Interview Questionnaire

1 Question

  • Q1. Can you calculate the number of auto-rickshaws in any city of your choice?

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: Partner had been told to test me on case. During Q&A, I asked him about how Mckinsey treats innovation (since I come from an R&D background). He found the Q different. Was able to engage with him on that and had a healthy chat. My second Q completely resonated with him. I asked him how Mckinsey treated candidates with above avg exp. To that he talked about his own story (had joined consulting after 10 yrs industry exp.) and how it just changes the ramp rate. This question set up a good rapport between us and I could sense some good vibes at the end.

Recommended Approach
I took my time to come up with a structure. Start with population of city, segment it into 2 parts working professionals and non-working people (housewives, students, etc) I suggested I would estimate the # of people in each segment and then estimate the total # of rides they would take and based on the average time taken for an auto ride, I will find the total # of autos in the city. Sameer was OK with this plan. I started with Mumbai and said Sion and ahead autos were not allowed. So I suggested we should use only 50% of the population (around 7.5 million) to estimate # of autos. He was pleased that I used some practical knowledge also. From there on it was relatively straightforward. One place I made an assumption that 15% of working professional would use an auto. He wanted to know how I made this assumption. I realised that was a mistake on my part to make such an assumption. I then split the working professional segment to different income classes and then put a % for each to figure out how many from each sub-segment would take an auto.

The final # for working prof segment came around 50000 autos (assuming around 30min for a one-way ride, and on average 50% of autos have a single passenger and 50% have 2 passengers). He told me to double it to include the other segment. He asked whether this 100K was a reasonable estimate and what single question I would ask to see if this was reasonable. I was suggesting Qs which would not directly answer and more elaborate. Finally I suggested we could look at # of taxis in the city to get a comparable. He wanted one more question. At this point I was drained out. He helped me arrived at the question. (look at another city with comparable population) In retrospect these look trivial but I was unable to think so simple.
Tips: DONTs: Do not make assumption without any reasoning behind it. Don't think complicated. Keep your though process simple. Most of the times the interviewer is asking for fundamental stuff, nothing complicated

DOs: Lay out the structure especially in guestimate with as much detailed layering as possible before you crunch the #s. The interviewer will tell you how much detail he wants you to focus on. Engage the interviewer in the discussion as at every point he might give you some data to simplify your calculations.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They short listed about 22 students. They had 2 rounds of interviews. I was not able to make to the second round. In the first round I had 2 interviews. In both interviews a case study was given and some HR questions were asked. In my first interview the interviewer gave me a case of a steel industry. It was like that my industry had 2 places from where I can procure my raw material and I had to decide which place is better. I did pretty well in this interview. HR questions included about my academic achievements, why not research, my experience as Mess secretary etc. You will always enjoy giving interview to a consultancy firm because this people make you very comfortable. Though it was my first interview but I was not nervous at all. In my second interview I screwed up my case. The case was about a company which is earning lots of profit and is now looking for new fronts to invest the money. I started talking about vertical integration and horizontal integration in the same field in which company was operating. But in the end interviewer told me that he expected me too look into different new ventures like real estate etc. Though I was not shortlisted further but I enjoyed a lot my first interview.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I took help from my elder brother for preparing my resume as well as for subsequent revisions – regarding points to be included and formatting. I mentioned about the academic scores in school and college, qualities, achievements, special interest in dancing and athletics, activities/cells/societies I have been a part of (Placement Cell, Choreography Club). I also mentioned about my internship with HDFC Bank.
150 students applied for written test.

Round: Test
Experience: Written test consisted of 2 sections.

First section consisted of a passage. Students were asked to write its summary within 150 words and to give a suitable title to their summary. Time allotted was 30 minutes.

Second section had multiple choice questions. The questions were mostly of senior school level. Total time allotted was 90 minutes.

10 questions from verbal ability and logical reasoning (questions related to sentence correction and grammar)
20 questions from quantitative ability (topic included were profit/loss, percentages and data interpretation)
Business general knowledge (questions were based on current affairs of companies like mergers, major projects undertaken by them etc.).
56 students got selected after the written round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: It was a one on one interview. Here the interviewer tested you on all the fronts. Following questions were asked:

1. Tell me about yourself and your family.

2. Why would you like to join McKinsey Knowledge Centre?

3. Where do you see yourself after 5 years?

4. How do you see yourself doing in McKinsey Knowledge Centre?

5. Tell me about your educational background.

25 students cleared the first round.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: It was again one on one interview round. My question consisted of two parts. In 1st one, they wanted to see my thought process and logical reasoning skills and in 2nd part, they stressed more on my ability to analyse numerical data.

