Interview Preparation Tips

General Tips: Do’s :
• PREPARE FOR APTITUDE TESTS. Many of us believe that our profile will lead us getting
shortlisted on resume basis. That may be true, but I have not seen a process as random as
placements. It might happen that you are getting closely rejected in 3-4 firms for which you have
prepared. In such a case, having a good aptitude will give you more no. of shortlists, which will give
you a psychological security to fall back. APTITUDE PREPARATION IS BORING, so you may start it
and then leave it. Don’t do it. It is the only thing that is going to be with you in case something
unexpected happens.
• Be prepared for random and unexpected events like unexpected shortlisting results, irregularities in interview procedures etc.
• Prepare in a group, and help each other. The entire placement preparation phase is very taxing,
and support from people around you helps.

Dont’s :
• Don’t leave things for the end.
• Don’t underestimate yourself. Don’t overestimate yourself too.
• Don’t have pre-conceived notions about anything: no. of people a company is going to hire, who is
better than you, who is worse than you etc. Let the company decide what they want.

Final Tips :
• Prioritize the sectors and analyse your chances.
• Don’t keep too high or too low expectations from yourself.
• PREPARE APTITUDE. If you don’t get placed in big firms, aptitude is your only fall back.
• Be prepared for unexpected outcomes.
• Trust yourself for what you know, because there are a lot of things and you cant know everything.
The interview is driven by what you write on your resume. Know what you write.
• In all preparation aspects, one never gets a feeling of satisfaction. Due to paucity of time and so
much pressure around, we are unable to do things as per our expectations. So don’t worry too
much. Give ample time to things, but don’t overdo them.
• Go to the interview empty-headed. Thinking too much about things makes you feel nervous. An empty mind works most efficiently.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: INTERVIEW
Experience: My interview went on for about 1.2 hours.
It was the first interview I was giving in my life, and it couldn’t have been better. Before entering I had made up my mind that no matter what, I wouldn’t get nervous because I didn’t need to.

General Tips: Do’s and Don’ts :
- Do not try to be someone else during the interview. Because the person sitting on the other side
has the ability to figure it out in a jiffy.
- In your portfolio, please put only those things that you are proud of. You don’t have to show
everything under the sun that you have done. Your master resume is there for that. Your portfolio is
just to show your best work to them.
- Be confident about whatever you say inside the interview room.
- Try working on your portfolio by mid-august so that by the time the SPO asks for your portfolio, you would’ve had the time to make 3-4 iterations on your final one.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: It was held couple of days before their interview process. Test consisted of Quant, Logical reasoning and Verbal Ability, similar to CAT pattern but was comparatively easy. They shortlisted approximately 80 students for interview process.

Round: Other Interview
Experience: It was a mix of mostly HR + few probability questions. It was a 40min interview. It was a good interview as I was able to answer all his question and could easily solve the probability questions.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: It was all technical wherein the interviewer asked me 4-5 puzzles and some probability questions. I was able to answer most of the puzzles correctly but got stuck in one of the probability questions.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Final HR round. Here the interviewer was continuously grilling me by stating that my profile is not coherent with their job description. I maintained my composure and was able to handle the situation with ease.

General Tips: Do’s :
Apart from all preparation :
• Take proper sleep whenever given a chance to. Do not skip meals.
• Prepare about the company in advance, last minute preparation might lead to a panic situation. Ask your friends (not sitting in placements) to help you prepare.
• Take someone to the interviews. He/She will manage your interviews accordingly. It’s also a motivating factor.
• Always carry a smile when going to an interview. You should not appear stressed.

Don’ts :
• Don’t try to delay things. Prepare a timeline for preparation. Don’t accumulate things post end sem, because you will have to appear for a lot of tests after that. Hence you get limited time for preparation.
• Don’t be in a false assumption that if you possess a strong profile (PORs, Extra currics etc.) you will make it through the interviews. It can only help you fetch an interview. You have to work hard to clear that interview.

