Role & responsibilities

The Dean of Agriculture serves as the academic and administrative leader of the Faculty of Agriculture, overseeing the academic programs, research initiatives, faculty development, and student affairs within the school. The Dean plays a key role in ensuring the facultys continued excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement, particularly in addressing contemporary challenges in agriculture and rural development. The Dean will provide strategic leadership to strengthen partnerships with industry, government, and the broader agricultural community while advancing the university’s vision for sustainability and food security.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Leadership:

  • Lead and manage the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in Agriculture, Agricultural Sciences, and related fields.
  • Foster an academic environment that emphasizes quality education, student engagement, and academic excellence.
  • Ensure curriculum remains relevant and responsive to global agricultural challenges, sustainable practices, and technological advances in the field.
  • Promote interdisciplinary learning and research across related domains such as environmental sciences, agronomy, horticulture, animal science, and agricultural economics.

Research and Innovation:

  • Oversee and promote high-quality, impactful research in agricultural sciences and related fields, encouraging faculty to address current issues like climate change, food security, sustainability, and rural development.
  • Develop strategies for securing research funding, establishing partnerships with industry, governmental agencies, and international organizations, and promoting faculty and student-led research initiatives.
  • Create a culture of innovation and collaboration within the faculty, encouraging faculty members to engage in cross-disciplinary research and entrepreneurship.

Strategic Planning and Development:

  • Lead the strategic direction of the Faculty of Agriculture, including long-term planning for academic programs, faculty development, and institutional growth.
  • Drive initiatives to enhance the faculty’s reputation nationally and internationally by building and strengthening collaborations with key stakeholders, including agricultural research institutions, industry leaders, and government agencies.
  • Advocate for the integration of sustainable agricultural practices and technologies into the curriculum and research projects.

Administrative and Financial Management:

  • Oversee the financial health of the faculty, including managing budgets, allocating resources effectively, and ensuring the responsible stewardship of public and private funds.
  • Ensure efficient administration of faculty operations, including staffing, facilities management, and adherence to university policies and accreditation standards.
  • Recruit, retain, and support a diverse faculty and staff, fostering an environment that values teaching, research, and service excellence.

Student Affairs:

  • Champion student success through effective academic advising, career counselling, internships, and experiential learning opportunities in agriculture and rural development.
  • Ensure a positive and inclusive learning environment, supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Develop and implement programs that enhance employability and career advancement for agriculture students, including engagement with industry partners for internships and job placements.

External Relations and Community Engagement:

  • Serve as the primary ambassador for the Faculty of Agriculture, representing the faculty at national and international conferences, workshops, and other academic and professional gatherings.
  • Establish and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, including agricultural industry partners, government agencies, international organizations, and alumni.
  • Develop and promote initiatives that connect the Faculty with the agricultural sector and the wider community, including outreach programs, agricultural extension services, and public policy engagement.

Placements and Career Services:

  • Oversee and facilitate the placement process for students, working closely with industry partners to identify placement opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with corporate partners and recruiters to ensure high placement rates for graduates.
  • Organize career fairs, pre-placement training, and mock interviews to prepare students for industry roles.
  • Ensure that placement data and trends are regularly analysed and used to inform curriculum design and skills development programs.
  • Establish alumni networks and mentorship programs to support current students professional growth and career prospects.

Admissions:

  • Oversee the admissions process for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs within the Faculty of Engineering & Technology.
  • Develop strategies to attract high-Caliber students by collaborating with marketing, outreach programs, and high schools/colleges.
  • Ensure a transparent, merit-based admissions process that aligns with the university's policies and standards.
  • Promote diversity and inclusivity in student admissions and ensure the representation of underrepresented groups in engineering.
  • Monitor and analyse trends in admissions, retention, and student success, making recommendations for improvement.
