National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) boldly goes where no one has gone before. The federal agency's Aeronautics division conducts research on new flight technologies while its Exploration Systems works on human and robotic exploration and its Science unit studies climate, gravitation, and the atmosphere. The Space Operations division mans and maintains the International Space Station in conjunction with several other nations; it also ran the space shuttle program until that was retired in 2011. NASA was founded in 1958, partly in response to Russia's launch of the Sputnik satellite, to research space and flight technology. It successfully landed two Americans on the moon in 1969.

55 Years Ago: Preps for Apollo 13 and 14, Apollo 12 Crew on World Tour
- With two months to go before the Apollo 13 mission in April 1970, the crew and backups continued training and preparations for the lunar landing mission in the Fra Mauro highlands region of the Moon.
- Engineers at Kennedy Space Center completed the Flight Readiness Test for Apollo 13's Saturn V rocket, clearing the way for a countdown dress rehearsal.
- Apollo 13 astronauts practiced lunar landing and moonwalks using simulators and training vehicles, while the Apollo 14 crew participated in geology field trips for their upcoming mission targeted for October 1970.
- Training included Lunar Landing Training Vehicle flights for descent practice and Lunar Landing Research Facility sessions for landing module pilots.
- Moonwalk training involved parabolic flights, rehearsal of deploying equipment, and improving spacesuits for comfort during extended spacewalks.

Elon Musk calls for International Space Station to be deorbited by 2027
- Elon Musk has called for the International Space Station (ISS) to be deorbited as soon as possible, perhaps by 2027.
- The ISS is aging and was planned to be deorbited in 2030, but Musk suggested it should be done by 2027, and SpaceX was awarded a contract to deorbit it in 2024.
- Musk's statement has raised concerns since the international partners, such as the European Space Agency (ESA), expect the ISS to remain in orbit until 2030 or beyond.
- Musk's desire to end the ISS earlier may be driven by his focus on Mars missions and freeing up resources for it.
