Role & responsibilities


1. Develop and Implement Safety Programs

  • Design, develop, and implement safety policies and procedures tailored to the steel industry.
  • Ensure all safety programs are in line with industry standards and local regulations.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify hazards and put measures in place to prevent accidents.

2. Compliance with Safety Regulations

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal occupational health and safety regulations (such as OSHA in the U.S., or equivalent regulatory bodies).
  • Regularly review and update safety protocols based on the latest regulations and industry standards.
  • Maintain records of compliance and audits to ensure all safety activities are documented.

3. Conduct Safety Training and Awareness Programs

  • Organize and conduct training programs for employees to educate them about safety procedures, equipment handling, emergency protocols, and potential hazards.
  • Ensure that workers are well-informed about personal protective equipment (PPE), machine safety, fire safety, and proper manual handling techniques.
  • Conduct refresher courses and drills regularly to keep safety practices at the forefront.

4. Conduct Safety Inspections and Audits

  • Perform regular safety inspections of work areas, machinery, and equipment to identify hazards.
  • Inspect safety equipment like fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, and PPE to ensure their readiness.
  • Conduct internal safety audits to ensure adherence to safety policies and identify areas for improvement.

5. Investigate Accidents and Incidents

  • Investigate accidents, injuries, or near-miss incidents to determine their cause.
  • Prepare detailed reports and ensure corrective actions are taken to prevent similar occurrences.
  • Work with supervisors to conduct root-cause analyses and implement corrective measures.

6. Emergency Response and First Aid

  • Be responsible for developing emergency response plans, such as evacuation procedures, fire drills, and chemical spill protocols.
  • Provide first-aid assistance in case of injuries and manage emergency medical situations until professional help arrives.
  • Maintain emergency equipment and ensure all employees know emergency protocols.

7. Monitor Workplace Conditions

  • Regularly monitor the working environment, including air quality, noise levels, and lighting conditions, to ensure they meet safety standards.
  • Identify and eliminate or control potential hazards like excessive noise, toxic fumes, or equipment malfunctions.
  • Take corrective actions when unsafe working conditions are identified.

8. Promote a Safety Culture

  • Foster a culture of safety by encouraging employees to report unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Lead safety meetings and encourage open dialogue about safety concerns.
  • Act as a role model for safe work practices, ensuring that employees understand the importance of safety in the workplace.

9. Ensure Proper Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

  • Ensure that employees are properly trained in using personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets, gloves, goggles, ear protection, and protective clothing.
  • Monitor the proper use and condition of PPE and make sure it is replaced when damaged or expired.
  • Enforce the mandatory use of PPE in high-risk areas.

10. Liaise with External Safety Agencies

  • Maintain relationships with external safety agencies, regulators, and consultants to stay updated on safety trends and legal requirements.
  • Coordinate with insurance companies for safety audits and claims processes.
  • Represent the company during safety audits or inspections by external agencies.

11. Safety Data and Reporting

  • Maintain records of all safety training, incidents, inspections, and compliance documents.
  • Prepare regular safety reports for senior management, highlighting trends, incidents, and the overall safety performance of the facility.
  • Track safety performance metrics and work to improve the overall safety record of the facility.

12. Continuous Improvement

  • Continuously evaluate and improve the safety management system by staying up-to-date with industry best practices.
  • Recommend improvements to processes, equipment, or procedures to enhance safety.
  • Analyze accident reports and implement solutions to mitigate future risks.
