5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: They were very similar to CAT type questions.
Cut-off is very low compared to mock-CATs. So if there are about 35-40 questions, answering 18-20 correctly should suffice. Soft skills play an important role here.I think there was no negative marking. Build a strategy how you are going to mark the questions you couldn't attempt.
Some questions are tricky. Don't fall for them.
Tips: Preparing for CAT will help anyone to clear the written test.
Total Questions: 40

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: All the shortlisted students were given some 5 topics to prepare for. They were the current financial issues across globe.
Tips: This was different from last year.Never ask any questions about work life-balance, work hours or get too much into detail about their project (asking about their risk management practices, etc).

Round: Behavorial Interview
Experience: Two MDs took my first round of interview. My interview was about 50 minutes (30 mins is average). Reason for lengthy interview was one of my financial projects. I explained at length to them, which itself took about 25 minutes. Otherwise they concentrated on some basic questions like what is CDF and its properties? Integrate arctan(x). Bayes theorem based problems.
Tips: Some of my friends were asked puzzles. Substantiate everything on your CV. Read the basic concepts of your branch. Prepare for some HR questions - have unique and different answer. Avoid using words like passion, etc.
Read some basic subjects - no matter what department you are in.Avoid bookish answers for HR questions. Rather relate them to your past and answer.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Rest of the content of my CV was covered.More questions were asked about subjects, certifications, projects etc.

General Tips: Puzzles are very important for non-finance people.
One important note : Certifications ( CFA, NCFM, FRM, PRM or actuaries) doesn't fill all the voids in your profile. A good profile without CFA will get you the shortlist but not the other way.
Completing 1 or 2 financial projects is beneficial. Make sure you know everything about the project and beyond. What more could have been achieved? What is the expected result?
Anyone with low CG should be involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities and elaborate how the experience will help in the financial industry.

6 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Jumbled but can be classified into 3 major categories: Quantitative (CAT level), Data Interpretation and Current Affairs in Finance (e.g. India's GDP, Nifty's Year High level etc.)
1 subjective question (Compulsory) e.g. Identifying most suitable acquisition target for a firm using the information presented in a table. There is no correct answer to such questions. They were interested in the approach the way you justify your answer.
Tips: Follow financial media regularly over the Autumn semester (Economic Times, Reuters). Each candidate is given an opportunity to ask questions to the desk Heads. Make sure that you ask relevant questions. You will have many of those as you try to understand the business in detail.Do not spend too much of time on a particular question (this particularly applies to DI questions).
The pattern of the test may vary year to year.CAT preparation helps.
Total Questions: 40

Round: networking session
Experience: It was held in Kolkata in early November for shortlisted students. Heads of various desks were present to introduce their business and to answer queries. It is supposed to be non-evaluative. It turned out to be an excellent platform to understand the exact nature of the job.
They had given some GD topics based on latest financial happenings.
Tips: It was very informal and the purpose was to emphasize the importance of keeping updated with the news.
Dress well. It is extremely important.

Round: mentor interaction
Experience: Every shortlisted student was allotted a mentor for a month post networking session. Mentors typically comprise of KGP alumni currently working with GMC.
Tips: Personally, mentor interaction turned out to be very amicable for me. You can get all the queries resolved directly. It helps to seek a feedback on your preparation from the mentor.

Round: Behavorial Interview
Experience: Around 15 minutes long. I was quizzed about the resume. Major emphasis was on coursework since ours was only the 2nd batch of MSc Eco. Internships were also covered in detail. This was followed by a few current affairs questions and my intention of joining DB etc,
Tips: If you have multiple shortlists, they try to ensure that you are really interested in DB.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: This was around 20-25 minute long. It was held by 2 senior managers. For the initial part, it was purely technical. Given my finance background, I was asked questions on binomial option pricing and option trading strategies. Since my MSc project was closely related to one of their desks, major part of the interview involved discussion about the same.
Tips: They made us feel very comfortable. Most of us were made spot offers at the end of the interview.Make sure that you are comfortable explaining you internships/projects in a lucid manner. Be sure about your career goals as they are really interested in this particular area.
Be careful while using finance jargon in your answers. This may invite new questions. If you answer them, it reflects extremely well. But the opposite also applies.

