Moderne raises $30M to solve technical debt across complex codebases
- Miami-based Moderne has sold series B stock worth $30m. The tech start-up is currently focused on codebase repairs which prevent 'technical debt' mounting up, making code more complex and expensive to update over time.
- Moderne uses OpenRewrite, an automated refactoring solution pioneered by company founders Jonathan Schneider and Olga Kundzich while they were in senior engineering roles within software firm Pivotal.
- The company also offers extra services, such as multiple-repository support, a web-based interface, analytics and reporting.
- Moderne has so far raised around $50m in funding and has manufacturer Allstate, Amex Ventures, Morgan Stanley and Intel among its venture capital backers. Several of the investors participated in series B.
- The company also said it was branching out to provide better support in the specialist area of application security.
- Founder Schneider said Moderne's automated services were an ideal way to cope with what was a major problem across the software industry and the $30m funding boost would better allow it to extend its offering.
- With OpenRewrite being key to its operations, Moderne had benefited from the large language model revolution and the move to 'ai' reflected Moderne's AI-centric activity.
- Moderne's customer base included blue-chip companies such as Walmart and Allstate, though some customers had as few as six developers on their platform.
- Once the process of updating, securing, consolidating and improving code is complete, technical debt still remained a regular issue, Schneider said, as the tech stack was 'constantly evolving'.
- Technical debt is the result of prioritizing speed over quality and the long-term sustainability of processes. It results in a software ecosystem that's more complex, costly and vulnerable. Miami-based startup Moderne has raised $30m in a series B funding round to tackle this problem by offering code modernization, and support for multiple-repositories, analytics, and reporting. The OpenRewrite ecosystem by Moderne is an automated code refactoring service that offers a powerful framework to scale the process within an enterprise. Files are analyzed, security vulnerabilities are rectified, and older technology is migrated to cloud-native environments. Moderne also offers excellent support for collaboration via a web-based interface and more complex workflows.
