prepared when responding to incidents.

What Does Success Look Like?

- Experience architecting and supporting cloud-native web application infrastructure.

- Experience working with containers and schedulers (we use Amazon ECS). - Experience using automated config management systems to manage and version infrastructure (Terraform).

- A deep understanding of Linux, networking and security.

- Experience supporting database administration and performance, taking into account scalability and maintainability.

- A keen interest in automating processes and improving the developer experience.

- Experience working closely with software engineers in an agile environment. - A good understanding of git and how to use version control to effectively structure and communicate your work.