General Tips: They do not have a bias towards any particular background as such. However, a few pointers definitely set your resume apart:
1) Decent CGPA (Not a prerequisite though)
2) Projects/internships involving quantitative work
3) Financial Certification like CFA/FRM (The importance is overstated on campus. Clearing the exam is not enough and does not guarantee a place in the shortlist. One has to defend the finance background in a grueling interview. On the contrary, people with no finance background can do well by scoring handsomely in the written test.)
4) Relevant coursework (Finance courses from VGSOM/HSS).
A quality leadership/teamwork experience is a plus. They are interested in the lessons you learnt during your tenure in the position of responsibility you handled.
No specific criteria is used on the projects front. However, internships belonging to one or more of following categories set you apart:
1) Quantitative nature of work (either a research project or industry project)
2) Significant responsibility
3) Strong outcome (Publication, appreciation etc)
Make sure that you can speak at length about your internship experiences.
Skill Tips: Quantitative ability is a must. It supercedes all other parameters (including financial certifications). Above average performance in the written test is a must. For people with no finance background, do practice puzzles from 'Heard on the Street' and 'How to Move Mount Fuji'. Both the books are available on LAN.
Programming skills is NOT a must. However, experience of working with statistical packages and relational databases is a plus. If your resume says that you are proficient in Excel, they may ask you to write macros for simple tasks.
Written test: CAT preparation (even if you are not serious about IIMs )
Current affairs
Interviews: Know your CV well, practice puzzles and brush up your finance fundamentals extremely well if you portray yourself as one with a finance background.
Skills: Quanitative ability, Puzzles, Statistical packages help, Soft skills

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: About 600-700 people applied. 53 were shortlisted. Analytical skills. Reasoning. Basically solve different CAT mock test papers. Should be enough.
Tips: The questions are not very hard. Don't cheat. They were very strict regarding this. You don't want to be thrown out in the first phase itself.

Round: Group Activity
Experience: The 53 shortlisted students were called for a workshop in Kolkata the very next day. 5 Group Discussion topics were given and students were expected to prepare on these topics. It was basically a networking cum GD session.
Tips: Highly Evaluative. Go prepared. Go very prepared.Don't irritate them.
Look interested.
Ask questions. Relevant questions.

Round: Mentorship
Experience: Though it wasn't that long a process, I think it carried weight as well. A mentor was assigned to a group of 10-11 students. The mentor called once to know more about the candidate. More of an informal chat session.Telephonic conversation.
Tips: Learn it.Be polite.
Don't sound rushed.
If you're not in an *cough* appropriate place to attend the call, reschedule the call. But please be available at the scheduled time.
Ask questions.
Don't be too formal.
Follow up with a mail/ further questions etc.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I had two rounds of interviews, with the first concentrating mainly on my technical (finance) skills, given my interest. The second round was a Director-level round which focussed much more on my interests and integration.
Tips: Just be very well prepared. Though DB doesn't take stress interviews but you can expect one if you are among the later ones.Don't give up. Ho jaayega.
Look fresh and interested.

General Tips: I was 7.13 and had the lowest CG in the select list. And there was no mention about academics at all in my interviews.
CFA/FRM/ even to some extent NCFMs will help, if you can back them up with a solid knowledge base and/or interest in the field, evident from some project work/publications etc.
Regarding Extra academic involvement, you need it but you have to know your stuff. If you're bragging about how good you're at martial arts, you should know who Chuck Norris is.
Jokes apart, a solid knowledge of the field in which you are interested apart from academics, gives an impression of genuine interest. So, be prepared and expect questions on all the points in your CV.
My second round interview was with one of the directors and they asked me to integrate some pretty complex functions.
Ideally, I should be knowing it, since I'm from Math background. SO expect questions on your major subject.
Apart from this, giving CAT (but not mentioning it in the interview) always helps with respect to quantitative abilities. Also solve as many puzzles as you can. Always helps.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: CGPA cut-off: 7. The test had two parts. The level of the questions in the first part was very easy and do not require GRE or CAT skills. It had questions on verbal ability (readinc comprehension and vocabulary) and Math (time- work problems, arithmetic, percentages etc). The second part had questions related to Mechanical Engineering. It was slightly tough having a wide range of questions from Kinematics, design of machine elements, fluids , and thermodynamics .However, one can easily crack the test.
Tips: Don’t leave the questions unaswered as there is no negative marking.

