Job Title: Lead Data Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join our dynamic team, focusing on Databricks-based solutions, cloud technologies like Azure, and robust data pipeline architectures.

As a Lead Data Engineer at EXL, you will be responsible for the design, development, and deployment of data systems, pipelines, and data architecture solutions using Databricks and Azure cloud services. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end solutions that support data-driven decision-making at scale. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, particularly in Databricks, SQL, Azure, and DevOps practices.

Key Responsibilities:

Design & Implementation of Data Solutions:

Lead the design, development, and implementation of scalable and performant data engineering solutions using Databricks on Azure cloud infrastructure.
Architect and build ETL pipelines and data processing workflows leveraging Databricks, PySpark, and other distributed data processing frameworks.
Develop robust SQL queries and data models for efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) from multiple data sources into Azure data storage and analytics environments.
Design and implement end-to-end data workflows that integrate seamlessly with Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL Database, and other cloud-based data solutions.

Data Architecture & Cloud Infrastructure:

Lead the development of cloud-native data architectures on Azure to support both real-time and batch data processing at scale.
Collaborate with cloud infrastructure teams to integrate Databricks with other Azure services like Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse, and Azure Event Hubs for optimal data flow management.
Apply best practices for cloud security, data governance, and scalability in the design and deployment of data solutions on Azure.

Data Pipeline Automation & CI/CD:

Drive the automation of data pipelines through the use of DevOps tools like Azure DevOps, Terraform, Git, and Jenkins to ensure continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) of data workflows.
Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) for automated deployment of data environments and services on Azure.
Set up automated testing and monitoring for data pipelines to ensure data quality, pipeline health, and error-free execution.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Management:

Collaborate with data scientists, data analysts, and business stakeholders to understand data needs and translate them into technical solutions.
Work closely with product owners and project managers to prioritize deliverables and ensure alignment with business objectives.
Lead troubleshooting efforts and support data engineers and analysts by providing technical expertise in resolving data pipeline issues and optimizing data workflows.

Mentorship & Best Practices:

Mentor junior data engineers and provide guidance on technical best practices, architectural decisions, and troubleshooting techniques.
Establish and enforce coding standards, version control practices, and documentation to ensure consistency, reusability, and maintainability of data engineering solutions.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer with a proven track record of designing and implementing scalable data architectures using Databricks, Azure, and SQL.
- Hands-on experience with Databricks for building distributed data processing pipelines and machine learning workflows.
- Extensive experience with Azure cloud services, including Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and Azure SQL Database.
- Expertise in building ETL pipelines and data workflows that support both batch and real-time data processing needs.
- Proficient in SQL for querying, data modeling, and optimizing large datasets.
- Experience with DevOps practices and tools such as Azure DevOps, Git, Terraform, or Jenkins for continuous integration/continuous deployment.
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in PySpark and Databricks for distributed data processing.
- Deep understanding of Azure cloud services and how they integrate to form scalable, secure, and high-performance data solutions.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates, or Azure Bicep.
- Knowledge of data governance, security best practices, and regulatory compliance in cloud environments.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, testing, and deployment automation in data engineering workflows.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certifications: Azure Data Engineer or Azure Solutions Architect certifications are a plus.
Familiarity with additional data processing frameworks or tools like Apache Kafka, Apache Airflow, or Kubernetes is a plus.
Experience in machine learning workflows or advanced analytics using Databricks or similar platforms.
Understanding of data privacy, security frameworks, and governance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
