Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There were 10 candidates in each group and I guess there were around 5 such groups, and all are from chemical engineering department. Group discussion for the GG students were held separately. Duration of the group discussion was only 5 min and so each candidate will get a chance to speak for less than 1-2 min. During the GD I made good conclusion which was also supported by the whole group which gave an added advantage to my points. GD's with my batch mates really helped me because discussing with your friends gives you broader perspective, better understanding of the topics, get to to know your weaknesses, reduce fear and stress during the GD's.The Key is ' be confident, put relevant points and try to convince the group in a smart way'. FInally only 2 students from each group got shortlisted and around 12 students were selected for the final Technical & HR Interview.
Tips: Be updated with the recent topics and better to do some group discussions with your wing mates or batch mates. This really helped me. Do not shout in the GD, put your points in smart way and make a good conclusion... :)
Duration: 5 Min minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: My Interview started with ' Tell me about yourself' and then they grilled me on my internships. I did my third year Intern in Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd. Q1. What are the different types of pumps and their parts? (Centrifugal, positive displacement pumps and their parts) Q2. Different types of valves and their application? (Like gate, globe, butterfly, Non return valves (NRV)- check valves, ball valves etc.) Q3. Calculation of pressure drop through a pipe in turbulent flow (Not hagen poiseuille equation,it is for Laminar flow)
Q4. Pinch temperature Q5. Temperature profiles for cold fluid and hot fluid in cocurrent and counter current heat exchanger. Q6. Advantages of counter current heat exchanger over co current heat exchanger. (Other than LMTD, Check DQ Kern)- Ans. Hot fluid outlet temperature can go below cold fluid inlet temperature in counter current HEx which is not possible in case of co current HEx.
Q7. JT Expansion. MY 4th year internship was in U of S, canada where I developed two processes for manufacturing of glycerol carbonate and propylene glycol using Aspen hysys. They asked me regarding mass, energy balance (utilities) involved in the process and how I applied pinch analysis for the processes.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: My resume had a couple of projects and a paper publication added to it, which was a part of my second year intern at TCS Innovation Labs.

Tips: I believe that the resume shortlist to appear for the test is just a formality and not a big deal to get through. Most of the students are allowed to appear for the test which is where, the main shortlisting occurs.
Although, the company does cut off people from certain departments. For example, none of the Agriculture and food engineering students were shortlisted for appearing for the test.
Also, from what I have heard, the company runs resumes through a program to take out the shortlist. Hence, certain key words such as "Scholar" or "Conference" may get you a good chance to get through the shortlisting.

Round: Test
Experience: The test is mainly quant based and how fast you can think and rationalize. They expect excellent speed; they ask you 20 questions to be answered in 30 minutes.
Tips: Normally, if a student is asked to appear for this right after his JEE examination, he would be able to get through it easily. But since our analytical thinking goes way down once we actually get in, it has to be worked upon again. I'd suggest you to solve all the quant questions of any CAT preparatory book for the American Express test. The test questions are quite similar to those that the CAT students prepare for.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: In general, the American Express interviews are considered to be pretty peaceful compared to the interviews of other companies. I was just asked about my work at TCS Innovation Labs and the paper I would be publishing based on that work and the courses I have done in Data Analytics and what all do I know in it. They do not test the knowledge you say you possess.
Tips: While I was preparing for my interview, I was told to read about Amex and its products. Secondly, and most importantly, I was aksed to read a lot about credit card frauds and suggest ways of preventing that. Even during my time, a lot of people were asked about this and judged severely on that. This is a must must if you would be appearing for its interview.

Also, you would do well if you are able to connect with the interviewer. For instance, if both of you have been a part of the same inter IIT or have the same tastes, etc.

Also, the interviews are that peaceful that you are able to direct the interview in your favour. There are certain parts of your CV that you can easily talk about and certain parts that you would want to avoid. If you are able to think on your feet, it is easy to re direct the interview in your favour and the things that you would like to talk about; in my case, it was my work at TCS.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: The main decision whether you have to be taken in or not is decided in your first round of interview after which, the puzzle interview is just a formality and to find out whether you are able to think on your feet or not. Not a big deal, pretty easy.
Tips: Nothing to be worried about, the puzzles asked are pretty easy and most probably, you would have already heard them if you have a nag of solving puzzles.

