Salary Increment after Probation – How to Maximize Chances?

I joined my current company 3 months ago and I’m currently in a 6-month probation period. During the interview, the interviewer mentioned that salary increments after probation are rare, but there’s a slight chance if performance is exceptional. I want to know — is there any practical way to maximize my chances for a salary hike after probation? Also, would it be a good idea to search for new jobs and use an offer to negotiate a raise with my current company? Or would that backfire during the probation period?
