When Your Boss Thinks They Own Your Time

My POV I’m currently on a work trip, and honestly? It’s exhausting. Every meal, every outing, every spare moment is dictated by my boss. Yesterday, I tried to take a breather...skipped lunch to get some space...and guess what? I got a text: “I expect you there. See you in a bit." I didn’t go. When I got back, the passive aggression hit hard...the sighs, the side-eyes, the not-so-subtle comments about being a “team player.” I didn’t fight it. I just shut down. I get that work trips have some expectations, but does it mean giving up all personal space? I’m sharing a hotel room, showing up for every meeting, and still managing my regular workload remotely. But I can’t even skip a meal without being guilt-tripped? It’s frustrating. I’m tired of feeling like my personal time doesn’t matter. What would you do? Suck it up and go along with it, or push back and risk the backlash?

Ugh, I totally get this. It feels like bosses often forget that we’re human too, not just robots to be controlled during work trips. I've had similar experiences, where you’re expected to be on 24/7. Sometimes I just need a moment to breathe, but I get the same passive-aggressive comments. It’s draining.

It sounds like you’re doing more than enough already. Honestly, it’s okay to take time for yourself, and they shouldn’t guilt-trip you for it. I’d just have a calm chat with your boss and let them know that while you’re committed, you also need time to recharge. If they truly care about you and your work, they'll understand.