Round: Interview
Experience: Around 60 students were shortlisted for the interview .There was only one round of interview which had both HR and technical questions. The interviewers were very friendly. The interview went on for approximately forty minutes. They started by asking me about my hometown, family, interests etc. Few question were: “Tell me about yourself”, “Describe your hometown”, “Why do u want to join Bosch and what do you know about it”, “Why won’t you go for MS or PhD”. The rest of the interview process was about the projects and internships and a few basic concepts of Mechanical Engineering. Each student was asked questions from different topics depending on the projects he was involved in. Basic questions I was asked : “What is casting”, “What is forming”, “How is a gear manufactured”, “What is the profile oF the gears used and why”. Apart from these, afew things about CRDi technology were asked.
Tips: Being a part of technology events in the hall will help a lot during the interview process. Google about ABS, CRDi, bearings, gears etc and study the “Thermodynamic cycles” from any thermodynamics book before the interview. Be confident.Never create an impression that you are a research orientated guy and will be going for MS or PhD. Do not panic. Do not try to bluff - they are experienced people and will find it out. Prepare very thoroughly about the projects. Learn about recent developments in the automobile sector (any technology developed by Bosch). Always smile .

General Tips: Having a CGPA>8 will enhance your chances. In mechanical, almost all the students who got selected had a CGPA of around 8.5. Mine was 8.4. However, Class X and Class XII percentages do not matter.
Internships in automobile industries definitely help. My sophomore intern was at Tata Motors Ltd. which caught the interviewer’s attention. The interview was guided by the project done by me at Tata Motors. Having a few academic projects also helps. Generally, they ask about projects mentioned in the CV. So, it’s better to be prepared about any project you may have done. Knowledge of the auto-sector is a must. Learn about recent developments in this sector.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: Everyone with a GPA of more than 7 was allowed to appear for an objective online test which was held a day before the interviews. Test comprised of 3 sections: Verbal, Quantitative and Technical.Verbal and Quantitative sections were not very difficult. They were a bit lengthy though, which makes speed an important factor. Technical section comprised of basic questions most of which were conceptual or directly formula based.
Tips: Don’t leave any question as there was no negative marking. Revise basic concepts and formulas, preferably from any GATE book.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: One round of personal interview which consisted of both technical and HR questions.Technical questions related to projects/internships. Questions related to various manufacturing processes. HR questions like where do you see yourself 5 years down the line, why don’t you go for an MBA or higher studies, what kind of a job are you looking for?
Tips: Just be yourself. Admit if you don’t know the answer to a question. Politely ask them the answer to show that you are curious. Think of a few questions about the company which you’d like to ask at the end of the interview.

General Tips: The CGPA criteria set by the company to be eligible for placement was 7 and above. Most of the students who were finally selected had a CGPA of more than 8 but a few 7 pointers were also selected. So a good GPA would definitely help but it is not the only thing that they look for. A few positions of responsibility on your CV is always good though as it gives the interviewer something to talk about apart from the academics. You would be asked about your projects and internships in great detail. Make sure to prepare them well before the interview.

3 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: It contained 3 sections: Aptitude Questions, Programming questions and third section depending on which profile the candidate is opting for, which contained CS,VLSI or DSP profile. Programming: Pseudo code questions which required to find the output of code or the code which resulted in specific output.
Tips: Answer all questions since there was no negative marking (at least this time).

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I had three interviews out of which the first two were technical and third H.R. The interview started with a personal question. Then I was aked about my project in detail. Knowing what projects you did and basic details which constitute the base of the project is must. The next question was about designing a FSM. And the following interview was based on general VLSI based questions mainly setup-hold time, power consumption reduction techniques etc and some puzzles.
Tips: Knowing the basics about subjects and projects is most important.

General Tips: High CGPA is helpful but your answers in interview are
more important.
Skill Tips: For VLSI part a HDL is needed and knowing software related to VLSI CAD is added advantage. Also good logical ability and problem solving skill helps since they ask puzzles and digital design problems.
