Position Overview :

The Lead Underwriter plays a crucial role in the underwriting process by assessing and mitigating risk, ensuring the lending portfolio remains sound while supporting business growth. This individual will lead and mentor a team of underwriters & Analysts, provide technical expertise, and make final decisions on complex or high-value loan applications. The role requires a strong understanding of lending policies, market trends, and credit risk, combined with leadership and decision-making skills.

Key Responsibilities :

Underwriting Decisions:

- Build an underwriting framework to drive business growth with limited risk

- Work with partners to build joint underwriting capabilities and rules to drive business growth

- Review and approve or decline complex loan applications based on thorough risk assessment.

- Analyze financial statements, credit reports, business plans, and other relevant documents to determine borrower creditworthiness.

- Make final decisions on loans that exceed standard underwriting criteria or involve high-risk factors.

Risk Management:

- Assess and mitigate risks by evaluating creditworthiness, collateral, market conditions, and other relevant factors.

- Recommend risk-adjusted terms and conditions based on underwriting analysis.

- Stay current on lending regulations, trends, and market conditions to ensure compliance and competitiveness.

Collaboration with Stakeholders:

- Partner with sales, credit, and operations teams to ensure smooth loan processing and documentation.

- Communicate underwriting decisions, exceptions, and conditions to internal stakeholders and clients.

Lead and Manage Underwriting Team:

- Supervise, train, and mentor a team of underwriters/Analysts to ensure effective and efficient underwriting practices.

- Set clear performance goals and ensure consistent quality standards for underwriting decisions.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field. A master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CFA, CBA) is a plus.

Experience:

- 7-10+ years of experience in commercial lending, with at least 2 years in a leadership or senior underwriting role.

- In-depth knowledge of credit analysis, financial statements, loan documentation, and regulatory compliance.

- Proven track record of making complex underwriting decisions and managing high-value loan portfolios.

- Strong understanding of risk management principles and practices.

- Strong leadership abilities with experience managing and motivating a team.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working with diverse stakeholders.