6 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Duration: 60 minutes minutes

Round: Test
Duration: 30 minutes minutes

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The shortlist came only 3-4 hrs before the commencement of interviews so I didn’t have enough time to prepare anything extra after the list was forwarded.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The interviewee had a cross-sectional diagram of a fuel injector and there was a graph plotted versus time against it, showing the variation of fuel pressure at 2 places, positions of movable parts in the plug, etc based on which he asked me to tell how the fuel injector worked. He later also asked me force analysis of a movable rod in the injector. Initially, he was mainly asking me the questions related to engines though I told him that my interest area is FEM and simulations. Once my interview was over and I moved out, after 2-3 minutes he again called me back and this time he asked me technical questions related to my interest area only. I answered almost all questions related to engines correctly, so you need to be prepared to answer questions which are not your interest area. I failed to answer a question about variation of stresses over the length of a bended circular beam and I also said that I am not good at fluid mechanics when he asked me about it.

General Tips: Do’s :
1) Revise all courses well beforehand.
2) Get your resumes reviewed by others or at least review it yourself multiple times and ensure that there are at least no spelling or grammatical mistakes.
3) Be prepared to answer any questions related to any software/concept/mechanism mentioned in your resume.
4) Be prepared to answer questions like Tell me about yourself, why this company, why should we choose you/what sets you apart compared to others etc.
5) Ask seniors what all to prepare for specific companies you are targeting.

Don’ts :
1) Don’t target everything that comes. If you don’t get specific to what kind of job you want you may end up not being prepared for either of them.
2) Don’t claim software's or concepts that you don’t know well or haven’t contributed anything to in your resume.
3) Don’t by heart answers to obvious questions word to word. Just make up the points and frame it on spot.
4) Don’t think that because of poor CPI you don’t have any chance. Preparation matters a lot. People with low CPI but good preparation get placed on day 1.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: FORM SUBMISSION
Tips: Be true in the answers and stick to the word limit.

Round: GROUP DISCUSSION
Experience: Students are shortlisted on the basis of form (HUL doesn’t ask for resumes). Then, GDs are conducted in a group of 8-10. The topics are like case-studies which highlight some problem being faced by an organization and you need to come up with some solution for the same.

Round: TECHNICAL + HR INTERVIEW
Experience: Students are further shortlisted after the GD for final interview. One should be thorough with his resume and should be in a position to explain the internships well. I encountered a lot of situation based questions in which I was asked to come up with solution for some typical problems faced in a factory.

General Tips: Do’s :
1. Work well on communication skills. It happens a lot that students have a lot of knowledge but couldn’t communicate well. So, do mock interviews and make sure you are able to explain what you know.
2. Have a knowledge about the company you are applying to. This reflects your motivation and seriousness towards the company.
Don’ts :
1. Resume, aptitude and GD should be done with good time in hand as they can’t be improved over night.

Apart from the standard things, I would advise that confidence and smile goes a long way.
Preparation of resume, aptitude, GDs, technical part is very important but I believe that at the end, communicating yourself well is the most important thing.
Skill Tips: Do mock interviews and make sure you are able to explain what you know.

6 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I was guided by placement office quite appreciably for preparation of resume. First by one to one interaction and second by suggesting to talk to the seniors who are either injob or are hereafter the job. As it is always suggested about resume that, it reflects you in brief, you have to get it as good as you can. I followed the guidelines, made the first draft, got it corrected from some of my friends who are working in industries and got feedbacks from students who have experience from industries.

