Staff Nurse (Emergency)

Role & responsibilities

• Assess and triage patients to prioritize treatment based on severity of illness or injury.
• Take vital signs, obtain medical history, and document relevant patient information.
• Perform a rapid head-to-toe assessment for acute conditions.
• Administer medications as prescribed by the attending physician.
• Provide wound care, bandaging, and other basic medical procedures.
• Assist in performing life-saving procedures like CPR or defibrillation.
• Monitor patients continuously for changes in condition, especially those in critical or unstable condition.
• Keep accurate and detailed records of patient progress and responses to treatment.
• Prepare and assist in diagnostic tests and imaging.
• Communicate effectively with doctors, specialists, and other healthcare staff to ensure optimal patient care.
• Coordinate with family members to explain the condition, treatment, and progress.
• Ensure the patients comfort through empathetic communication, providing pain management, and meeting emotional needs.
• Ensure safety protocols are followed to minimize the risk of accidents or further injury.
• Provide mental health support to patients and families in high-stress situations.
• Respond quickly to medical emergencies, including trauma, heart attacks, strokes, and other critical conditions.
• Set up and assist with emergency procedures, such as intubations or administering oxygen.
• Adhere to strict hygiene and infection control protocols to prevent the spread of infection.
• Properly sterilize medical instruments and ensure proper disposal of contaminated materials.
• Maintain detailed and accurate medical records for each patient, including nursing assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
• Update patient files and communicate with the healthcare team regarding any changes in condition or treatment.

Skills:

• Proficiency in medical procedures, including wound care, intravenous therapy, and administering injections.
• Ability to make quick, informed decisions in high-pressure situations.
• Analytical thinking to identify and treat conditions effectively under time constraints.
• Clear and concise communication with patients, families, and medical teams.
• Emotional intelligence to empathize with patients and provide psychological support.
• Ability to work long hours, often in a physically demanding environment, including standing for extended periods, lifting patients, and responding quickly to emergencies.
• Keen observation skills to detect subtle changes in a patients condition.
• Accuracy in administering medications and maintaining medical records.
• Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, other nurses, and support staff in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications:

• Clinical experience, particularly in emergency, trauma, or intensive care nursing is highly desirable.
• Previous work in a high-pressure medical environment such as an ER can be a significant asset.
• Active and valid nursing license to practice in the state
• Degree in Nursing
