When a New Job Feels Like a Step Backward

Started a new job recently, and let’s just say… it’s not what I expected. The work culture? A mess. My boss spends most of her time on the phone gossiping about her family, and my junior who’s been here for 10 years, is not thrilled that I joined as his manager. Turns out, he and my boss are best buddies, which makes things even more complicated. To top it all off, the way they work feels like a time warp. No dashboards, no structure just endless CSV files. Compared to my last company, I feel like I’ve stepped into a cave. Adjusting to a new workplace is always a challenge, but this? This feels like trying to modernize a place that doesn’t want to change. Ever been in a situation like this? How did you deal with it?

Sounds like a tough environment. Have you tried small, gradual improvements instead of big changes? Sometimes resistance is just fear of the unknown.

If the culture is set in its ways, pick your battles. Focus on what you can control and document your impact for future opportunities.

Give it some time. Either they adapt to your expertise, or you gather enough experience to move somewhere that values innovation.

It’s frustrating, but you might be the change they never knew they needed. Small wins can lead to bigger shifts.

Have an honest conversation with your boss about expectations. If things don’t improve, start exploring better options.
