‘Race to the border’: Manufacturers scramble under Trump’s looming tariffs
- President Donald Trump’s threat of new tariffs leaves manufacturing businesses scrambling for cover. After a one-month hold on the Mexico and Canada duties was put in place on Monday, executives of North Carolina-based Power Curbers were still on watch for additional tariffs. The company generates a quarter of its revenues outside the US, including from Canada. News of the new tariffs also impacted global manufacturers such as World Emblem, the biggest producer of patches for clients including Levi Strauss and Co.The trade shock overshadowed factory activity, which had previously expanded last month for the first time since 2022. The past four years have also seen duties enacted, shrinking factory employment and declining industrial production.
- The process behind the tariffs has added to uncertainty as President Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Lawyers have called for specific details on how companies will be affected. This sudden shift towards Trump's proposed tariffs is cause for concern as some imported materials may become more expensive, impacting imports from Canada and Mexico, with tariffs beginning to rise up to 10% on Chinese goods. Tariffs will probably reverse the nascent trend in manufacturing sector, reflecting broad trade uncertainty. Industry leaders must remain vigilant and brace for impact.

Levi Strauss wins P138-M tax case
- The Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) ruled in favor of Levi Strauss (Phil.) Inc. II, canceling taxes worth over P138 million issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for 2012
- The court's Second Division found that the BIR violated Levi Strauss' right to due process during the tax assessment process by not considering the company's defenses and evidence submitted in response to the Preliminary Assessment Notice (PAN).
- The CTA cited that failure to adhere to the requirements of informing taxpayers in writing and considering their submissions constitutes a denial of due process.
- The assessment notices for deficiency income tax, final withholding value-added tax (FWVAT), expanded withholding tax (EWT), value-added tax (VAT), and improperly accumulated earnings tax (IAET) were reversed and set aside by the CTA.