My question was “How many forms do you expect to sell in Sri Venkateswara College in the year 2013”

So in my 1st part I told them that i would refer to the previous records i.e. no. of application forms in the previous years (last 3 years), the percentage increase in the forms every year as well as the increase in cut off.

In 2nd part, they told me to work on estimates (assuming population to be 1.8 million and then estimating the no. of % of student (age 17-20) in the whole population and so on.

Another case study given to my friend was to estimate the number of auto rickshaws in a city.

Round: Other Interview
Experience: Unlike my other fellow mates, the interviewer took me for a walk in the garden. She was telling about how the company actually functions. It was a half an hour talk wherein I mostly listened while she talked.

College Name: SRI VENKATESWARA COLLEGE, DELHI UNIVERSITY
Motivation: I researched about the company from its official website – their work environment, selection procedure, their culture, business, reputation etc. Pre –Placement talk helped me to know more precisely the job description they are looking for, company’s internal management and salary and perks they were offering.
On 1st day, they conducted a written test where students were asked to submit their resume along with their answer sheets. On the 2nd day, there were three rounds of interviews.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I took help from my seniors for preparing the resume regarding points to be included and subsequent revisions and formatting. I mentioned about the academic scores of +2 and college, qualities, achievements, special interest in dancing and athletics, position of responsibility in school and college.
150 students applied for written test.

Round: Test
Experience: Written test consisted of 2 sections.

1st section consisted of a one page paragraph. Students were asked to write a summary of it within 150 words and to give a suitable title to their summary. The time allotted for the same was 30 minutes.

2nd section had multiple choice questions. The questions were mostly from class 11th and 12th syllabus. Total time allotted was 90 minutes for the same.

10 questions from verbal ability (questions related to sentence correction and verbal reasoning)
20 questions from quantitative ability (topic included were Profit/Loss, % increase or decrease, data interpretation)
Business General Knowledge (questions were based on current affairs of companies like mergers, major projects undertaken by them etc.)
56 students got selected after the written round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: It was a one on one interview .It lasted for 10-15 min. Following questions were asked:

1) Tell me about yourself and your family.
2) Why aren’t you pursuing post-graduation?
3) What is the difference between McKinsey Knowledge Centre and McKinsey & Company?
4) Are your parents fine with the break you are taking in your studies?
5) Why do you think we offered you the post of Junior Analyst and not that of a team leader?

Questions based on my resume were also asked. Since my core area of study is Maths (H), almost all the questions in the interview round (including the case study to a certain extent) were from my core subject areas.

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: It was again one on one round. My question consisted of two parts. In the 1st part, they wanted to see my thought process and logical reasoning skills and the 2nd part included numbers mainly to check my calculations.

They asked me to choose a mall of my choice and then gave me the case situation as:

Suppose you were to open a PVR Cineplex in the particular mall then answer the following questions:

What all things will you consider?
Estimate the profits for the first year of operation.
In the 1st part I told them I would consider:

The demographics of the people who visit the mall (age/financial background/social strata)
This would tell what type of movies can be screened (sensitive issues, romantic, action movies, Hollywood etc.)
To maintain the quality of service since if majority of customers are from upper middle class then they will not be very price sensitive but would care more about the quality of service.
The price of the tickets can be comparatively high.
In 2nd part, I had to work on my estimates – percentages and probabilities (assuming high demand for tickets on weekends rather than week days, keeping prices high on weekends etc.)

I was asked to solve the case study on the blackboard and had to explain the same to the interviewer. The interview lasted for 20-25 minutes.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: In this round, there were two interviewers. I was given a pen and a paper to solve sums. Initially i was given three tables.

A. 1st table consisted of some values and I was asked to find percent increase or decrease.

B. 2nd table had revenue and cost figures and I was told to find out “which product has maximum selling price?”

C. 3rd table contained sales figures and I had to find maximum increase or decrease of in sales of any product by looking at it (pen and paper wasn’t allowed)

Few mental mathematics questions were asked like 23x25, 45x48 etc. In the end, few personal questions came from the interviewer like:

Are you comfortable with the working schedule of 12 – 14 working hours per day?
What are your hobbies?
For how many years do you wish to work for McKinsey Knowledge Centre?

College Name: SRI VENKATESWARA COLLEGE, DELHI UNIVERSITY
Motivation: I researched about the company from its official website – the qualities they are looking for in a candidate, selection procedure, lines of business etc. Pre –Placement talk helped me know more about the job profile, qualities they are looking for in a candidate, company’s management and salary and perks they were offering.

I missed out few options but the interviewer was satisfied I discussed those options I had put forward at length.