General Tips: Do not worry or stress yourself much. The interview is pretty easy if you have an edge in the skills that the company wants. I had started studying Data Analytics in my second year summer vacations, just 1 hour a day for hardly about a month. Which gave me enough of an edge. The main hurdle lies in getting through the test round where about 300 people are simply cut off.
Skill Tips: You should be able to code efficiently. Knowledge in Python and SQL is a big plus.
Also, I had done a course on Coursera called "Machine Learning" of Stanford University. Today, the company does not expect a lot of knowledge in Data Analytics from students which is why this course gave me the edge I needed to get through the interview. It's a pretty easy course and not very demanding. I would recommend this if you want to find out even whether you'd be interested in Data Analytics or not.
I was asked about the things I know and whether I have ever implemented them.
Skills: Analytics And Coding
Duration: 2
College Name: IIT Kharagpur
Motivation: American Express is known to have a good working culture and is currently the third best company to work for in India. The internship stipend is largest compared to any other company in India along with accommodation and travel. The company has a well structured internship program and also has good challenging work to offer.
Funny Moments: After the test, I was not shortlisted for the interview round.. Which broke my heart.
Just after the presentation, I walked up to the person presenting and handed him a hard copy of my resume asking him to at least give me a shot at the interview if they think my profile is good enough.
I believe that this was a turning point of this entire experience. I believe, at that moment itself, I gained their favour to take me in. Which is probably why my interview was peaceful, which is probably why I could get through even though my interview was the last among a bunch of 25 students..

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had an experience of an internship at ITC Limited and that helped a lot. My Resume was perfect for a FMCG company and hence it helped me get shortlisted. A modest CGPA criteria of 7 was also set.
Tips: Your Resume should have some kind of an internship experience. An experience in a manufacturing plant will certainly help you a lot.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: We were given handouts to read the case and also to look at the questions in the end. The group was expected to discuss on the problems that the company was facing and then to answer the concerns(questions) in the end that were given.
Tips: The recruiters were not looking for people who start the GD or who end but the people who let others speak and who moderate the discussion. You are not supposed to give some out of the box solutions but are expected to work in a team on the implementation of the same.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Resume shortlist, I believe, depends firstly on your department of Engineering. People from Departments like Agriculture and Food Engineering were not shortlisted in spite of being open to all departments. So unless you have something in your resume that stands out in respect to their job profile, chances of getting shortlisted are very slim.
Tips: Have a neat resume. Consider adding skills such as OOPs languages, any related courses that you might have done or a POR that has something to do with the kind of profile they are offering.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The first round was a resume shortlist, which I think was on the basis of programming and coding courses (and projects) taken along with your CGPA. Out of 10 shortlisted people, I knew 4 and all of us were 9 pointers. The rest who I didn't know turned out to be 9 pointers as well! :P
Out of 10 shortlisted people, 3 (including me) were from ECE and the rest were from CS. Even though InMobi was open for Mathematics & Computing, no person from MnC dept. was in the shortlist. (Presumably due to their CGPAs or some other criterion that I'm not in the knowledge of.)
Tips: i) High CGPA is a must (We're talking above 9, at the end of 2nd year for CS/ECE and 3rd year for MnC)
ii)Taking programming and algorithm courses and projects is important, as that must be visible in your resume.

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: One special thing about the interviews, you're asked not to wear any formals! That actually helps in taking the tension off of things!
It's simple logic, after that. Increase the lift's speed (taking in mind of the safety), collecting usage data, optimising the lift's floor-stoppage according to that.
As told after the interview, the interviewer is just observing how you think and approach a problem.

One odd thing was not being asked about any coding/algorithm questions even though the profile was for a software engineer.

