  • Q4. Why Oil and Gas Sector?

  • Q6. Questions related to IOCL's Products.
  • Q7. Give us a brief overview of petroleum refining process.
  • Ans.

Petroleum refining is the process of converting crude oil into useful products like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

    • Crude oil is first heated and then sent to a distillation tower where it is separated into different components based on their boiling points.

  • Q8. Some more technical questions related to VDU, CDU, LOBS.
  • Q9. Some questions related to Heat Exchanger Design and its maintenance.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Everyone who had a CGPA of 6.5+ with no live backlogs got shortlisted.

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: The Panel comprised of 4 members (Electrical + Mechanical + Chemical + HR). The interview started with some general HR questions and then they asked questions to check how much I knew about the Oil & Gas Sector and especially IOCL. I was unable to answer questions about Diesel Specifications produced by IOCL.

I had done my summer training at an Oxygen Plant in SAIL so they asked me questions related to the process of separation of oxygen from air and purity of oxygen required in the Steel Industry.

Then I was asked questions related to design of Heat Exchangers and it's maintenance. After that, some very basic questions about distillation column (reflux ratio, use of steam etc) were asked. These questions were pretty straightforward.

Then, they asked me to describe the complete refining process and as I was explaining the process, in-between they asked me questions like: why desalting/dehydrosulphurization is required, why steam is used, effect on product quality on increasing/decreasing reflux ratio, why VDU is needed. These were also very easy questions if you have taken any course related to Petroleum Refinery Engineering.

The last person then gave me a scenario in which I was the shift incharge and there was a major malfunction (fire, leakage) in one of the important equipments?. I was asked to draft a plan according to which I was supposed to take steps.

Tips: Try your best to convince the panel that you are planning to stay in the company for a long time. Justify your passion for Oil and Gas sector.

If you are from chemical engineering stream, thoroughly revise the petroleum refining process as most of the questions will be related to crude distillation.
