Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: All multiple choices, technical questions - testing your knowledge as well as basic understanding of your core subjects. Topics were steel making; composition of stainless steel and other alloys, heat treatment methods, phase diagram, hardness measurement methods, various processing methods like welding, casting and the list goes on.
Duration: 60 minutes
Total Questions: 50

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: Number of people: 8-10. GD was not an elimination round in JSPL recruitment. Performance was just an added value to your interview.
Tips: Don’t sit idle. No matter if you speak nonsense, just speak.
Duration: 10-20 minutes

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My Answers(in question order):
1. A country’s development is mainly based on the kind of infrastructure it has; and the strength of the infrastructure depends on the strength and quality of metals used in it; strength and quality of the metal is decided by the quality of metallurgist and material engineers in the country. So I am quite motivated towards becoming a leading metallurgical engineer in Steel industry.
2. ArcelorMittal
3. For ArcelorMittal we need work experience and it prefers PhD people. I want to start my career with JSPL, because gave some statistics/data of the key achievements of JSPL, praised the company.
4. These kinds of questions are very frequently asked in any of the Steel Company’s HR interview. So, mug up some statistics.

Panel was of Uma Shankar Dalai and Chandan Kalra.
Tips: Visit the website of JSPL before sitting for the interview. They can ask you to enlist some of the plants of JSPL, or some current news of JSPL

Round: Other Interview
Experience: (Uma Shankar Dalai)1. Questions were regarding the Internships. Since my internship was in RINL (Vizag Steel Plant), he was very keenly asking me questions on it and I had to be very careful in answering them, because he was the ace in that field. ))
2. Some questions on blast furnace like “what is Hot top pressure, why it is important, slag metal basicity”, important inclusions in steel and the way they are removed, conditions for P and S removal, effect of alloying addition of various elements to Steel.
3. Phase diagram of iron, composition of stainless steel, various heat treatment methods

(Chandan Kalra)
First few questions were based on the internship and the projects mentioned in the resume. Then he asked questions related to blast furnace and steel making. For example:
1. What would be the consequences of closing the top of the blast furnace?
2. How would you increase the efficiency and output of the blast furnace?
3. Explain in detail the steel making process.
I was also asked to draw a schematic of the blast furnace with proper labeling.

General Tips: 1. The book Callister’s Materials science and engineering is must for all, because it can revise your concepts in very less time and touches every part of the material science.
2. Issue some books of iron and steel-making from the library, thoroughly read the technicalities of blast furnace and LD converter. Read about the various heat treatment procedures from a good book. You can find many such books in the library (3rd floor near the fountain side)
3. Prepare well for questions like why do you want to join the company.
4. Do revise MME 350 and MME 310 - learn the Fe-C phase diagram by heart.
5. Always spend some time going through the company’s website before an interview.
Skills: Mechanical behavior of materials , Principles of metal extraction and refining , Phase equilibria and Phase transformations in materials , Iron and steel making , Fundamentals of material processing

7 Interview Rounds

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: Short-listing was based on an application form that the applying candidates had to fill. The short-listing criteria were CPI, co-curricular activities and projects.
Apart from the regular information present in CV, the form included questions like:
1. Any one major leadership role performed in past? If yes, then give a brief about it.
2. What are your Strengths and Weaknesses?  Why do you want to join Surya?
3. What are your expectations from Surya?
4. Company will provide you the exclusive training and give you a rising growth in terms (Designation, Responsibility and Compensation). But IITians are known for their volatile attachment with the organizations. We would like to know your reaction for bond structure.
Tips: Around 20 students were shortlisted, out of which 10 were from MME.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: 2 groups of 10-11 people each. 10-11 students qualified for the interview.
Tips: 1. Initially, 2 minutes were given to think and write down the points in your mind. Each person was asked to speak for one minute. Then discussion started.
2, Define globalization, and Indian values in the beginning.
3. Work on your communication skills before the placement season.
4. Attend discussion sessions organized by SPO.
5. Regularly read the newspapers and be abreast of the current affairs.
Duration: 25 minutes

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Since the GD was based on Indian culture vs. Globalization, questions were asked on the candidate’s opinion on Indian culture: like do you think Yoga is good? If yes, do you practice it? Why not?

Round: Behavorial Interview
Experience: ‘Suppose you are working in a team of 4, out of which 1 person does not work at all. At the end of the task, everybody gets equal reward. What will be your reaction to this?’
Tips: He answered that he won’t object to it unless the output/reward is good. If the performance goes down, he would like to object.

General Tips: 1. Read the newspaper before the placement season – you should know at least 2-3 weeks old news up to the current one.
2. Know about your projects well.
3. Try having a CPI of at least 7.
4. Have good communication skills, and revise your subjects well.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: It was an online test.
Aptitude test was simple, below CAT level.
The technical test consisted of questions related to Heat and mass transfer, the dimensionless constants (Re, Pr, Bi, Nu), viscous fluid flow, etc.
The HR round had questions like tell me about yourself.
Tips: If you plan to apply for thermal or flumech profile, study the topics like Heat and mass transfer, the dimensionless constants (Re, Pr, Bi, Nu), viscous fluid flow thoroughly

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Questions were thesis and course related.
An abstract question regarding infinite number of point vortices on a line was asked.
I was unprepared for questions on thermodynamic cycles, flow networks. Luckily, I was asked a numeric question and an algorithm on how to sort an array, which I could answer.
Tips: Don't fail to read up on your thesis!

Round: HR Interview
Experience: This round involved typical HR questions. I had prepared my answers according to the profile, which formed the bulk of the interview.
Tips: Don't forget to prepare for HR. This is critical.

General Tips: Don't mention higher studies, and display interest in the company and the profile.
And most importantly, do not lose heart!

Interview Questions

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Mainly they were looking for my interest in the field of VLSI design and good communication skills.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Initially they themselves told about the company, what they expected from me, their present work and future. Then they asked a few simple questions.

Round: Other Interview
Experience: Most of the questions asked in the interview focused upon microprocessors. These questions required thorough knowledge about microprocessors. A few questions were very tough such as a question about pipelining which is usually taught in advanced questions. They also asked some electronic questions which could be done on the spot. Besides I was also asked about my B-Tech project and work in summer internship in detail.

General Tips: 1. A B-Tech project in VLSI design and a CPI of about 8.9 was the cut off criteria for B-Tech electrical students.
2. Be honest when making your resume about your project and interns.
3. You need to have good knowledge about microelectronics.
4. Another 4th year course of EE-618(analog circuits) is also helpful.
Skill Tips: In order to succeed in this interview you need to be honest in telling about the projects you have done. They can easily find out if you give them false details about the projects.