After this question, I was asked if I had any questions to ask. I simply stated that the work environment and culture affected me as much as the profile I'm applying for. Thus, the drive and motivation of the people who work there is also very important. So I asked what are the companies' values which the employees believe in, too.
Tips: Stay confident, don't let any tension get to your head.
In the future, InMobi may start asking coding questions too in the interviews. or change the selection procedure, which will be communicated in the PPT of InMobi.
Whatever may happen, the first round should show your zeal to solve problems, your creativity in trying different approaches, and applying logic to find the best solution.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: OK! There were a lot of questions asked since the interview was more like a conversation taking place. Like in ANY conversation, keep proper eye contact, smile and be approachable for any questions. Show enthusiasm in your voice and your answers. The interviewer asked me questions about
i)My resume, and all the activities that I'd listed there. (eg: Why did you enlist in this course? Do you like coding?)
ii)Why programming, how does it interest you?
iii)Basic questions about InMobi, like 'What do you know about us after attending the PPT?' and 'Why InMobi'

Since I had done quite a lot of marketing activities, I was also asked about that. Will you do an MBA in the future? What all did you do for marketing? I had a strong background in digital marketing, and we had a little chat about mobile marketing and what's the future of mobile advertising.
Tips: Smile, for god's sake! It's a conversation about you, do all the basic things to improve the conversational experience.
Small things like greeting the interviewer, smiling, proper eye contact, and speaking properly are paramount.

Like in any HR interview, make sure you know yourself and your resume properly, so that you don't phase out in the interview when asked some 'unexpected' question. (since that's when they know thatyou might be lying/exaggerating). Hence introspect enough before sitting the interviews.

General Tips: Make sure you're able to convince yourself and the interviewers for why do you want to work in Inmobi Technolgies.

I've already shared the rest in previous sections! :)

2 people out of 10 were selected for this internship experience, so make sure you prepare well! All the best! :D

Skill Tips: I don't think that this adds on as a skill, but InMobi wants to create a huge impact on the mobile world and the mobile advertising sector.
Your knowledge about this sector in general could help you strike good conversations (at least in the HR round).
Skills: Logic, Problem Solving Abilties, Creativity, Communication Skills
Duration: 2.5
College Name: IIT Kharagpur
Motivation: I'm a gadget geek from my childhood. The mobile industry amazes me as it's been the biggest change-bringer in the modern world. InMobi as a company wants to create a huge impact in the mobile advertising space and mobile advertising! And seeing their products that they offer in this domain had me thinking that they're doing something unique and awesome!
The work culture of InMobi is just amazing, right from flexible work hours to the epic office they have in Bangalore full of awesome people working towards that one goal! Also, InMobi offers their employees opportunities to shift between various verticals if they want to. All of this (along with a good compensation ;-) ) was enough motivation for me to apply!
Funny Moments: When I was asked whether I was in the third year, I said yes, and then said, usually people think that I'm still in high school!
We had a good laugh on that one! :P

Otherwise also, the entire procedure was relaxed and fun in general.

Interview Questions

  • Q1. Increasing profits and comparing the types of buses for operations
  • Q2. Problem on Customer Acquisition for Credit Cards
  • Q3. Checking the feasibility of a Credit Card Verification process
  • Q4. Analysing the operations of a Breakfast Restaraunt

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: This was a test based on Data Interpretation. There were 6 passages with various questions, Each passage had 2-3 charts which had to be analysed and then questions had to be answered on the basis of that. Because each passage had so many charts, anyone could easily be confused by the amount of data thrown at them, it is key to keep yourself calm and go through the questions without missing anything important. The devil is in the details.
Tips: Practice Data Interpretation Problems. I solved the CAT Data Interpretation book by Arun Sharma, The ten minute papers were really nice as they give a feel of the time constraints that you have in solving such a paper. You could also solve Data Interpretation Manhattan GRE.
Duration: 35 minutes
Total Questions: 30

Round: Case Study Interview
Experience: I had 4 case Interviews, The first case interview was a small one - It went on for about 15 minutes, The second was about half an hour long, the third was also half an hour long, and the fourth case was 1 hour long. It was a really nice experience. Key to cracking a case interview is to interact a lot with the Interviewer. Ask meaningful questions, Give logical hypothesis and feasible solutions. You can be slow, but do not make any math mistakes. Ask clarifying questions, Understand the problem correctly and then give answers, Do not hurry
Tips: for case Interviews - You should read Case in Point, other than that, you should see the sample cases given on Capital One's website, and read cases from IIM A,B , Wharton Casebooks.
