Hey everyone, I had a salary discussion with HR at EY for a Senior Consultant role in Bangalore. While I expected 23 LPA fixed, she offered only 18 LPA fixed, stating that Java is not a niche skill. My Background: • Experience: 5 years (Banking domain and Payments) • Current CTC: 15.5 LPA (15 fixed + 50K variable) •Tech Stack: Java 8, Spring Boot, Microservices, Kafka, REST API, PostgreSQL •Certifications: Oracle Certified Java 8 (Associate & Professional) Negotiation Points: •Found 23 LPA as the average salary for this role on Glassdoor & AmbitionBox •Highlighted banking domain experience & certifications •HR argued that the 23 LPA average includes Cloud, DevOps, Hadoop roles, which are more niche Final Offer: ✅ 20 LPA fixed(she told she will try for it) ✅ 4 LPA variable ✅ Joining bonus (not confirmed yet) ➡ Total CTC: 24 LPA + bonus Question to the Community: 1️⃣ Was 23 LPA fixed a reasonable ask? What’s the ideal package for my profile? 2️⃣ Could I have negotiated better?

20 LPA fixed for 5 years of experience in Java seems slightly low, given the demand for microservices & Kafka. Maybe you could have pushed for a 22-23 LPA fixed?

EY’s argument about niche skills is valid to some extent, but Java+Banking+Kafka isn’t exactly common either...Maybe next time, highlight your domain expertise as a differentiator.

Java might not be ‘niche,’ but financial institutions prefer stability & domain expertise. If EY won’t pay, maybe fintech startups or banks might offer more?

20 LPA + 4 LPA variable… bas variable ka calculation dekhna, kahin year-end appraisal ke baad hawa na ho jaye. Have they confirmed how achievable it is?

If the final offer is 24 LPA + bonus, it’s decent but not great. If you’re okay with stability, go for it. If not, keep looking - the market is still hot..

Java not a niche skill!? She must be living under a rock. Tell her that you arrived at this number by doing a good market analysis on the payscale of Java devs with 5+ years of experience . Also, keep trying other opportunities. You can definitely land a job which pays you 28LPA+ easily. Try for Product Based consulting/ Startups. I know Razorpay uses Java for backend and can offer you 30LPA+ if you crack their interview. Keep trying and all the best.