Round: APTITUDE TEST
Experience: It was intimated as aptitude but it included Verbal, Quants and basics of programmingand data structures & algorithm.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: I went through two technical rounds and both of these included questions starting from the very basics of materials to the continuum mechanics’ fundamentals and applications. In the first round I was asked about flight mechanics & dynamics and controls’ by giving several conditions of practical importance, some part of engine structures and thermal science, my earlier projects and questions on that, some questions from the internship’s work and M.Tech thesis work. Very fundamental as well as complex questions were asked while explaining about the projects and thesis work. For the second round, I was sent to the panel interviewing for mechanical students and there I was asked questions from various subjects as well as for various conditions given on spot. Including both the technical interviews, I was asked questions from around 9-10 subjects of mechanical engineering. Apart from the questions from the course work, half of the interview was focused on the projects that I did earlier. I was asked to explain about the projects and give good insights of my contributions in that and accordingly I was asked questions from that as well. Later part of the technical round was focused for my thesis work. They started asking about the motivation behind the topic of the thesis and the technical platform set so far for the same. Concluding questions were from the company’s work and how I would be able to relate my expertise and thesis work for their benefit.. In the morning, Honeywell started it’s processing at around 6.30 am and I went for the first technical round at around 7 am. After some basic questions from the resume I was asked about the flight mech & controls. After sometimes the interviewer told me about his background, which was avionics and then he started from that. It must have gone over around 45 minutes. Second round of Honeywell was gruelling and I felt little uncomfortable at some points.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: HR round was more or less usual. Description about me and weaknesses in professional life were asked. The tricky one was one particular question about joining Honeywell and at the end of my answer, I was asked to compare Honeywell and the stalwarts of aerospace industry on my answer’s ground.

General Tips: Since I was looking only for the core aerospace companies, I was not looking very much about the aptitude and GD (specially, GD was not required). I was focusing about the technical side of the preparation, coursework, projects that I have done earlier and thesis work. I used the material provided by SPO for preparing the aptitude test solved some CAT papers and some online resources were useful. Further, I referred some core course works, specifically, thermal, fluid, aerodynamics, propulsion, structures & materials, materials & metallurgy and flight mechanics & dynamics for technical interviews.

Revise the course works, some part of the projects, be focused for profiles and prepare accordingly. Prior knowledge about companies work and the profile helps a lot. Sound knowledge of thesis work, approach and the applications, motivation behind the topic and the work completed till the placement season starts should clearly be checked. If you are not good at programming and DS & algo then revise the basics of these(helps for aptitude). Be mentally prepared for multiple rounds of technical interviews. Shape yourself according to the profile and surf through the company’s site beforehand. Get some suggestions and feedback from seniors(specifically, M.tech students should talk to seniors, fellow students and labmates who have been in industries) for technical interviews. Focus on your approach towards the problem for the worst case. During technical interview, don’t try to brag about the topic that you are not sure about. They sometimes want to test your approach and attitude for the problem given to you (which will be out of your comfort zone) rather than the accuracy of the answer. Since verbal was also the part of aptitude, don’t forget to look that during your preparation. Final Tips : Don’t lose hope and be focused for the profile that you are interested in and narrow down the companies accordingly. It’s all your attitude, past experience (both academics and professional) and preparation for the placements that will help you to nail it. 1st, 2nd or any other day or any other company (as long asthe profile matches with your interest) don’t matter much. At the end of the day, getting in the core-profile is what matters most (if you are interested incore alone) and if it is your preferred company then it’s a boon. Have faith in yourself and believe in the next option if you don’t get the first one.
College Name: IIT KANPUR
Motivation: Other companies that I was shortlisted for : GE, Rolls-Royce, Airbus. Analysis of available options (based on profile, growth, compensation, BrandName, etc) :As for the first day, GE didn’t seem inclined in taking Aerospace Engineering students and I was not looking for Rolls-Royce very interestingly. I was mainly focusing on Honeywell, Eaton and Airbus and was shortlisted to interview with these three. Because of Honeywell’s versatility and the involvement in R&D(as I got the feedback from people working in there), I was focusing mainly on Honeywell. And it was very much favourable from compensation point of view as well. Finally I was selected in both Honeywell and Eaton, and chose Honeywell.

