Role & responsibilities


1. Safety Planning and Implementation

  • Safety Programs: Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs, ensuring that they align with industry standards, company policies, and local regulations.
  • Risk Assessments: Conduct thorough safety risk assessments for new projects, processes, equipment, and materials to identify potential hazards.
  • Safety Procedures: Draft and enforce detailed safety procedures, ensuring that all employees are familiar with operational risks and safe work practices.
  • Workplace Safety Plans: Create specific safety plans for different work areas (e.g., drilling rigs, refinery operations, pipeline maintenance) tailored to unique risks associated with each.

2. Training and Awareness

  • Employee Training: Develop and conduct safety training sessions for all staff, including hazard recognition, emergency response procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
  • Inductions: Provide safety inductions for new employees, contractors, and visitors to familiarize them with site-specific hazards and safety protocols.
  • Emergency Drills: Organize regular emergency response drills (e.g., fire drills, evacuation drills, and spill response) to ensure that all personnel are prepared for potential incidents.
  • Toolbox Talks: Conduct daily or weekly toolbox talks to reinforce safety practices and discuss any new risks or updates to safety regulations.

3. Safety Inspections and Audits

  • Site Inspections: Regularly inspect all on-site equipment, machinery, and work areas to ensure that safety standards are met and that hazards are controlled.
  • Safety Audits: Perform safety audits of operations, identifying any deviations from safety protocols and recommending corrective actions.
  • Equipment and PPE Inspections: Ensure that all safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, fall protection systems, and PPE, are in good working order and accessible.
  • Hazardous Materials: Monitor the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials (e.g., chemicals, gases, flammable substances) to ensure proper safety measures are followed.

4. Incident and Accident Investigation

  • Incident Reporting: Ensure all incidents, accidents, near misses, and unsafe acts are reported immediately and recorded in the company's safety management system.
  • Accident Investigation: Investigate any safety incidents or accidents, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and identifying root causes.
  • Corrective Actions: Recommend corrective actions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, and follow up to ensure that these actions are implemented.
  • Documentation: Prepare detailed incident reports, ensuring that findings and recommendations are documented and communicated to management and relevant stakeholders.

5. Compliance with Regulatory Standards

  • Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Regulations: Ensure that all operations adhere to local, national, and international health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Permit-to-Work Systems: Oversee the implementation of permit-to-work (PTW) systems, including hot work, confined space entry, and working at heights, to ensure proper procedures are followed.
  • Liaison with Authorities: Act as the point of contact with regulatory bodies and ensure that any required inspections, certifications, and audits are completed.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain records of safety inspections, audits, incident reports, and safety training for regulatory compliance and internal audits.

6. Emergency Response Planning

  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency response plans, ensuring that all employees know how to respond to emergencies such as fires, explosions, gas leaks, or oil spills.
  • Emergency Equipment: Ensure that emergency equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire suppression systems, spill response kits, and first-aid supplies, are available and maintained.
  • Coordination with External Agencies: Coordinate with external agencies (e.g., fire departments, medical teams, environmental agencies) for emergency preparedness and response planning.
  • First-Aid and Rescue: Ensure that designated first-aid and emergency response teams are trained and ready for any incidents requiring immediate intervention.

7. Continuous Improvement of Safety Culture

  • Safety Culture Advocacy: Foster a strong safety culture across all levels of the workforce, encouraging a mindset where safety is the responsibility of everyone.
  • Safety Meetings: Organize regular safety meetings to discuss safety performance, share best practices, and address any safety concerns or improvements.
  • Behavioral Safety: Promote and implement behavioral-based safety programs to encourage workers to engage in safe practices through observation and positive reinforcement.
  • Employee Engagement: Involve workers in safety decisions, encouraging reporting of unsafe conditions, near misses, and potential hazards.

8. Reporting and Documentation

  • Safety Performance Reporting: Prepare regular reports for management on safety performance, including accident statistics, safety audit findings, and ongoing safety improvements.
  • Regulatory Submissions: Submit required safety and environmental reports to regulatory authorities, ensuring that the company is compliant with all legal requirements.
  • Safety Records: Maintain up-to-date records of safety inspections, audits, training programs, and incident investigations.

9. Safety Equipment and Maintenance

  • Equipment Handling: Ensure that all employees use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the tasks and risks involved.
  • Safety Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that all safety equipment, such as fire suppression systems, gas detectors, and emergency shutdown systems, is regularly inspected, maintained, and tested.
  • Safety Signage and Labels: Oversee the installation and maintenance of safety signage, including hazard warnings, emergency exits, and evacuation plans.

10. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Integration

  • Environmental Risk Management: Work closely with environmental specialists to ensure that safety measures align with environmental protection protocols.
  • Waste and Spill Management: Oversee the safe handling and disposal of waste, hazardous materials, and chemicals, ensuring proper spill response and containment procedures.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Participate in the development of initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving sustainability in operations.
