Your seniors at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai helped you with their notes. Now they're helping you with their placement interview questions. 🙏
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: First step involved writing down everything that I had accomplished in my tenure at IITB. Then, grading each point on the basis of accomplishment and innovation involved along with details in about 4-5 lines. Carefully went through 10 resumes from the previous year to get an idea of the prevailing format. Prepared a resume and got the feedback from 4- 5 people and then on the basis of the feedback finalized the resume. I attended the Pre-Placement talks of companies, I was interested in. It was a good exposure for understanding the skill sets and the values that companies were looking for in a candidate and the possible future paths in the organisation. The talks also helped in increasing the overall awareness about the different companies .
Round: Test Experience: a) Written DI based test with emphasis on interpreting graphs, calculating percentages etc. 100 people shortlisted. Candidates go through psychometric test Tips: Interview preparation was best done in groups of 2-3 at a time: One interviewer, one interviewee and one observer. Tests were best prepared for by referring to the CAT study material
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: c) ~40 people selected after this stage d) 3-4 interviews –first case study , second HR , third and fourth case study. 3 people made final offers. a) First case study involved understanding the details of two marketing strategies. Then, comparing the effectiveness of the two in terms of revenue generated incase of limited budget and in case of specific no. of customers to be contacted. The final task involved calculating the point at which transition occurred in effectiveness for the two strategies for the two cases.
Round: HR Interview Experience: b) Second interview consisted of HR questions like a. Why capital one? b. Why not research? c. An instance of working under time and resource constraints? d. An instance of leadership. e. An instance of innovation and thought leadership.
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: c) Third interview was again a case study involving credit card strategies. The task involved calculating the effect of reduction in the credit limit or an increase in the rate of lending for high risk customers. In both the cases, it was required to calculate the % reduction in customers for the profit to remain same. Then a question was asked regarding which strategy I thought was better and how would I decide it? Note: Capital one case studies are simple mathematical case studies with a focus on understanding and calculations. These are different from the ones asked by consultancy companies like Mckinsey BCG etc. where the candidate is expected to ask the right questions before supplying any data. All the data for case studies in Capital one is provided at the start itself. If someone wants to appear for this company, what all should he/she ideally prepare? Someone preparing for Capital One should practice numerical case studies like the ones gives in Tucks Case study book 2002. They should also try the case studies available on the capital one website. Its important to prepare the HR based questions well because they might ultimately decide whether you are in or out. Another important advice is that you should think aloud while solving the case studies. It helps a lot in avoiding silly mistakes as well as in keeping the interviewer interested.
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: General Tips Overall, any particular mistake that you committed during the whole process? For case interviews, I gave fewer options for a particular problem…told them only what I thought could be the problem. After getting the feedback, I guess they were looking for a person who could suggest all possible options, prioritize them and then tell them reasons for choosing/ rejecting a particular option. Any key tips for interview-day, viz. dressing, etiquette… ? Dress properly and smartly Be very confident Don’t think too much about not being able to get through the company Take your own pen and paper; keep spare copies of resume in a folder Be energetic and enthusiastic. Did you apply off-campus? Where? What was the procedure? Any memories? Yes, I did and got an offer from Deutsche Bank, India. The company had offered me during campus placements, but I had refused because I wanted to explore more options. As they had already interviewed me, a call after off campus started, did the job.
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: 3 cases in all, 2 went well, think the second interviewer was a little unhappy. Case 1: Estimate the worth of Mahindra and Mahindra Case 2: What would you do to open a mall (the first of its kind) in Kota Case 3: About some drug dealer importing drugs from abroad. What all problems can it face if he switches over to an Indian manufacturer. Tips: Suggest all possibilities, speak relevant but more than the interviewer. Dominate the discussion. Tell him/her all directions you can think in. Be yourself during the whole process; don't be unnecessarily humble/ polite to the recruiters.
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: Resume preparation was not a difficult task since I knew why I did things that were in my resume. To cover everything in detail I took help of HLPQ- a set of some 218 questions. There is no need to mug up answers to these questions. It should be read just once to get an idea of questions that can come up during an interview. I attended almost all pre-placement talks. These sessions definitely give a good idea about the company, the profile they are offering and the people therein. I consulted few seniors to make a choice between companies.
Round: Group Discussion Experience: GD Topic: Should the government lay more stress on building infrastructure facilities before inviting/giving permissions to MNCs Tips: I prepared in groups of 2/3. I think preparation should be done in groups, but with few members (max 4/5), so that everybody gains from it. Prepare with different groups &its because after some time , all group members start thinking in the same way and no new ideas come up. It also helps in knowing different perspectives about the same issue.