5 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: There were 15 questions from quant’s, 10 questions from data interpretation with 1 mark each and -.5 for wrong answer also there were 2 case studies with 10 marks each with no –ve marks. Total 45 marks question, I did only 9 from quant and 7 from DI total 16 out of 25 questions and didn’t touch case studies. Quanta and DI were very basics level.

In those 16, 1 question was wrong so basically I did 14.5 out of 45, but with a accuracy of 90%. Didn’t expect to get shortlisted but was very tensed and angry upon myself coz it was my level paper. But around 12 mid night shortlist came and I was at 11th position out of 31 students in the list.

There were total around 90 students who appeared for written test. They allowed Mtech and Mca guys not Btech.
Total Questions: 25

Round: TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
Experience: I went there and greeted him. Firstly he told me to introduce myself, later he asked what I like the most. I told analytical thinking and logical reasoning and yeah I relate it with data base.(since I knew they came for Data analyst profile).

He asked me about join, gave me a table and told me to perform all joins. I did that and he asked me about Order by clause and, having clause then asked me normal forms up to bcnf.

Later asked about pl/sql difference b/w sql and pl/sql, what is trigger explain in detail. Some basics questions of DBMS theory asked me about my 2 projects and at the end he gave me a situation where I have a grocery shop outside nit Surathkal, and from last few days/months I realized a downfall in sales, what possible reasons could I find? I gave him 8 reasons within 2/3 mins. He was impressed…

After 1st round out of 31 only 13 were selected and I was there in d list.

Round: TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
Experience: As soon as I entered the room, mam told me “Ooo tum aao aao ”. I smiled because I was the 1st guy during presentation who asked the first question (she made every1 clap for me there) and she remembered my face. And eventually she did study from IIT Kanpur so yes she was able to speak fluent Hindi (plus point for guys like me :p). with her there was a guy he asked me to write code for taking a no and converting it into binary and 1 question from array- very simple later she gave me a table with employee id, order date and order amount. A customer can place max 1 order in 1 day. I had to find the latest transaction of every customer with amount as well. i did it using max function over date and group by with sub query, she asked me about my resume at the end she gave me 7,9,21,63,100 and told me to find the no of numbers between 1 to 50000 which are exactly divisible by all, i did it in 1 min.

but she was smiling, I thought I made some mistake in hurry, then I asked mam m I doing right or wrong (in curiosity as I find very comfortable there) she smiled and said “Chalo bhago ynha se ye interview h ”.I said sorry but yeah she was impressed with my interview so told ki “you will learn all these things very quickly”.

Round: TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
Experience: After 2nd round 9 were selected and I was one of them. It was basically a Managerial round and it scheduled over Skype. I had to introduce myself as well as my family background. Here comes the harder part when he asked me why you have such a poor academic back ground? I was speechless for a moment but I started telling the truth.

I told despite getting 68% marks in my 10th I was the third topper of my class. I got 60.66 % in 12th but yeah there also out of 700 students only 14 got first division. So basically I concluded that in my state board marking is not that much good. He said ok but what happened in graduation(64%) when you studied in Delhi?(what to say now :p) I said sir I did it from IGNOU and you can Google the fact that even less than 5% of student are able to clear the degree in 3 years. Later I explicitly mentioned that I m not blaming my boards but this is the fact which can’t be change.

Now He asked what happened in PG here also you scored only 7.50 CGPA which is less than even standard score of 8(Meri to jaan hi nikal gayi :p). Then I told him that sir u can see my pointer in first semester is very less close to 6.5 but after that I constantly improved myself. He was smiling …..

He asked me about my family background and then I told him how I struggled, I was giving tuition in my grads to continue my education and after grads took a gap of 1 year and cleared all MCA entrance examination and now sitting in front of him.

Later asked about my best qualities….i told him that I can lead group of people very well. I gave example of me being captain of my department cricket team and I was class monitor through 3rd to 12th std and also some stuff regarding my college events. He noted down something .I don’t know what.

