Job Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Develop and Implement Safety Plans

  • Create safety plans and risk management strategies tailored to the specific construction site, considering the hazards related to the type of construction (residential, commercial, infrastructure, etc.).
  • Design safety protocols to ensure the protection of workers from common construction hazards such as falling objects, machinery accidents, and electrical hazards.
  • Develop and implement an emergency response plan specific to the construction site, including evacuation procedures, first-aid response, and firefighting protocols.

2. Ensure Compliance with Safety Regulations

  • Ensure that the construction project complies with local, state, and federal safety regulations such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), the National Safety Council (NSC), and local building codes.
  • Regularly monitor compliance with safety standards, including safety gear, equipment use, and environmental conditions.
  • Ensure that contractors and subcontractors are adhering to the same safety standards.

3. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential safety hazards on the construction site, such as working at heights, machinery malfunctions, electrical hazards, or exposure to toxic substances.
  • Develop and implement control measures to minimize risks, including proper barricading of hazardous areas, PPE usage, and safety procedures for high-risk activities.
  • Perform routine inspections to identify emerging hazards and ensure the site remains safe throughout the project lifecycle.

4. Safety Training and Orientation

  • Provide safety inductions for all new workers, ensuring they are familiar with the site-specific hazards, emergency procedures, and safety expectations.
  • Offer regular safety training sessions to address various construction-related topics such as fall protection, ladder safety, electrical safety, machine operation, and handling hazardous materials.
  • Conduct refresher training courses to ensure workers remain up-to-date on safety practices and any new safety regulations.

5. Daily Safety Inspections and Site Audits

  • Inspect the construction site daily to ensure compliance with safety protocols, including checking the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper machinery maintenance, and general site conditions.
  • Conduct detailed safety audits of equipment, tools, scaffolding, electrical systems, and machinery to ensure they are in safe working order.
  • Ensure that any identified hazards or safety violations are immediately corrected and that corrective actions are documented.

6. Accident and Incident Investigation

  • Investigate any accidents, injuries, or near misses on the site to determine their root causes and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
  • Document and report accidents and safety incidents to appropriate authorities and stakeholders, ensuring full compliance with reporting regulations.
  • Recommend corrective actions or safety improvements based on findings from accident investigations.

7. Emergency Response Coordination

  • Develop and coordinate emergency response plans for various types of incidents, including fires, explosions, natural disasters, medical emergencies, or hazardous material spills.
  • Ensure that all workers are trained in emergency evacuation procedures and know where emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and first-aid stations are located.
  • Oversee the availability and maintenance of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, emergency lighting, and personal alarms.

8. PPE Management and Enforcement

  • Ensure that workers are equipped with the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, gloves, goggles, ear protection, high-visibility vests, and fall protection gear.
  • Regularly inspect PPE to ensure it is in good condition and that it is being used properly by all workers.
  • Enforce strict PPE usage policies across the site and take immediate action if workers are found without required safety gear.

9. Monitor Contractor and Subcontractor Safety

  • Ensure that contractors and subcontractors adhere to the projects safety standards, and verify that their workers have received appropriate safety training.
  • Monitor the safety performance of contractors, ensuring they conduct their work in compliance with both legal and company-specific safety standards.
  • Organize safety meetings with contractors and subcontractors to discuss safety expectations and encourage collaboration on maintaining a safe working environment.

10. Ensure Safe Work Practices

  • Oversee the safe operation of equipment and machinery, ensuring that only properly trained workers operate heavy equipment like cranes, forklifts, and excavators.
  • Ensure that safe work practices are followed in high-risk tasks such as working at heights, trenching, or working around heavy machinery.
  • Monitor activities like hot work (welding, cutting), ensuring that appropriate fire safety measures are in place.

11. Health and Wellness Programs

  • Promote health and wellness on the construction site by implementing initiatives like hydration stations, providing access to first aid services, and promoting healthy work practices.
  • Manage the risks associated with construction site conditions such as heat stress, fatigue, or exposure to chemicals by ensuring proper rest periods, hydration, and protection from harsh weather conditions.
  • Offer training on ergonomics to reduce strain injuries due to repetitive or improper lifting techniques.

12. Documentation and Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate safety records for all inspections, training sessions, accidents, incidents, and corrective actions taken.
  • Ensure that safety documentation is up-to-date and readily available for internal audits or external inspections by regulatory agencies.
  • Track safety performance metrics, such as incident rates, near-misses, and PPE compliance, to identify trends and areas for improvement.