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: Case Interview: A candy company wants to increase its sales, what should it do to enhance sales in three given segments and how much compensation should it offer to its sales people? Also what should be the criteria to decide compensation? Lot of data was given- questions regarding best ways to analyze various kinds of data manually and using excel were also asked.
Round: HR Interview Experience: HR Interview: Why ZS? How can you contribute to the firm? Some mathematical puzzles and graphical questions. If someone wants to appear for this company, what all should he/she ideally prepare? Nothing much…general case study preparation will be of help. Prepare questions like - Why ZS and What skills do you have to add value to the company. Rest all was general awareness…a little knowledge about what all excel can do.
General Tips: For case interviews, I gave fewer options for a particular problem & told them only what I thought could be the problem. Be energetic and enthusiastic. College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Resume Shortlist Tips: Cpi doesn't matter. But the project works and achievements in Olympiads does!
Round: Test Tips: Test consists of Linear algebra, CS basics, probability sections. Don't hurry and try to best in all the sections. Try to top any one section. (CS students might concentrate on CS section and likewise)
Round: Puzzle Interview Tips: Not exactly puzzles. Probability plus CS basics (depending on your background. Non cs students might not have questions on algorithms)
Round: Other Interview Tips: Convey a better command on topics. Interview process might vary on the profile they are looking for.
General Tips: Work on probability and puzzles. Try to know about the profile they are hiring you for. Get to know more about it. College Name: IIT BOMBAY Motivation: New field. First job. Chance to take risk. Funny Moments: Ended up discussing a lot about my entrepreneurial experience with the interviewer who has similar background before joining GS
Round: Resume Shortlist Tips: Many times good preparation can overcome short comings of your resume. This is particularly true for those people whose resume don't give clear picture of there caliber.
Round: Group Discussion Tips: Do's:Considerate Group which shunned the possibility of GD becoming a Fish Market. Inputs to give the direction to the discussion and bringing the focus back case discussion has deviated from the main topic Smooth elaboration of someone else points with some additional information. (This works well when you are short of ideas). Don’ts: Do avoid them (I got to know from after recruitment talks) Including your own thoughts while summarizing the GD at the end, rather stating what was discussed. Facing the GD coordinator while talking to the group.
Round: Other Interview Experience: Second Round was Personal Interview. It was roughly structured in 4 parts. It first started with introduction and some general questions, then few questions on resume and situational cases. It was followed by a CASE STUDY, which involved estimation of number of tattooed people in India and finally questions from my side. Tips: Thorough preparation of general questions which helped in forming good starting impression and also gave me confidence to go further in interview. Preparing the questions for the company. They access you interest in company by this. Honest answer for situational questions. ( Situation given was that you are at fault how you will convey your team about it so that they don’t loose there confidence in you for future work) Trying to solve given case study by standard approach (Generally starting with population of India) which lead to a deviation from actual problem statement. Not attending company PPT and also not browsing through company website.

Round: Case Study Interview Experience: Probably made some errors in numerical calculations, but the approach was very clear. Also I was asked some HS 101 stuff, like degree of control over pricing in perfect competition, monopoly, and duopoly situations.
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: Now basically in the case books very few org. cases are discussed and I hadn’t come across a single one. So, I just tried to think really logically and gave him very high level answers like ( labour union issues, faith in senior mgmt, compare org structure with competition etc ) Theinterviewer was very supportive and kept probing for more possibilities. Finally I was exhausted and could offer him nothing more.
Round: HR Interview Experience: It had been a very tiring day and this was to be my 7th interview. But the good part was that I had started enjoying the interviews by now. After the usual warm-up questions, I was asked to name something that I felt really passionately about and the remaining 30 minutes were spent just probing this passion of mine so deep, that even I came out surprised that I had indeed thought so much to answer that issue. This interview proved to me that one should never underestimate the interviewer’s intelligence. These are very, very smart people and are very good at cracking your thought process. I was made an offer after this interview, so the 4th one was more of an informal chat about past BAs their experiences.
General Tips: If you are one of the lucky ones short listed for more than 1 company, you must decide beforehand what your preferences are and tell the placement body so. There is no reason to succumb to strong arm tactics from companies. Ideally you should be in a position to make a decision after you have all the offers in hand. But the placement body’s rules will have a major role to play in this. Skill Tips: Each individual has his own take on this. Personally, I read most of the theory from the casebooks floating around on campus and came out with my own framework to solve a problem. Practicing case interviews with a friend helps a lot. But finding a good interviewer is usually tough. I requested a couple of friends and tried out 2-3 cases with each. Totally, I solved not more than 10 cases , which I think was optimal. Too little and you don’t have enough experience and too many will take the fun out of the interview College Name: IIT BOMBAY Funny Moments: In case study, the interviewer talked about even higher level issues like mission statement and vision documents and that the organization was not able to THINK global etc. Came out of this interview assuming my rendezvous with McK was done.