I was not sure that I could clear that interview. When the result came they called all 9 students and said that they find is difficult to eliminate 4 names .i was sure that I m out of picture now but fortunately my name was at 2nd position. Wowwwww

Round: HR Interview
Experience: It was telephonic round and just my hobbies and all, he asked me about my poetry writing hobby as well as Hindi Shayaris. I was told to recite 1 …when he listened, he was very impressed…

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: I had no background in finance but still I was selected for Credit Suisse as I had a strong resume

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: There was a Group Discussion on the night before the placement for shortlisted candidates. GD went well as I did not haste into my chance and spoke in a calm manner with well thought out points. Some of us in GD were not letting others to speak. I was careful not to do that and after GD, I was pretty much confident that I would be shortlisted

Round: Puzzle Interview
Experience: My first interview was with an alum who first told me that I had performed very well in my GD and then asked me a puzzle. I had done a similar puzzle before so I was able to answer that. It was followed by some questions on my resume  especially my internship which also I was able to answer well. Then one more puzzle which I had not solved so I took some time to solve it following which he gave me one more puzzle which I had solved instantly

Round: Behavioural Interview
Experience: In the first round itself, I was asked to sell a crumpled piece of paper innovatively as I had been the Marketing Head in Antaragni. I guess I was able to do that really well. I remember I took some time and then came up with an innovative idea that the paper was made up of some special material that could be used to laminate phones if heated to a certain temperature with a machine I was providing with the paper. Also, I told him that the laminated cover would glow into various shades if titled to specific degrees after evening. This amused him and then he told me that I would be called for second round.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My second round was with a senior member in the company who asked me a lot on my resume, stay in campus, post of election officer and some very tricky questions on all of these which I think I did really well as all those were really unexpected. He asked me a question on probability which I remembered I had discussed with my friends just 2 days before. I explained that question quite well and he seemed quite impressed with that. I was followed by some more puzzles and questions on general topics of finance which he had already told me that he had not expected me to answer them as I had no background in finance. Then the HR came in and asked me to meet the VP for the final round of interview.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The third round of interview was carried on by the VP where he asked no more puzzles or questions but it was more of a discussion on all possible fields starting from campus life to politics of UP to recruitment of Sachin and the good performance of Kohli in recent matches. It looked more as if he wanted to know my perspective on various topics. He also asked about my internships and also the reasons why I wanted to join Credit Suisse. He made sure that I was not planning on doing a MBA right away and that I was really interested in joining Credit Suisse. He then told me a lot about the bank sector and as to why I should join Credit Suisse. He then asked me to wait and went to the director. He came back after a while and asked me to interview with the director

Round: HR Interview
Experience: the fourth round was with the Director who began by commenting on how cold Kanpur was that day. Then he told me that he had a sore throat so he wouldn't say much just that they wanted to hire me and did not want me to interview with any other firm.

General Tips: I would suggest you to plan your preparation well in advance and be clear in your mind about the sectors that you are sitting in placements for. Being realistic about the companies that you are targeting is very necessary and then preparing for the placements keeping those companies in mind keeps you really focused. I did not prepare for core companies so cannot really say much about them but as far as the non-core sector is concerned I would suggest that you start working on your resume from summers itself as it does not consume a lot of time and get it review by as many people as you can. Also start preparing quants in the initial week of your semester. For puzzles, if you like solving them, you can really spend time brainstorming them, it does help improve analytical skills. For case studies it is good to practice in groups of 3 with one being the interviewer, one being the interviewee, and the other being the observer. Try to solve as many different cases as possible. For HR questions it is recommended that you write down the important points that you would like to incorporate in your answer and keep that in mind when you are answering questions. Be well prepared on your resume, you should be able to speak about it for at least 1 minute. Also keep in touch with the seniors in the companies that you are targeting.
