‘Race to the border’: Manufacturers scramble under Trump’s looming tariffs

The company generates a quarter of its revenues outside the US, including from Canada. News of the new tariffs also impacted global manufacturers such as World Emblem, the biggest producer of patches for clients including Levi Strauss and Co.The trade shock overshadowed factory activity, which had previously expanded last month for the first time since 2022. The past four years have also seen duties enacted, shrinking factory employment and declining industrial production.

Lawyers have called for specific details on how companies will be affected. Levi Strauss wins P138-M tax case
- The Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) ruled in favor of Levi Strauss (Phil.) Inc. II, canceling taxes worth over P138 million issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for 2012
- The court's Second Division found that the BIR violated Levi Strauss' right to due process during the tax assessment process by not considering the company's defenses and evidence submitted in response to the Preliminary Assessment Notice (PAN).
- The CTA cited that failure to adhere to the requirements of informing taxpayers in writing and considering their submissions constitutes a denial of due process.
- The assessment notices for deficiency income tax, final withholding value-added tax (FWVAT), expanded withholding tax (EWT), value-added tax (VAT), and improperly accumulated earnings tax (IAET) were reversed and set aside by the CTA.