Round: Puzzle Interview Experience: A puzzle where they wanted to check my approach. And the rest was mostly about stuff from my resume. Tips: Be thorough with whatever you have mentioned on your resume. If your resume says you like playing squash for instance. You should know the basics of the game atleast. And if you know the court size, the different types of squash balls, world famous players of the sport, etc, it helps.
Round: Puzzle Interview Experience: Again a puzzle and normal resume based interview. After the first 2 interviews I was pretty sure of getting through to the next round. And so I did.
Round: Puzzle Interview Experience: I was asked some stuff about my start-up which I had mentioned. I had to defend myself and assure them that I did want to join Inductis. It was not a very good interview for me, I guess was somewhere on the border.
Round: HR Interview Experience: It went fine. The last 2 interviews placed me on the edge of getting selected or not selected in the company. And therefore, an extra interview was called for.
Round: Other Interview Experience: Puzzle and more of a conversation where the interviewer wanted to make sure if I will join their company or no. Somehow managed to dodge them through to get a final selection.
Round: Test Experience: Its the easiest part of the process.Fractal though takes a more of logic based test, ones like mental ability we used to do for NTSE and 10th standard. They had shortlisted about 50 people on the basis of test.
Round: Group Discussion Experience: We had large groups of 10-12 people. Generic debating topics were given. One thing they specifically didn’t like was excessive aggressiveness during the GD. Tips: Once you feel that you have had enough air-time in the discussion, try and give other chance.
Round: Technical Interview Experience: My interview was the last one so had to wait a long time and finally started with questions on my tech background and surprisingly I was good at the answers. I was then asked 2 puzzles which I answered in a few trials Tips: All analytics and maths based companies stressed a lot on the puzzles part and questions of probabilities. So it might be a good idea to try out all the puzzles on orkut for a start. Also brush up your probability lessons. If going wrong they do help with the approach and in case of wrong answers the approach does help.
Round: HR Interview Experience: From the whole interview process I did find out I cannot prepare myself fully for an interview. Always be truthful, that way you have the best explanations and the delays are minimal. Tips: Know the basics and fundamentals and try and build over them. Do not attack the answer directly.
Round: Resume Shortlist Experience: They are looking at the challenging things you have done with your stay. Inter-IIT, Independent Body Positions, etc. help – but are not necessarily sufficient. The shortlist was quite arbitrary and obviously done in a hurry, but they have an active off-campus hiring scene, with the oil exploration boom just kicking in. They are looking to hire about 6000 people in the current calendar year – and this will in all likelihood continue in the next year.
Round: HR Interview Experience: I imagine the best way to tackle this is to be calm and composed and look for onepoint in the questioning and cross questioning that you can buy your way out on. In my case I sort of drove them to how old Hitler was, and his credentials; not very flashy but effective. The idea of course is to be prepared well enough for the other questions. The rest of the interview, calm, steady and simple answers are what they seemed to like. Tips: A few things that might help you convince them: You want to do a hands-on technology job. You like adventure and hard work. You like the idea of a mobile, glitzy well paid life.
Round: HR Interview Experience: For the first question I said that I'd prefer to learn by dirtying my hands.I told them that I love what I know of Europe and would like to work there , they also questioned me on my knowledge of the languages on my resume and I told them that I wasn't in touch and couldn't possibly make conversation. Tips: Post selection, you have to also clear a medical test. Please keep your Passports ready and also get your ECNR clearance done (this can be done with a 10+2 certificate and your latest grade sheet). Get a driving license and as much driving experience as possible. And be patient and insistent with the personnel managers, they have a lot of complications to take care of, but they eventually take care of your case as well.
Skills: ability to be involved in hands on work College Name: IIT BOMBAY
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: I actually made one mistake in my calculations, but was able to identify it on my own and eventually correct it.
Round: HR Interview Experience: This interview went really well for me – mainly because I had prepared really pretty well for questions to ask the company after going through their site and discussing it with my friends – so I had 4 good questions to ask them. What also helped me was that I could take 2 very big things off my resume to talk about when asked about my experience in a specific HR situation. After I mentioned the outline of my experience in both situations I was asked 5-6 more probing questions to find out more about the incident and I answered them pretty well.
Round: Case Study Interview Experience: It involved a lot of calculations. There were 3 different credit card offers with different costs and profits and we had to choose the best offer for the company. I was told later that my formulation of the problem was good since I set it up and then just put the numbers in the same setup to get the answers.
Skill Tips: a) DONOT lie in your resume b) Know your resume through and through – you should be able to take 5 minutes on even the most insignificant point of your resume c) Make it as balanced as possible (in terms of academic, extra curricular, etc) d) Put specific thought into the words used for all your points – don’t be generic anywhere.
