Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Everyone who had a CGPA of 6.5+ with no live backlogs got shortlisted.

Round: Technical + HR Interview
Experience: The Panel comprised of 4 members (Electrical + Mechanical + Chemical + HR). The interview started with some general HR questions and then they asked questions to check how much I knew about the Oil & Gas Sector and especially IOCL. I was unable to answer questions about Diesel Specifications produced by IOCL.

I had done my summer training at an Oxygen Plant in SAIL so they asked me questions related to the process of separation of oxygen from air and purity of oxygen required in the Steel Industry.

Then I was asked questions related to design of Heat Exchangers and it's maintenance. After that, some very basic questions about distillation column (reflux ratio, use of steam etc) were asked. These questions were pretty straightforward.

Then, they asked me to describe the complete refining process and as I was explaining the process, in-between they asked me questions like: why desalting/dehydrosulphurization is required, why steam is used, effect on product quality on increasing/decreasing reflux ratio, why VDU is needed. These were also very easy questions if you have taken any course related to Petroleum Refinery Engineering.

The last person then gave me a scenario in which I was the shift incharge and there was a major malfunction (fire, leakage) in one of the important equipments?. I was asked to draft a plan according to which I was supposed to take steps.

Tips: Try your best to convince the panel that you are planning to stay in the company for a long time. Justify your passion for Oil and Gas sector.

If you are from chemical engineering stream, thoroughly revise the petroleum refining process as most of the questions will be related to crude distillation.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: A lease is a contract and if in writing, would be governed by its terms and conditions. A lease gets terminated by flux of time. Otherwise the provisions of Section 106 of the Transfer of Property Act would apply. A lease for Industrial or agricultural purpose would be a lease from year to year and need six months notice while other type of leases would run from moth to month and can be terminated by fifteen days' notice. Their GM Law sitting on the panel probably was not aware about six moths' notice and he immediately summoned for the bare Act. On finding the answer correct he gave me a standing ovation and told me there and then that I was selected and I would receive my appointment letter. I did get the letter but did not join as by that time I had got selected for the post of Manager Law in Bank of Baroda and being from the banking stream then working for Dena Bank I opted to continue in the Banking sector.
